The dragon between them, blood pouring down Will's face, coating his teeth and jaw, his eyes burning with the potential Hannibal has always known was there, potential at last realized, blood and bone and breath, a god's due taken in flesh and fire -- their gazes meet, souls at last twined together as Hannibal has hungered for, and not even Will throwing them both into the ocean could rinse the taste of blood and death from their mouths.

Father left them in the woods; they dropped pebbles and used them to find their way back home.

Father took them out into the woods again but this time, he made sure they had no pebbles. But soft-hearted as he was, he allowed them bread. But birds and ants and everything else snacked on the bread they crumbled, so they couldn't find their way back home - and now they were hungry.

A scent trickled through the air, that of baking sweets, of heating sugar, of cinnamon and nutmeg and licorice and somehow it all smelled amazing, so they followed their noses to the house made of food. Starving, they fell upon it like wolves on sheep, like hawks on rabbits, like children on rare candies - at least until the owner stomped out and caught them with her magic.

But Gretel was clever and Hansel was smart and together, they tricked the witch into the oven. And even over the amazing smells the witch's house had, the smell of cooking flesh was even better and when they opened the oven, they found themselves a feast.

Years and years and years have passed since the day the father took two siblings to the woods, leaving them there to starve but something still lives in the forest, something that will accept offerings of children, something with a house that smells of sweets until suddenly, it smells of roasted meats.
