Hello, everyone. I’m [livejournal.com profile] squidgiepdx and I'll be hosting for the next week. Today's theme is random tags. What does that mean? It means you can use a prompt with any random tag that you want! And if you truly want to be random, check out some randome tags from AO3 and from SquidgeWorld to get you started. Maybe Ray Kowalski inadvertently outs himself when he and Fraser are out to dinner - with glorious consequences. Or maybe the main team on Stargate Atlantis decides to become a foursome. Whatever the case is, go grab a random tag, go forth, and prompt!

Just a few rules:
No more than five prompts in a row.
No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
Use the character's full names and fandom's full name for ease adding to the Lonely Prompts spreadsheet.
No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing, or use the spoiler cut option found here.
If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the above mentioned spoiler cut.

Prompts should be formatted as follows: [Use the character's full names and fandom's full name]
Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt

Some examples to get the ball rolling...
+ Ghosts (BBC), The Captain/Lieutenant Havers, "Schmoop"
+ Stargate Atlantis, Sheppard/McKay/Dex/Teyla, "Polyamory"
+ due South, Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski, "Coming Out"

We are now using AO3 to bookmark filled prompts. If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3 please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2023 collection. See further notes on this new option here.

Not feeling any of today’s prompts? Check out the just created Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet. For more recent prompts to write, you can also use LJ’s advanced search options to limit keyword results to only comments in this community.

While the Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet and LJ's advanced search options are available, bookmarking the links of prompts you like might work better for searching for in the future.

The Captain had been very excited to learn that part of a WWII television programme was being recorded at Button House. He’d also been extremely critical as well, but everyone ignored his comments, the ghosts because they knew what it was like having their own times misrepresented and Alison because she had expected this reaction.

What no-one had expected, least of all the Captain was a genuine truck drawing up and once the driver had disappeared off to speak to the director, looking, the Captain remarked, extremely poorly turned out, was to see Lieutenant Havers stepping out of the truck.

He looked around and, spotting the Captain, waved. The Captain rather self-consciously waved back and then they wandered off together, to a chorus of ‘they’re holding hands’, ‘no, they’re not’, and ‘they are now!’

Teyla loved being a mother.

There was something primal about it, a bond that stretched back countless generations, trying her to every mother who had come before her. It was a tie to her own mother, who had long since gone to be with the Ancestors.

Torren was a good baby. He was healthy, he nursed well, and he engaged happily with all of Teyla’s friends in Athos and in Atlantis. Teyla was proud to call him her son. She wished only that he was a better sleeper.

“My mother used to sing me a lullaby at night to help me sleep,” Laura said, cradling Torren in her arms. She started to sing in a soft voice.

Now it’s time to say good night
Good night, sleep tight
Now the sun turns out his light
Good night, sleep tight
Dream sweet dreams for me
Dream sweet dreams for you

Teyla, exhausted from another sleepless night, drifted off before the end of the first verse. Laura woke her up when Torren started fussing, wanting to nurse. Teyla thanked her for trying.

Laura came back the next night with some lavender lotion.

“Rub it into your hands. Lavender is very relaxing. If Torren smells it on you, it should put him more at ease.”

It did smell very nice, so Teyla dutifully rubbed the lotion into her skin. “You are very kind to try and help,” she said.

“When my cousin had her baby, her husband was deployed. I stayed with her for a few weeks. The lavender really helped.”

When Torren started fussing, Laura scooped him up. “You rest. I’ll sing to him.”

Goodnight my angel, time to close your eyes
And save these questions for another day
I think I know what you’ve been asking me
I think you know what I’ve been trying to say
I promised I would never leave you
Then you should always know
Where you may go, no matter where you are
I never will be far away

Once again, Teyla fell asleep as Laura sang. She felt surprisingly well-rested when she woke up. It was still dark out, but Torren was tucked into his bassinet, still asleep. The lavender had worked.

“I believe you would make a good mother,” Teyla said the next night, when Laura returned. She made them both a pot of what Laura had called chamomile tea. “You have excellent instincts.”

“Thanks. I’ve never really given much thought to having kids, honestly. I’m still to excited to blow things up.”

They shared a grin, and shared the tea, and when Torren started to fuss, Laura rolled out another lullaby.

Come stop your crying
It will be alright
Just take my hand
Hold it tight
I will protect you
From all around you
I will be here
Don’t you cry

For one so small
You seem so strong
My arms will hold you
Keep you safe and warm
This bond between us
Can’t be broken
I will be here don’t you cry

Teyla really liked that one. It felt closest to her own feelings toward her son, and she was able to hang in there for two verses. As she drifted off, she made a mental note to ask Laura to teach her all the words to that particular lullaby.

Both Teyla and Torren slept till morning, and the extra sleep gave her a more optimistic outlook. Perhaps Rodney was correct about circadian rhythms and establishing more regular nighttime rituals, for both herself and Torren. The old ways she had of doing things simply weren’t working in her new life situation.

She was grateful to Laura and pleased to be developing a friendship with her. She spent so much of her time with her team, it was a nice change to have some time with another woman.

To pay her back, Teyla was the one who sang a lullaby when Laura dropped by.

“My mother sang this to me when I was a child.”

We may not be together
For much longer than today
But we are forever joined
Heart to heart, always

History is in your blood
Giving you strength and resolve
To face what may be coming
And help Athos evolve

When Teyla glanced over, Laura was curled up asleep on the bed and Torren was asleep in his bassinette.

Lullabies were a powerful tool indeed.

(I meant to finish this in June! 6^^;; It kinda got away from me... Are they together? Are they friends? Hmmm...)

His work phone to his ear, Leon pulled open a drawer in Dante's desk and stifled a sigh. He lightly rummaged through the mess of papers inside and found what he was looking for: a memo pad. He almost snorted at the life insurance company logo and office information printed at the top. Hunnigan must have heard the amusement in his voice, however, asking Leon if he was paying attention.

Leon jotted down the short strings of letters and numbers Hunnigan gave him. The rest of the information was far easier to remember, but he added a couple of symbols and scribbles to help jog his memory anyway. Then he doodled a bit in a couple of the corners until Hunnigan was finished.

He shook his head as he pocketed his phone. She must've had the day off, too, before it was rudely interrupted with an "urgent" message. Leon had faintly heard music in the background on her end of the line.

Leon ripped the top three pages from the pad and returned it to its place. He was about to close the drawer when something in the haphazard nest of papers caught his eye.

Dante chose that moment to walk back into his main office, a towel around his neck and his shirt half-buttoned, his jeans hanging low on his hips.

"Dante, why did you keep this?" Leon held up a small, wrinkled sheet of paper. It was whole the last time he'd seen it, Leon was pretty sure -- not torn to half of its original size. He showed Dante what was written on the back and then what was printed on the front. "I was drunk when I wrote this."

"That's why I kept it," he replied with an easy shrug and a smile.

"All I wrote was 'no pizza, only tacos plus nachos' and drew a mad face."

"Yes, but it was the way you wrote it. So much emotion and energy, and yet so legible and uniquely stylish." Dante took the paper from Leon. "Sorry for trashing your modern art on the front, but it was only black marker crossing out all the pizza specials and the phone number." Leon remembered that, now that Dante mentioned it. "So very aggressive of you. I liked this cute part more."

"Cute," Leon deadpanned. "You think that's cute."

"Adorable, really. I mean, look at this little emoji face and its angry little eyebrows." Leon tried to snatch back the paper, but Dante sidestepped away from him. "You were the type to doodle in the margins of your notebook at school, right?"

"Who didn't? You say that like it's weird." Judging by Dante's grin, he had spotted the faint reddish hue to Leon's face and ears. "Anyway, there's no reason to keep that. You might as well throw it away, along with half of the other junk in that drawer. Seriously, do you ever clean your desk?"

"If I wrote a note just for you, you'd keep it, too, wouldn't you?"

"Depends on the note." Leon had burned many notes, both written by himself and by other people, although the vast majority had been work-related. Besides actual letters and postcards, he had a few personal notes that he could've thrown out but didn't.

Dante opened a different drawer in his desk. He easily pulled out a sheet of honest-to-gods stationery and a ridiculously-nice-looking fountain pen. For a few moments, Leon was only able to watch the incomprehensible sight in front of him. If that note card was part cotton... Hell, Dante probably had a wax seal set. Leon had clearly chosen the wrong desk drawer earlier.

Then there was the matter of Dante's handwriting. Leon didn't stand close enough to read over his shoulder -- Dante hadn't bothered to sit down, anyway -- but he could tell there were flourishes in Dante's pen strokes. Actual flourishes.

Grandpa eased himself down on the floor in front of the table, and he thanked Mom for the food, signaling the start of the meal.

Hyunwoo picked up his chopsticks and also thanked his mother for the food, and once all his elders had dug in, he took his first bite.

“I hear you got your enlistment papers,” Grandpa said.

Hyunwoo bobbed his head respectfully. “I did.”

“To survive the jungle, make sure you have a good machete, a fire starter, and a way to carry and purify water,” Grandpa said, gesticulating with his chopsticks.

Dad shook his head. “They don’t send the boys out to the jungle like that unless it’s special forces. Hyunwoo-ya, you’re just doing army training, right? Make sure to sure the food your mother sends with you.”

Hyunwoo nodded. He’d heard as much from his sunbaes who’d already done there service. He was also hoarding photocards from his sister groups to use for bartering. He wanted to get some of them signed for premium trading.

Dad continued, “Once you get out of basic, make sure to clean. If you have no other duties, clean something. You better be cleaning something whenever your sergeant sees you.”

Hyunwoo cleared his throat. “Ah, after basic, I’ll be a public service worker.”

Dad paused. “Oh?”

“Well, with the times I dislocated my shoulder when I was doing competitive swimming, and the times I had a detached retina, and the time I injured my back dancing, I didn’t do well on the physical assessment,” Hyunwoo said.

Dad blinked. “I see. That makes sense. Where will you be serving, do you know?”

“At a government daycare facility,” Hyunwoo said.

Mom smiled. “Ah, yes. I was a kindergarten teacher once. Let me teach you what you need to know to survive taking care of toddlers.”

Hyunwoo leaned in and listened and did his best to memorize it all.

“Now, don’t be a pushover,” Mom began, and Dad nodded his agreement.
“But let the kids make age-appropriate choices for themselves.”

Hyunwoo nodded.

“And most of all — it’s okay if they cry a little bit. It won’t hurt them. But it might hurt your ears. You’ll get used to it eventually though. And always use a second diaper as a shield when you change a boy’s diaper. He could accidentally pee on you.”

Dad nodded wisely. “Boys get better range than girls, for obvious reasons.”

Mom giggled. “You peed on Grandpa once when he was kind and changed your diaper for me.”

Grandpa grumbled. “I thought we were never going to mention that again.”

Mom giggled behind her hand. “Sorry, father-in-law.” She turned back to Hyunwoo. “Also, remember that those kids aren’t going hungry. If they refuse to eat their veggies or fruit, just wait. If they get hungry enough, they will.”

Mom, Dad, and Grandpa fell to squabbling about how best to discipline children.

Hyunwoo listened to them and realized that even though he didn’t get to see them often, he would miss them fiercely. But he would serve his country, and he would see them again, and everything would be all right.

“Watson, once more you see but you fail to observe,” Holmes replied. “He and Sir Arthur are brothers; therefore, it is by no means inconceivable that they both possess cufflinks bearing the family insignia, and as they are close in age it is quite likely both sets were made at the same time. We know Sir Arthur was elsewhere at the time of the robbery, so he could not be the guilty party. In addition, the cufflinks which he was wearing were not of the most suitable for the occasion and from the glances his wife gave him when he fiddled with them, we can conclude he only discovered one, or both, were missing when he came to dress. So his brother must have taken them.”

They didn’t have a disagreement, did they?” Malcolm sounded worried, the two hadn’t been going out together for very long, and he didn’t want to think that their first weekend away had been a disaster. In addition, if there were bad vibes between the two it would affect the rest of the team.

Ros laughed. “Only in the ‘anything you can do I can do better’ way. Apparently they began by seeing whose sandcastle resisted the oncoming tide the best, which was abandoned when Adam realised that it wouldn’t be a good idea for Lucas to stay until the castles were both completely submerged. Then they tried walking along the groynes until Adam fell off and gave himself a black eye. And finally they decided to ignore the steps up from the beach and scramble up the side and Lucas slipped and grazed his arm. Or some variation of events, I don’t quite remember. But I gather they had an excellent weekend!”

“I’m very impressed that you spotted the way messages were being left by the patisserie display,” the Minister told Harry Pearce. “How on earth did your operative spot it?”

“He has a very keen eye for detail,” Harry replied. What he didn’t add was that Lucas had been fascinated with the regular change of cakes in the window and had entertained himself by noting down the variations he’d spotted during a team meeting. No-one would have known about his lack of attention if he hadn’t suddenly exclaimed, ‘I’ve got it!’

After which, it had been a simple matter to remove the patisserie staff as a temporary measure and leave a false message, leading to the apprehension of two foreign agents Section D had been after for some time. And to Lucas’ great satisfaction he’d been permitted to take home the cakes he’d used to give the message.

Any, any, “burning bridges”
From: [identity profile] brumeier.livejournal.com
Laura sat on the steps in the Gate room, arms wrapped around her knees. It was quiet now, all the activity from earlier over and done with. Even Chuck had gone, and he was rarely away from his post.

There was no going back.

“Is this stair taken?”

Laura tipped her head up. “Plenty of room.”

Carson sat beside her, and she immediately leaned into him and rested her head on his shoulder. He put an arm around her, and they sat there in companionable silence for a little while.

Rodney had called him Not Carson for a while, until Laura suggested he was being insensitive and offered to help set him straight with a well-placed foot up his ass. He wasn’t the original Carson, but he was still Carson. Finding him had been like a sign from the universe, the push a grief-stricken Laura needed to finally make her move.

“Regrets?” Carson asked softly.

For a second, she thought he was talking about their relationship.

“No. It’s just… so final. You know? We really burned that bridge. Right down to ashes.”

“Aye. It’s like the first year again.”

Laura hadn’t been on the original Atlantis expedition; she arrived on the Daedalus, reinforcements during the Wraith siege. But she could imagine now how it must have felt for Carson. He’d left his family behind, his career, and everything he’d known for a slim chance, an Ancient legend.

They were more prepared this time around, but the future was just as unknown now as it had been then.

“Do you have regrets?” Laura asked.

Carson’s arm tightened around her. “No. I couldna go back even if I wanted to. It’s different for me.”

He was right, of course. First Carson had died, and his remains had been sent back to Earth. His family had buried him, and mourned him, and moved on with their lives. There was no way his clone could’ve stepped in, not with the Stargate program still classified. Atlantis was his home now.

Her home, too. And yeah, there was a little regret for her. She wished she could’ve told her parents more, explained why she had to go away and never come home. They wouldn’t accept her letter at face value. They’d search for her, and she hated having to cause them that kind of pain.

“The City changes you, doesn’t it?” Laura kept staring at the Gate. “It’s a responsibility that covers two galaxies. I don’t know how anyone just walks away.”

But a lot of them had. Colonel Sheppard and Rodney had made careful, discrete inquiries, and made sure Atlantis was only populated by those who needed to be there, who felt the same pull and sense of responsibility that Laura did.

The few. The proud. The Lanteans. Laura bit back a laugh.

The Gate was closed to Earth now. The address had been blocked and buried under layers of encryption. There would be no more trips back to the Mountain. No more data bursts. No more news from back home. The ships could still make the trip, of course, but they’d never find one city with a whole galaxy to hide in. Not with all the precautions Rodney had taken.

It was treason, what they’d done. Some might say it was an act of war.

“I’m glad you didn’t walk away, lass, despite what you’ve lost. And I feel bad saying so, but it’s true.”

Laura uncurled and shifted so she could catch Carson with a kiss.

“I’ve gained a hell of a lot, too.”

Later they’d join the others in the Mess, where they were celebrating their return to Pegasus. A moment of joy before the realities set in, and life went on like it always had – a life of discovery and survival and pain and happiness. The only difference was there wouldn’t be any backup this time. No reinforcements from Earth to swoop in and save the day.

Colonel Sheppard said they were going to do things differently this time. They’d work harder to make allies, open Atlantis to them. Build their ranks with the people they’d come back to save.

It was exciting and terrifying, all at once.

Laura sat on the steps with Carson, thinking of all the things the new expedition had given up, and all the things they hoped to gain.

Some bridges needed to be burned.
