Please remember the rules. No more than five prompts in a row, no more than three per fandom. Come on back and prompt more once yours have been answered. No spoilers in the prompts, and if your story has spoilers, please warn and leave at least three spaces before starting the story.
For the sake of Our Code Monkeys, please leave your prompt properly. For example:
DCU/Marvel, Pre-Crisis Jason Todd, Lian Harper, Young Avengers, "This isn't my home."
DCU, Jason Todd/Tim Drake, Jason comes back to his own Earth late after being abandoned during his trip around the multiverse and find that he's the stranger on his own Earth now
DCU, Owen Mercer/Kara Zor-El, he comes out of hiding during Blackest Night to find everyone thinks he's evil and dead, and he hates how Kara looks at him like a stranger now...
If nothing ends up being your thing today, there's always lots of Lonely Prompts that could use some loving. <3
Have fun!

Date: 2010-04-29 02:26 pm (UTC)It's been three months. Three months of pretending that they can live normal lives, of pretending that they want to live normal lives. Three months of faking resumes and sleeping on the floor of their rented apartment because every time they go to a furniture store they're both paralyzed with indecision. Three months of refreshing every meteorology site, reading every newspaper, and searching for anything to break up the monochrome of normal.
They hit the road again. In the next state over there's a kidnapped girl they think they can track.
They're wrong, and it ends up on the evening news. Dean can't bring himself to watch it, turns the tv off and goes back to cleaning the gun that's too cold, too lifeless, in his hands.
*
"Look at this," Sam says and tries to keep the excitement out of his voice.
It's a scrappy piece of paper he hold out to his brother, soft and creased from being folded over and over in tense anticipation as Sam jogged home from the library. But even though the paper is crumpled, the words are clear and the most beautiful things Sam has ever read. Body found. Heart missing. It might be nothing, it might be salvation. Dean's face, too, lights up when he reads it, a spark in his eyes that hasn't been there for months.
They drive all night, and the unfamiliar little town they reach in the morning is more like home than any apartment ever could be. The body in the morgue looks like an old friend, interviewing witnesses feels like a highschool reunion. There's something in the back of Sam's mind that says this probably isn't healthy, but when they chase the werewolf out through a parking lot and into the night, when the blood pumps hot and frantic through his body and his brain is soaked in adrenaline, he doesn't care.
Sam meets Dean's eyes over the body of the creature and it's like coming back to life. They both smile and laugh when they head back to the car. And they're both in such high spirits that they don't look back in time to see the body of the werewolf shimmer and vanish.
*
"They bought it," Gabriel says and doesn't bother to hide the smugness in his voice.
Casiel still isn't entirely sure that this deception is the best thing for Sam and Dean, but the smiles on their faces as they pile into their car erase most of his doubts. It's like Dean told him, when he'd held Castiel through the tremors of alcohol withdrawal, rough hands tracing soothing patterns along his spine: you can't stop shit all at once, you need to ease off it gradually. The Winchesters have been hunting dark creatures all their lives, to stop so suddenly only intensifies the sense of what they have lost. (Even if what they think they have lost isn't entirely gone. The rules of Divine Witness Protection are strict - contact with humans isn't really allowed - but maybe one day...) One day Sam and Dean will learn to settle down, to live their lives in the light.
For now, they have Castiel and his brother.
Maybe next time Gabriel will let him be the monster instead of the victim. He rather thinks he'd like to try slamming Dean up against a wall.

*snerk* Oh Cas!
Yeah, I figure the boys trying to adjust to a normal life would be the hardest thing ever. Thank goodness for Gabe and Cas easing the blow a little.
