Fill: (1/2) Grove of Fog, Dean/Castiel
Date: 2010-09-15 12:11 am (UTC)Castiel sits in on garrison meetings to supervise the implementation of his latest reforms, but his mind wanders to from the conceptual to the tangible, to earth. He visits the blacksmiths forging swords for the newest angel classes, the clang of metal on metal rhythmic, like a heartbeat. He relieves the scribes cataloging the stream of incoming human prayers. Above the silence, it is their words that he hears, that speak to him. That ask for an angel to watch over them.
Castiel owes his being to God and he has a duty to Heaven. He reminds himself of this as human fears and dreams pour into Heaven, hanging about like a fog of emotion and dulling the clarity of Castiel’s purpose. Life on earth continues, it’s what Castiel gave up Heaven for in the first place. Now back in Heaven, Castiel reminds himself of what he gave up to return, what he gave up for hope and faith in God. Castiel doesn’t make sacrifices in vain.
So Castiel waits for God. So Castiel listens to the prayers from earth. And he waits.
All Castiel hears is silence.
Joshua finds him in the Garden amid a grove of giant redwoods. A tourist attraction on earth, the large tree Castiel stands beneath has existed there for hundreds of years, would for hundreds more. Castiel remembers this tree more vividly than the others, than the taller ones and the older ones, how its ugly roots gnarl together at its base creating a dark alcove deep enough for two people to stand. He stares up at its perfectly replicated branches swaying even absent a real wind.
“He needs you, Castiel,” Joshua says.
“And I am here to serve him.”
Joshua hums, not giving anything away. Castiel wonders if God still speaks to Joshua or if, like the tree branches, Joshua answers to a voice that isn’t really there.
“You think Heaven needs you?”
Still squinting, Castiel turns to look at Joshua for the first time. He’s younger, his eyes are sharper. “He brought me back for a reason.”
“To learn,” Joshua says. “To win.”
“I did.”
Joshua nods, cranes his neck up at ruddy bark reaching into the sky. “God needed you, Castiel. Heaven might still. But you should figure out who needs you the most and answer only to them.”
Joshua disappears. Castiel’s eyes settle on the base of the tree, looking for the first time into the dark abyss of the notch and all of the memories it holds. The Garden darkens, a pall of haze moving into the canopy of the grove.
