Fill: (2/2) Grove of Fog, Dean/Castiel
Date: 2010-09-15 12:12 am (UTC)Castiel joins the scribes, lets the doubts and prayers of strangers envelop him.
“It’s my fault,” one says. “Forgive me, please.”
“I just feel so alone without him, I just want to know he’s okay, he’s up there, and he’s okay,” pleads another.
“I’ve done everything to be a good person, everything the Bible says, but for what?” a woman asks.
“Don’t take him, please. I will do anything. Anything. Just, please. Not my son.”
Humans need each other, Castiel knows. Even in Heaven, they’re drawn to each other, to their soulmates. They’re willing to sacrifice themselves for the ones they love. They’re not like angels. They’re not like Castiel. He is not like them. He belongs in Heaven. God needs him. Or needed him. No one else needs Castiel.
“Protect my brother, protect my dad, protect my sister in Afghanistan, protect her friends,” a child prays. “Send angels to watch over them.”
Something in Castiel breaks. The fog that clouded his judgment dissipates. Castiel can see clearly.
It is against regulations, but Castiel dispatches two additional angels to Afghanistan immediately. The ones protecting civilians are overworked and need back-up is what he will tell Raphael and Metatron when they question him.
Castiel has waited long enough. He is too human, has sacrificed too much to stay in Heaven. He will risk the wrath of the archangels, of God even, to be with the one who needs him. They’ve both waited long enough.
Dean, hard-hat in hand, stops in his tracks when he spots Castiel standing sentinel next to his pick-up truck. His opens his mouth, jaw bobbing for words, but comes up with none. Castiel smiles, still a small gesture. Dean drops his hard-hat so he can punch the fucker. He gets as far as a clenched fist.
“Thought you were too busy being Heaven’s butt-boy to visit,” Dean says. He bends over to pick up the hat, glaring as he does so. He might never stop glaring.
“I’m done with that.”
“Didn’t think you could just turn in your resignation.” Dean steps around Castiel to throw his equipment into the truck bed. Castiel turns to watch. “Won’t your boss be angry? Losing his most loyal soldier and all that?” Castiel’s gaze falls lower than Dean’s eyes and Dean has an idea why women complain about that shit. He’s not some angelic booty call, damn it.
“A risk I will take. I’ve fought divine retribution before.” Castiel looks down at the ground. Dean steps closer and when Castiel looks back up, he’s only inches away. “I’m not theirs anymore, Dean. I’m yours.”

This is beautiful. And really damn awesome. If you're worried about whether or not you can still write Dean/Castiel, stop. You can still write them brilliantly.
♥ Thank you. ♥
