About six months after Miranda the current job involved an afternoon high class society party with platters of fruit, little sandwiches, and instructions to wear a blue hankercheif in the chest coat pocket and yellow sash. Decoration instructions so their unknown contact could find them. Dragging Simon along for instruction and moral support Mal concentrated on not fidgeting as he watched Simon weave between old flirting ladies keeping his full plate balanced.

"I hear that if I want to find something the man who returned Bridget is who I need to find."

Mal turned to face the woman standing next to him, her voice barely loud enough to hear.

"What would a fine lady as your self be looking for?" Mal asked seeing the stern man standing behind her.

"Our children. Simon and River." The names of two people said in the same tone of I've lost my hat, oh well, I’ll have to get a new one.

"Simon and River Tam. I seem to remember seeing their names broadcasted all across the cortex." Mal surprised the couple with his knowledge of their last name.

Simon stood behind them watching Mal and listening to his parents.

"I heard the girl was in trouble and asked for your help and when the boy tried to help her you cast him out. Why should they return to you two?" Mal asked glad these were the people hiring him to find Simon and River and not someone working for the Alliance. The Tam's turned their back on family and Mal felt like he had run out on Simon and River and needed to atone for that mistake until they both knew they were Mal's family. River was easy, when the decision was made to go to Miranda River's powerful brain knew how Mal felt for them. Maybe this could be a chance to let Simon know.

"We are their parents. Their family and home. They can return to their lives." Mr. Tam stated slowly as speaking to a slow witted simpleton.

"They have a home and family as long as they want, as long as my ship keeps flying, longer if we don't crash." Looking at Simon Mal hoped he understood the apology and request to stay.

"River hasn't rubbed soup into her hair for a while; I think we'll be alright even if she has taken to talking with Wash's dinosaurs."

Hearing a familiar voice Mr. and Mrs. Tam turned to the smiling man behind them. "Simon! Son!"

"Hello Mother, Father."

"Look! It's Simon. I'm pretty good at this finding people." Mal said waving his hand toward Simon calmly holding his plate of food.

"Simon get your sister and we can leave for home." Mr. Tam commanded.

"Heading home does sound good." Simon said looking at his parents.

Watching the Tam's faces light up Mal fought to ignore the pain, his family was going to be split apart. Simon and River would leave. It took a while but they had found a fit on Serenity and they would be leaving a hole behind. This is their choice. Be happy for them. Next time we have a job on a core world they could stop in and say hello.

Something in Simon relaxed, his parents wanting to bring home their famous children and Mal calling them family. There really was no decision and River knew it as she had said to Simon earlier, "I'll see you when you come home Simon."

"Mal, you ready to go? Do you think we could fill our pockets and take everyone back some of the real food or do you want to leave before someone starts a duel?" Simon asked looking at his father and Mal.

"You start a duel once and they never let you forget. Something other than protein powder would mighty tasty." Relieved Mal grinned happy they were staying and they felt comfortable enough to tease him like the others did.

"Mother, Father, River and I will give you a wave so we can visit." Simon said noding to each of them as Mal headed to the table of real dirtside grown fruits.
