Whedonverse, any, "Redemption? No, I was totally faking that redemption to get in your pants."

It takes him longer to catch on than he’s proud of. Longer still to admit to the others that he may have made a mistake. He’s known, from the moment he suspected, what they will think. That he knew all along. That he’s been covering things up. That he didn’t know because he didn’t want to. He had to steel himself for that. He’s been bearing Angel’s sad, wounded eyes since the beginning; he couldn’t bear their censure until he was absolutely sure.

Somehow, Spike learns that the truth is out and his reaction is-

Well. It’s probably exactly what Wesley should have expected, only love is blind and all of that, if you can call what they had - even before he knew - love.

Spike’s brought his night’s kill to Wesley‘s home. The ruins of a young girl lie, messy, in Wesley’s bed. The way the body is arranged… There’s no doubt what Spike was doing with her when she died.

Spike’s teeth are bloody when he kisses Wesley, as soon as Wesley’s stepped far enough into the apartment to see Spike‘s work, the scent of blood pungent in the air. Wesley freezes, back to the wall where Spike‘s pushed him, as if he could do anything else with Spike’s strong hands holding him still, Spike’s body pinning his in place.

If Wesley was even more wrong than he just realized, he’s going to die tonight. There are probably many things he could say, ask (he will not plead and to threaten Spike, mortal versus vampire, would only win him a laugh).

Wesley asks, “Why?”

Spike grins as though it’s the funniest thing he’s ever heard, and looks at Wesley as though it’s the most pitiful. “Oh, pet. Because it’s what I do. Somehow you forgot that. It’s a bit of a shame, really, that the gig is up. I’ll almost miss playing the white hat for someone.”

Things move inside of Wesley - emotions battling it out: shame that he ever fell for one of Spike’s ruses; embarrassment that he enjoyed the fall; remorse, that it hadn’t - any of it - been real, and a little pang that perhaps, in some world, it could have been.

“I mean…” Wesley continues, as Spike licks long, slow (suggestive) stripes up Wesley’s neck. “W- Why the game, Spike? Why pretend at all?”

“Because I didn’t just want a quick shag out of you, Percy. I wanted the whole deal. Everything Angel’s ever wanted but never had the bollocks to take.”

Wesley’s heart thumps in his chest.

If he’s not mistaken, Spike’s smile is a bit wistful. Almost sorry, as he says. “You know, you two are just too obvious. I knew all I had to do to win you was take a page out of Peaches’ playbook - be the big, broody hero on his path to redemption.” Spike scoffs. “Redemption. I was only faking all of it to get into your pants.”

Near certainty that death is coming sometimes lends a serenity, Wesley’s found, that you wouldn’t expect from a man who doesn’t necessarily wish to die.

He manages to smile in the face of Spike’s bared fangs. To revel, just a little, in the confusion and surprise he sees in Spike’s gold eyes. To ignore the hollow ache spreading inside him for the moment.

“Maybe that’s not the part you’ve been faking, Spike… Have you thought of that?”

Wesley has no hope that his speculation is true. It’s too soon (and with a body lying just a room away) to view it as anything but more wishful thinking, but if he’s going to die - and die a fool - he might as well get the nagging thought off his mind before he does.

Spike is- He honestly looks flummoxed for a minute. It’s a wonder.

Then he recovers his smirk. “Whatever you have to tell yourself, mate. I’ll miss that clever mouth of yours, in any case, and I’m not talking ’bout for talking. Maybe I’ll stop back in sometime and we’ll reminisce, yeah?” And then he’s gone.

Wesley dials the Hyperion as soon as he can move, but he can’t quite recover his breath to speak.

OOH! HOT. And I love Wesley's conflicted emotions and the way he fucks with Spike's head - i love ALL of it. This is fabulous - thank you!
