Thursday - Heart
Jun. 23rd, 2011 12:03 amI’m
jaune_chat and it’s been great hosting you this week. I hope you have a thoughtful Thursday!
Today the theme will be Heart. Having a heart, not having a heart, broken heart, owner of a lonely heart, open heart surgery, heart of ice, heart of the matter, and whatever else you can think of to fit the theme!
As always, please follow the rules:
• No more than one prompt per post, three prompts per fandom, and no more than five total. If one of your prompts is filled, you may post another.
• No spoilers in the prompts for new shows/seasons until at least one week after airing.
• If your fill contains spoilers, please label it clearly with the fandom/show and leave enough space for people to pass by.
• Feel free to fill a prompt even if it is already filled, the more fic the merrier!
Be kind to our codemonkeys and format your prompt properly:
• Heroes, Hiro + any, he always had the biggest heart
• Criminal Minds, Penelope Garcia/Kevin Lynch, their electronic hearts kept perfect time.
• Sherlock (BBC)/Firefly, Sherlock + or / John, and Serenity’s crew, Mal had no idea his latest cargo was smuggling one man’s heart across the ‘verse. This was déjà vu all over again.
If nothing today trips your trigger, go check out our Lonely Prompts for inspiration!

---
Watson's quiet, keeps to himself, and saves Mal's life dockside, halfway to their destination.
"You're a gorram doctor?" Mal demands, while Watson shoves his shirt into the wound, grabs Mal's gun, and shoots the dirty bastards who ambushed them.
"Stay still, Captain," Watson tells him, barely looking up and still getting the ringleader between the eyes.
Zoe and Jayne show up then and Watson barks out orders, but Mal decides it's a nice time to black out.
0o0
Watson is a model passenger. The Tams could learn from him. Simon asks him questions over supper, and Watson answers civilly, drawing more from Simon than Mal thinks he realizes.
Jayne asks about the shooting. That, Watson neatly avoids, and Jayne ends up talking for ten minutes about his childhood home. By the time he catches on, supper is over and Watson thanks them all for the food, departing silently.
River watches him go. "What is it?" Simon asks, Kaylee leaning forward, all of them waiting.
River smiles and says, "His heart's big enough for everyone, and he'll keep it safe 'til they're together and two become one again."
Mal looks at Zoe, then back to River. "So, he's not a threat, then?"
Pushing back from the table, River shakes her head. "Not to us," she says, rising to her feet and spinning in place. "Not ever, unless we hurt his heart."
She stops suddenly, glancing around covertly before whispering, "Wanna hear a secret?"
"Yeah," Kaylee murmurs, leaning in.
River looks around one more time before telling them, "His heart couldn't be burnt, because it was never his alone."
Mal has no idea what that means. Going by their expressions, no one knows. Not that that's close to bein' new.
River dances her way out of the room. Mal shakes his head and leans back in his chair.
"At least we got another doc," Jayne says. "One that can even shoot."
Simon gives him a polite glare and sternly rises to his feet, following his sister. Kaylee’s at his heels, taking his hand and murmuring something.
"What do you think?" Mal asks Zoe.
She thinks for a moment, rubbing a hand gently across her swelling belly. "I want to trust him," she finally says, slowly, like it's a confession. "And I believe River might have the right of it." She meets Mal's eyes. "He is a dangerous man, but not to us. At least, not at the moment."
"Yeah," Mal says. "That's what I think, too."
Hopefully, nothing else will go wrong before they reach Watson's destination.
(Knowing their luck, not gorram likely.)

Date: 2011-06-23 05:10 am (UTC)Dean/Castiel, PG-13, 'Feelings'
Date: 2011-06-24 03:14 am (UTC)Castiel tries not to read Dean's mind too much, but sometimes Dean thinks so loudly that Castiel cannot help but hear.
The image of Anael, human and Graceless, her eyes big and solemn and her hair shining in the light had flitted across Dean's mind as he had met Castiel's eyes, vivid and accompanied by a flicker of sound.
I mean it. Every emotion, Dean, even the bad ones... It's why I fell. It's why... Why I'd give anything not to have to go back. Anything.
...how's that possible? You guys are powerful and perfect. You don't doubt yourselves or God or anything.
Perfect... Like a marble statue. Cold... No choice... Only obedience.
The flash of memory was gone almost as quickly as it had appeared, and Dean glanced away, still talking.
Powerful, emotionless, unthinkingly obedient - that is the picture that Anael painted for Dean.
It is also a lie.
Castiel has always experienced emotion, satisfaction, irritation, determination, the occasional doubt, attachment, loyalty, but since he has come to Earth - since he has met Dean - his emotional range has broadened exponentially.
Dean is steadfast and infuriatingly stubborn and disrespectful, caring and intelligent and many, many other things that are inextricably tangled with Castiel's emotions. Castiel has a list in his head, Things that are Dean, and it never stops growing.
Every time Castiel sees Dean's green eyes glow with an amused smile, or his eyebrows draw together in annoyance, listens to Dean working on a case or sees him righteously vanquishing the things that he hunts, Castiel's heart... flips.
It is a discomforting sensation, inexplicable and strange, and it is just as likely to happen when Dean is bickering with his brother as when he is facing down angels over the fate of the world.
Sometimes, when Dean is angry and upset, all that Castiel wants is to soothe his distress and hold him close and safe, until the desire to do so is almost overwhelming.
It takes an effort to fight it off, and Castiel finds refuge in impatience and irritability - most of it genuine, because Dean is needlessly stubborn and deliberately antagonistic, and as all humans is annoyingly slow. He is preoccupied with trivialities, to the point where Castiel sometimes almost wishes to smite him for it.
But at the same time Castiel would not wish for Dean to lose these characteristics, because perplexingly, Castiel is as fond of them as he is infuriated.
Castiel has found his existence taken over by feelings, huge and human and complicated, and there is nothing that he can do about them. He has given up everything that has had meaning to him, all for Dean, and yet somehow, it is worth it.
It is frightening and wonderful and terrible, and Castiel does not know what to do with it.
"Anna was not entirely truthful," Castiel tells Dean, finally.
Dean glances sideways.
"Yeah?"
Castiel gazes into the distance.
"Angels are as capable of feeling as humans," he says. "It is merely that angels experience them differently, and that sentimentality is discouraged by Heaven."
Dean is silent for a moment, before he gently claps a hand on Castiel's shoulder.
"Yeah. I know, Cas."
Castiel hopes that he truly does.

Date: 2011-06-24 01:09 am (UTC)***************
Dean's on the porch area near the front door of the bar when he sees Balthazar finishing a cigarette at front of the nearby alleyway.
He feels like punching something (preferably Balthazar himself) just at the sight of him.
Cas is still fucking hurting , and there he is out and about like it didn't matter.
Well, obviously it didn't matter to Balthazar. Cas had never mattered to him.
Dean's fighting every instinct to just go over there and start something with the guy for principle's sake when Balthazar catches his eyes as he looks up from putting out the cigarette.
Dean's fists clench as he calls out Dean's name and walks up to him. "Cas isn't answering my calls. Look, I know he doesn't want to talk to me -"
Dean rolls his eyes and tries to contain his anger as he cuts him off. "Gee, I wonder why? That's usually what not answering a call means, Sherlock, and if I were you, I'd take the hint."
"I just feel bad about leaving things like this. I never intended to hurt him. Could you just tell him that?"
"I'm not telling Cas jack shit from you. You feel bad? Boo - hoo. Too bad. You're the one who cheated; you're the one who broke his heart. Live with it. If you honestly think I'd give you any chance to get him back and just hurt him again, then you are really stupider than you look."
"I don't want to get him back. Like I said, I'd just rather not leave things this way."
Dean only shrugs. "Like I said, live with it. Somehow I don't think you'll have a problem with that. You know what? Not only should you stop calling him, you should stop showing your face around here."
"It's a public place, and I do live nearby. What are you going to do? Make me?"
Dean's finally had it with the attitude and before he really knows what he's doing, he shoves Balthazar hard against the wall. "Consider this an unfriendly suggestion. You and your latest fling - find someplace else to drink."
"I suggest that you let go of me unless you're looking to get your ass kicked. Okay, I get it. You don't like me."
"I don't like people who hurt my friends," Dean practically growls.
"You never liked me from the beginning, and now I think I know why. You've got a thing for Cas, have you? Suppose you're going to be there to pick up the pieces now? How sweet. Now let go unless you really do want a fight."
Dean knows enough about the guy to realize it would probably end in a draw despite outward appearances. He has to admit while a fight would be satisfying, it would really prove nothing, and lets Balthazar go. "You're not worth getting arrested," he says and then goes through the door without looking back.
A beer later, he finally also has to admit that the bastard was right about one thing.
When Cas is ready to move on, he wants it to be with him.

Date: 2011-06-23 08:24 am (UTC)Bunk beds can get cramped with two people on one level. Neither really minds, though, and though there's the usual minor adjustments to be made ("Ouch, Amy, your elbow--!" "Move your cold feet and I'll move my elbow!") it's really rather nice, spending a few hours not sleeping or running or trying to stop aliens from taking over Leadworth.
The best part, though, has to be the hearts. Before, Rory thought nothing could beat the feeling of Amy's pulse under his fingers, reminding him that she's very much here and very much alive (because even though he doesn't remember the two thousand years he spent without her unless he wants to, they're always there, lingering). But now, with double the heart and double the life, it's like a lifeline, tethering him to her, like he's a balloon and the sky is a minefield of needles.
(At least he knows now where the Doctor comes up with all those weird analogies. It must be a Time Lord thing.)

Date: 2011-06-24 12:44 am (UTC)She knows it's crazy. Knows it probably couldn't actually happen, that she'd be buffeted around and probably break a wing and fall and fall--
That's why it's a dream. That’s why she pulls insane stunts and barrels her way through and laughs in the middle of battle, roaring as a bear or shrieking as a bird, giving herself fully to the bloodlust of a warrior who knows victory at any price.
She’s not fighting for morals or honor, or in anger and hatred. She’s not Cassie’s reluctant soldier or Jake’s weary general. She’s a warrior finally given focus, given a war.
Rachel’s fighting for her planet’s freedom, and it’s a storm inside her, wind and water lashing together into something beyond anyone’s understanding, and she can only unleash it when she’s out of her weak girl-shape, and she’s an eagle, high in the sky, dreaming about a hurricane to ride.

Somehow in medical school, they forgot to teach the students just how amazing the human heart can be.

Date: 2011-06-23 07:32 am (UTC)He fights to harden his hearts to their voices, and the hundreds, thousands... countless others joining them. He rushes on - one more clue to find. One more part of the puzzle.
Amy falls silent behind him and his hard hearts fracture just a little. He rushes on.
The end of the world comes. Time resets. He doesn't have it yet, still just out of his grasp.
Rory turns and grabs at his arm, "Doctor, don't, please..." but he pulls away and doesn't even spare Amy a glance as she starts to scream like the end of the world is coming. It is. She's right to scream.
He turns away and doesn't listen to them scream. Rushes on. One more clue, he's so close. If he can only...
Amy falls silent behind him and he's so close but distracted. It's at his fingertips. He nearly has it. He reinforces his stone hearts and reaches for that last clue...
The end of the world comes, time resets. He doesn't know how long this can go on.
Rory turns and grabs at his arm, "Doctor, don't, please..." but he's already moved away and doesn't even spare Amy a glance as she starts to scream like the end of the world is coming. It is. She's right to scream.
His hearts are cold and stone now. He hears them scream and finds that last clue. Amy falls quiet and he barely notices. He has it in his hands.
The end of the world comes, time resets.
There's a moment... just a moment... when he hesitates. His cold heart doesn't remember this part. Reaching out to meet Rory's hands, pulling Amy close, these actions feel alien.
Then he's there again, hearts creaking with their melting, and he whispers, "Don't worry. I'm going to get us out of this." Pulls them both towards the TARDIS.
The end of the world doesn't come. His aged hearts ache. Amy smiles.
