 It's arnica again, wondering why LJ ate the first version of this and then ignoring it to let you know it's Lyrics day! I love Lyrics day. Nothing tickles my fancy quite as much as seeing what songs make you think of what characters. 

As always, please follow the rules:

They were right. He did abandon his companions when they became too old. He leads them into life or death situations but he can't face them when they die.

He knows he's a coward, always taking the coward's way out, but he han't realized how much it would hurt when he took that first human with him on the trip of a lifetime.

Watching her grow old, slowed down by time until he went to wake her one morning and she was simply gone, he life slipping out silently as a cat.

He tries over and over again to find a friend who won't leave him in such pain but they always leave, some on their own two feet but others...

Each loss hurts, feeling like nothing could be more painful.

Then his planet dies and he tells himself "No more."

No more child-like over-evolved monkeys. No more companions.

He wraps his heart in coldness to keep the chill of loneliness away and moves on to save the universe.

Then he meets a human that chips awway at his armor, one who isn't even that special but she stays calm-ish in a crises and she makes him smile for real.

So he breaks his promise to himself and breaks his hearts in the process.

When she leaves him, he tries to gather himself in again but he can't.

And they make him glad of it even as they break him even more. All his brilliant mad little human companions who love him enough to let him go, even when he doesn't love them enough to want to let go.

Amy and Rory don't know what they've given him.

They don't understand the joy and despair of finding the one thing you thought you'd lost forever.

She is the perfect companion and he can let himself love her; because he's already lost her once. And she's always come back to him.




A.N.: ok, this was supposed to end sadly but it got away from me... and about the first companion: I always assumed the Doctor had human companions before Barbara and Ian. She is THE first.

It's weird to see Erik so peaceful.

To have him sitting there with a benevolent smile on his face and flowers in his hair.

The weirdest part is that everyone is smiling back, as though he's just another hippy swaying along to the music instead of the broken, angry man who's usually only this peacefull when they're laying together at night, Charles's fingers running through his hair.

"Charles." Erik says, leaning close and laying his head on Charles's shoulder. "just today, lets pretend everything's ok."

He sounds so tired that Charles can't help sighing. He's worried for his friend but for now he can pretend they aren't quite a bit more than two young men who may be closer than is entirely proper.
