Hey guys! havenward here, sliding in for another pinch hit theme. Our scheduled guest host for this week is unfortunately sick, so everyone keep them in your thoughts! Today's theme will be Switching Roles. This could mean that the new guy is now the boss while the boss is now the new guy, the mastermind is now the hitter and the hitter is the grifter, or something a little more off the walls, like the psychic is now the one with super strength and the guy with super strength is now the psychic. It can always have been that way, or change for whatever awesome, cracky, or angsty reason you can come up with!

Word on the street is Captain Zoe Alleyne of Serenity is a solid, dependable thief. She’s honest when the job doesn’t require elsewise, levelheaded in conflict, and a natural leader. Someone you can trust your cargo and your reputation with. Close-mouthed, not prone to much speech at all much less talk of things better kept secret. She has a husband that flies, and a neater pilot you’ve never seen – he can pull off miracles in that beat up firefly of hers, which makes folk a lot more trusting with their more dubiously legal cargo.

She has other crew, too. The mechanic is young but a genius, keeping Serenity running smooth so’s they’re almost never late from mechanical troubles. There’s a Companion with them, and while she’s never directly involved in any of the crew’s illegal activities, it is a mite easier to get Captain Alleyne’s crew into certain areas than other ships without her. An air of respectability, Alleyne had once said after escaping a tighter spot than normal. Her employer had to agree. The merc, gossip agrees, is pretty dumb and horny. But Alleyne can control him, and the extra muscle is good for the rougher jobs.

Serenity does have its mystery, in the form of the fancy core Doctor and his sister shipping out with them, and why a thief’s ship has a Shepherd of all things – but Rim folk love mystery, and everyone without their feet glued to the dirt knows how lonely it can get out there. A few miscellaneous hands are always good to keep the group from getting too inbred. All in all, they’re a good, reliable crew, steady under pressure and well-led, devoted to getting coin so they stay bought, but not so much as to stick their fingers in pies that aren’t theirs.

There’s only one problem: that damned crazy first mate, Malcolm Reynolds. He’s loyal as a dog, and nobody says otherwise. Been with Captain Alleyne since the war, and has the fighting ability to prove it. But he’s a crazy bastard with less sense in his head than the merc. Fights when he should run and runs when he should fight unless Alleyne is there to say otherwise – and even then, sometimes he can override her own sense. He brawls and curses and swings his way in Alleyne’s wake, and everybody knows she’s the only thing keeping him tethered since the war ended. Usually, he isn’t enough to put an employer off hiring them – but they always watch him with careful eyes as he hooks his thumbs on his gunbelt and smiles at them from next to his captain’s shoulder, and they shudder at the circumstance that would make him take over the ship for Captain Alleyne.

"What did you do?" Major David Parrish shouted at Doctor Evan Lorne as the Earth rumbled underneath them.

"I didn't mean to do it!" Dr. Evan Lorne said, holding the glowing artifact. "It just called to me. I couldn't help it!"

"Next time this happens, just don't," David told him as the ground broke apart under them and they dropped, landing hard on the ground as everything went black.

"Major?"

David groaned, feeling his body scream at him.

"Major... You need to wake up. Now, please," Dr. Lorne said, his voice shaky. "Please."

"I'm awake... I'm ok," David said.

"Can you sit up?"

David nodded jerkily and sat up as his head spun. He looked around as his eyes went wide. "Is this what I think it is?"

"If you think they're ZPMs, then the answer is yes. Are you ok?"

"I- Yeah, of course. I'm tougher than that, Doc. But this is fucking fantastic. McKay will die when he sees this."

"If only," Lorne said darkly as David grinned at him.

"I'm starting to rub off on you," David told him with approval in his voice.

Dr. Lorne looked at him intensely. "Let's hope so, Major."

​Mike stood awkwardly outside Harvey's office, feeling like he was in school again and waiting for the principal. He'd heard rumors about Harvey Specter, none of them good. And while Mike wasn't gullible enough to think he fed on the fear and tears of associates, legends weren't built from nothing.

"So, you must Louis' new prize pony?"​

"Mike Ross." Mike thrust out his hand and tried to suppress a shiver when Harvey looked him up and down without shaking his proffered hand.

"I know. Take a seat." Harvey lead him into the office and shut the room behind them.

"I heard you went to Harvard."

"Ye-" ​

"But we both know the truth of that, don't we, Mike Ross?" Harvey leaned back in his chair, smirking. "Don't insult my intelligence."

"Sir, I-" ​

"Sir," Harvey looked at him with hooded eyes. "I do like the sound of that, but please, call me Harvey. I do believe that we'll be working closely for some time."

Mike blinked stupidly for a second, his brain trying to process what he'd just heard. "You're not going to fire me?"
​
"I think you could be far too useful to waste you now. Louis thinks you and that especially absorbent mind of yours are his ace in the hole. He thinks he's got me beat out for a promotion."

If that was true, Mike was fairly certain Louis was very, very wrong. Harvey gave him a shark's grin, as if he knew just what Mike was thinking. ​

"That's why he's going to loose. As you may have heard I'm a 'disciplinarian' of sorts for you associates." ​

Mike shifted uncomfortably at the way Harvey said 'disciplinarian,' drawing it out like a promise he'd rather take to the sheets than the break room. ​

"I could make your life a living hell. Or you could help me take Louis down."

"Are you blackmailing me?" Mike asked, having finally found his voice again.
​
"Not at all. The choice is entirely up to you." Harvey waited a beat before standing from his desk, prompting Mike to do the same. "Think about it." He said as he reached over, hand outstretched. Mike took it cautiously, wondering if this tiny show of respect was the carrot before the stick. Harvey's touch felt like a brand on Mike's skin and he held on a moment too long before dropping Mike's hand and turning the stack of paperwork on his desk.

Now Mike felt thoroughly dismissed and left the office with a new offer to think about.

They didn’t used to argue over anything, his boys. They were like two sides of the same person, and if they’d been born identical, Frank would really have had some trouble.

But kids grow up. They grow- Not apart… (Frank taught them better than that) but independent. They make their own, independent choices. And sometimes those choices aren’t popular.

Don’t make much sense, either, at first. Frank can’t figure how Neal turned out to be the twin to enlist in the military. Arthur is the one with a soldier’s love of order. He’s the more single-minded, when he’s on a mission, of the two. And Junior has a hard time keeping his eye on a prize; he sees a dozen doors where anybody else (sometimes even his brother) sees one or two. More than that, Neal never knows, til the last minute, which door he’s gonna open. Frank can’t imagine the Army taking too kindly to a mind like Neal’s.

And Arthur- Well. Arthur’s always been a stickler for rules. He never disobeyed Frank as a boy, not once. If Neal’s got a brain like a cluster bomb, little bursts of genius going off all over the place, Arthur’s got a mind like a guided missile. He focuses in on one thing and knows that thing like the back of his hand before he goes after it. Frank can’t begin to understand how that ‘one thing’ came to be becoming the best white collar criminal in the northern hemisphere. All Frank can figure is, grown up, Arthur must like his own rules better than anybody else’s.
