50-Word Stories

Happy Wednesday! I'm Sagitta33 (LJ and DW). Today is Mercury Day. Let's tackle the middle of the week with a micro-story.

All stories have a beginning (status quo, in media res), middle (conflict), and resolution (new status quo). Micro-fiction contains word counts of as little as six words to a hundred. For this first week of July, let's write 50-word stories.

The rules are as follows:

• No more than five prompts in a row.
• No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
• Use the character's full names and the fandom's full name
• No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing, or use the spoiler cut option found here. Unfortunately, DW doesn’t have a cut tag, so use your best judgment when it comes to spoilers.
• If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the above-mentioned spoiler cut. Prompts should be formatted as follows: [Use the character's full names and fandom's full name] Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt

Other guidelines:

You may add specifics or guidelines to your prompts. Original fiction, fanfiction, and fanfic crossovers are welcome.

In this one, Kenny laughs, low and acrid, equally unrepentant.

Haha, thank you! It’s probably my favorite of all the icons I have right now; something about the cool composition in contrast with the canon art style amuses me far too much.

I’m really glad you liked this fic! Alternate Universe is always a fun prompt to work with, and I thought a little game of compare and contrast with the original canon setting and the official fantasy AU would be particularly punchy in such a small word count.

Hector watches from atop the walls as the pyre of Achilles burns beside the Greek camp. The battle had been fierce, Hector’s killing blow lucky, but he’s proud of the outcome nonetheless. The best of their enemies is dead.

Beside him, eyes dark, Cassandra murmurs, “This will not change anything.”

The red thread of fate must tie them together like a hangman’s noose, Six reckons. There’s no other explanation for how they always reel back into each other’s embrace.

It’s always her and Benny, caught in each other’s crosshairs. Always has been.

Always will be, until the world quits spinning.

The arrow sinks into his heel, and Achilles gasps in pain even as his mind floods with relief. He's done his part in the war, gained all the glory he was promised, and now he's done. He'll go to the underworld. He'll be with Patroclus again. He'll be whole again.

Teen Titans (Animated Series) - Terra & Ensemble

It had devolved into a food fight somewhere in the past two minutes— overturned tables, shouting, swearing, globs of cake flying everywhere as the Titans fall into a mad frenzy of sugar and crumbs.

Terra, laughing, ducks for cover and grabs a fistful of baked goods, eager to join in.

Kenny sighs, blinking away the last wisps of a nightmare and the shrieking pain of a bullet to the back, and tries his level best to believe what he’s told.

“I’m fine.”

In hindsight, this is definitely a little more “Comfort, then Hurt” than it is “Hurt, then Comfort”, isn’t it?

Kenny would be an absolutely tragic character if he was from a source material that was even the slightest degree more serious, and I like trying to explore that concept in writing. Thank you for such a lovely prompt with which to do so!

Teeth on his neck, a fist tangled in his hair— Slade falls right back into the familiar dance, lets Addie take the lead like she always has.

And the hatred in her eyes while she works him until he’s seeing stars makes that euphoria taste all the more sickeningly sweet.

She thrusts even deeper, presses just right, and sobs as pleasure tears through her. She shakes with it, overwhelmed, grinning, lets herself breathe, one, twice, then goes right back to it.

Fallout 3 - Lone Wanderer

It shouldn’t have been as hard as it was to find clean water to boil the pasta in, and in retrospect, the Lone Wanderer sort of regrets surviving primarily on alcohol, stimpacks, and spite.

It’s just boxed mac and cheese, but that first bite tastes like the vault.

Like home.

Thank you for the prompt! I’m glad you liked what I did with it; Fallout is one of my favorite sandboxes to noodle around in and this prompt lined up neatly with a lot of my thoughts on the games and how they tie into the concepts of memory and nostalgia.

Author’s note: A modern AU of sorts? One with television news, at least.

“Your sister’s on the news again,” Sevika says, and white-hot fear arcs up Vi’s spine.

Paint-splattered, grinning like an imp, accepting an award for contributions to the arts in Zaun— this, Vi will freely admit, is not what she was expecting.

Still, she’s proud of Jinx, if a bit baffled.

What it means to be the sole survivor is finally sinking in after so many distractions wear thin, and Nora can’t think of anything to do about it but talk about every little thing under a sun that hadn’t always been clouded by nuclear smog.

Thank you for such a good prompt!

I’ve got a real soft spot for Nora (and Nate, but I prefer playing as female characters, so I default to Nora when writing); the horror of what she’s going through is super distressing to think about and I personally don’t think canon did enough with it. I really appreciated the opportunity to write something about it.
