He’s gone. The other half of his soul, the one he’d given up hope of finding. And normally he could count on the others for support, should be able to count on them. But Maureen and Joanne are fighting, and so are Mark and Roger. Roger’s so in denial about his feelings for Mimi that he’s leaving New York entirely, going to Santa Fe, ironically, the place they’d all planned on going together.

He can’t deal with the city. Everywhere there are reminders of him. They alley where they first met, the place where Angel bought him a new coat, the trash can that he used to break into Mark and Roger’s apartment…

It’s not just Angel, either, although that’s the main thing, a gaping hole in his heart. Roger’s gone, Mark is working for a soulless corporation, and his job is just as dull and pointless as he’d told Angel that day on the subway.

None of that would have mattered if Angel was still alive. He’d had a way of making problems seem unimportant, of making ordinary things seem almost magical.

But he’s gone, his shelter, his shield against the world.
And Collins is alone.
