Good morning, everyone! Today’s Friday, and it’s me, [livejournal.com profile] meteorfire, here to deliver the latest theme. It’s been great hosting for you guys again, and I hope you all had as nice of a week as I did, and the weekend is just around the corner.

For today, our theme is Doppelgangers. This can include clones, twins, mirror reflections, a spell gone bad, a stunt double,  mysterious look-alike, and so on.

Here's some quick examples:
  • Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Dark Link & Link, which/who existed first?
  • Doctor Who, any ganger, being given rights hasn’t made the lives of any of the copies better
  • The Walking Dead/Boondocks, Daryl & Murphy, The resemblance was uncanny
  • Any, any, “Has anyone ever told you that you look a lot like ________?
  • Sherlock BBC, John & Harry Watson, when they were kids they used to switch clothes and pretend to be the other—a lot of the pictures of Harry in the Watson family album are actually of John in girl’s clothes, and vice versa.

And as always, remember to follow the rules:
  • Only three prompts from a fandom
  • Only five prompts in a row
  • If one prompt gets filled you can leave a new one
  • No spoilers in your prompts until a week after airdate/publication
  • If your fill contains a spoiler please warn accordingly and leave space for the spoiler.

Have fun, everyone!

The Game (1/2)

Later, neither of them could remember whose idea it had been. It had just been the logical next step. After all, genetics had done all the hard work for them. John was older, but Harry was naturally taller, so for years the tick marks on the doorframe that measured their heights had been almost even. Their hair was the same color, and their mother favored identical shaggy, androgynous styles. Their faces were similar enough.

So people had been confusing one for the other long before they started wearing each other's clothes. It became almost a game to them.

"Harriet?" their mother would call when she saw one of her children passing from the corner of her eye.

"Mum!" John would protest indignantly.

"Sorry, John," she would say, "Someone's tracked dirt into the front entryway. Be a dear and clean it up."

And the next day, she'd say without looking up from the vegetables she was chopping, "John?"

"Mum!" Harriet would say.

And their mother would answer automatically, "Sorry, Harry. Fetch me an onion, would you?"

And the very next day, "Harriet?"

"Come on, Mum!" Harriet would answer, and after she'd gotten her apology she would add smugly, "No, you were right the first time. I'm Harry."

They soon found that if Harry was wearing one of John's jumpers, or if John had on a skirt, they could prolong the confusion almost indefinitely until their mother was beside herself. She tried to sabotage them by cutting John's hair short, but Harry just took matters into her own hands with a pair of mirrors and the kitchen scissors. Harry made such a mess of her hair that she and John had to wear hats and hoods for weeks to cover up the damage, but their mother never tried to interfere again. They even managed to pull off the switch at school once or twice before Harry failed one of John's tests, and they had to admit the charade in order to get John a chance to retake it.

John was about twelve, and their game was beginning to get somewhat more difficult, when Harry announced quietly but definitively, "I wish we could switch forever."

"Why?" John answered dubiously. Their game was great fun, but he had no desire to be his sister full-time.

"Because if I were a boy, it would be okay that I like girls," said Harry.

John thought very carefully before replying, "I think it's okay either way."

"That's not what I heard," Harry mumbled before changing the subject. But a few months later she had apparently taken John's words to heart, because she announced to their mother that she was a girl who liked other girls, and if anyone had a problem with that then they could get bent. Mrs. Watson declared that she had never been prouder.

Animorphs, Rachel & Taylor, she sometimes wonders if Tobias's decision to have her spare Taylor's life was because he was that much of a better, more forgiving person than her... Or if it was because his captor looked so God damn much like his girlfriend

NCIS, Gibbs, he sees pieces of his daughter in every younger girl he meets and he's spent the time since their deaths fruitlessly trying to find the parts he loved about Shannon in other women

Date: 2012-02-09 04:00 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] serendipityxxi.livejournal.com
Gibbs sees echoes of his little girl all around him some days. He sees her in kids walking down the street and waiting in line at the grocery, he sees her in the kids they come across on their cases and especially in the grown up lines of Maddie Tyler’s face, but most of all he sees her in his team.

He sees her in the proud twinkle in Abby’s eyes when he praises her and the mischievous grin when she teases him. It had been Abby’s pigtails that charmed him when he first met her; they had bobbed around her head while she hummed happily to herself, totally wrapped up in her work just like he remembered Kelly would when she was doing her homework. Abby still has a childlike wonder and joy in discovery that Kelly had at eight, Gibbs hopes Kelly would have kept it well into adulthood too.

He sees Kelly in Ziva’s serious face when he’s explaining something to her; Ziva soaks up information like a sponge just like Kelly did. He taught her to play baseball a few months ago, just like he taught Kelly. He still smiles at the image of the tough grown up ex-Mossad turned NCIS Agent grinning like a little girl as she raced across the field, long brown pony tail streaming behind her to snatch the old ball out of the air. Ziva challenges him when she thinks he’s wrong and that makes him think of his girl too, she’d never let him get away with anything – hands on her hips, head titled just like her mother “No Daddy, we’re not supposed to have caffeine after dark,” she’d scold. It almost made him regret banning coca cola and hot chocolate before bed, almost. He sees Kelly in Ziva in the way that Ziva’s willing to forgive her own father so much... Eli David doesn’t deserve forgiveness. He hopes if he had betrayed Kelly like that she would never have forgiven him. He hopes Eli David’s guilt eats at him, the way his own guilt at leaving his girls does.

He even sees Kelly in the petty squabbles between Tony and McGee. Kelly had wanted a little brother, and Tim fills that role for Tony perfectly. They have the same arguments that Gibbs imagines Kelly and her brother might have had. Tony would have made a good big brother, Gibbs sees it in the way he pushes McGee to be better, to be independent but also wouldn’t leave the kid to twist in the wind if he fell into trouble. He imagines Kelly would have followed Tony around and copied his every move and DiNozzo would have preened and showed off for her like he does in the bullpen.

If Gibbs weren’t a laconic man he would talk to Kelly, tell her of these grown children who have wormed their way into his heart despite his best efforts to keep everyone at bay. He would assure her that they haven’t replaced her, they’re not better because they’re alive and she’s gone, he loves them equally like a father should.

If he was going to talk to anyone it would be Shannon, he’d tell her he couldn’t love anyone as much as he loved her. He’d tell he tried and he’d be ashamed to admit it. And Shannon? She’d laugh at him. Remind him she was gone and she loved him, she wouldn’t want him to be lonely. But he’s a marine, Semper Fi, always faithful, he can’t let go of Shannon.

The only woman who’d truly penetrated his defences was brassy, bold Jenny Sheppard, but even Jenny with all her brains and her courage couldn’t touch Shannon’s memory, the guilt ate away at him until he found himself sabotaging their relationship just as he had every other one that came before. He wants to be happy, he does, he just can’t give up his ghosts; it wouldn’t be fair to them. He didn’t lie to Ziva when he said you’re never lonely when you have kids, it’s true he has his team and his memories and he’ll do the best he can and protect them to the end.

I apologize in advance for the horrible pun of a title.

You don't know what you're doing as he's pushing you against the cold wall in an empty room. His hands fumble at the zipper on your jacket, and after he gets it open, he lays his hands around your abdomen. You can feel how warm he is through your tee shirt. You look around for cameras. They're everywhere in here.

"You know you're incredibly good looking," he says.

You turn your eyes to your counterpart, Agent Lincoln Lee, Fringe Division. Because here, Fringe is an operation, a real department, and not a dusty basement lab at Harvard, with files swept under the rug.

It's bizarre, really. This man has your face and your voice, but he has something you can't quite put your finger on. He has a swagger about him. That's it, swagger. If he didn't, you'd push him away, but you you don't. Instead, you reach up and touch his artfully messy hair. You did your hair like it so you could pass for him; it takes forever to look right.

"That's... it's funny," you reply finally. He stares at you and it's weird, like watching video of yourself, except you'd be hoping someone turns the camera away from you. His gaze his cool and confident. You wonder how he does it. You're the same person, with presumably similar lives, and yet he's everything you're not.

"I'm not gay," you tell him. "But it's cool if you are. I'm just... not."

"I'm not gay either," he replies. "But aren't you curious about what's different? Or the same?" His hands drop to your belt and this time you have to laugh.

"You want to get me naked so you can see your dick from an outside perspective?"

He raises his eyebrows. "Maybe yours is bigger."

"Maybe you're just suffering from a severe case of vanity."

He smiles, his lips curling up, the right side before the left. "It's possible," he says, and he carefully takes off your glasses. He drops them into your jacket pocket. "You're not curious about this at all?"

You lick your lower lip, a nervous habit, and shake your head. It's not because you aren't, but because it feels somehow wrong. Is it incest? Or is it masturbation? You laugh at the sheer absurdity of it all.

"What?" he asks, and brings his hand to your neck, running his thumb lightly against your skin. You shudder, the vibration of his touch sparking throughout your entire body, and he smiles. "I like that spot, too," he says, his voice low and rough. You didn't know your voice could do that. His voice. Our voice.

You notice your breathing is heavy. How long has that been going on for? You lick your lip again and ask, "What do you want to do?"

He doesn't say anything. He moves in slowly, so slowly you barely even realize he's moving until his lips are pressing to yours. You open your mouth to him, his tongue hot against your own, and wrap your arms around his body. You wonder if you were both fudging the truth about your sexualities. Or maybe it is just vanity, wanting to see and feel everything we both actually are. Maybe you have everything he has. Swagger and confidence. Vanity.

He is, after all, you.
