Date: 2012-04-07 04:18 pm (UTC)Mini-Fill: I Get By, Hotch, PG
Date: 2012-04-08 09:09 pm (UTC)This isn't just because such a parent breaks, eventually, in one way or another.
It's because sometimes, when that person breaks, the jagged shards of psyche strewn around in the process cut more in more detrimental ways than you can imagine.
Everyody knows, when Hotch goes on leave, that it'll probably be for good. Foyet taking Haley would have been enough to put Hotch off the job, but that the bastard took Hotch's son, too... The official investigation rules in Hotch's favor, of course. Nobody's gonna try a decorated FBI agent for killing the monster who murdered his entire family. Even one who beat a man to death with his bare fists.
However, the unofficial profile the team can't help but put together, silent yet understood, says that whether or not Hotch had a right to kill George Foyet... He's not in the right mind to keep on working against men like Foyet. Even after the standard period of leave. They all keep their fears to themselves initially, but eventually evidence begins to surface. Carefully hidden or 'overlooked', but there. And they love Hotch. They would do a lot for him. But with six livelihoods at stake... They can't turn a blind eye forever.
After a long and expertly-worded conversation with the team, Hotch puts in the paperwork for an early retirement.
Nowadays, he spends most of his time travelling. Keeping in touch with old friends. Sometimes he happens to call or get a call right about the time that the team is handling a rough case involving a family. And if those particular cases tend to resolve themselves rather... messily. Well. There's never enough proof to connect any one of them to any of the others.
And everyone who knows him and knows what happened, remarks that Aaron is recovering unbelievably well, considering how much he loved Jack and even his ex-wife.
Hotch always smiles and says that his friends help him through.

Date: 2012-04-08 12:02 am (UTC)There are a dozen stories that tell of the origins of the most popular song, a pretty little four note tune, but which was the truth had been lost for decades. Wherever it had come from, it was a monstrous crime to silence the song.
So you never hunt a mockingjay, no matter how desperate you are, because everyone knows that those who try to kill a mockingjay show the evil in their souls and suffer the terrible destruction of all they hold dear.

Date: 2012-04-07 05:43 pm (UTC)Fill: "Blueberry Yogurt"
Date: 2015-06-25 08:27 pm (UTC)Michael didn't even remember himself, but Nate would - a long time ago, like, when Nate was in kindergarten long time ago, some bullies beat him up. And Michael tried to stop them because he knew what would happen at home if Nate came home bruised and cut up. And Miss Dillon saw them, those kids, and yelled, and they scattered, but by then, Nate's shirt was torn and Michael's nose was bleeding and there wouldn't be any way to hide it when they got home.
Miss Dillon listened to Nate sob and hiccup and studied Michael, and took them both back into the school. She cleaned them up and gave Nate a new - used - shirt to wear, and gave the boys both yogurt to eat until she could take them home.
It was the first time outside of Mom that anyone had taken up for them. The first time that they'd let anyone see anything bad behind their dad. Nate still remember Miss Dillon's yogurt to this day.
He knew Michael did, too.

Date: 2012-04-07 05:44 pm (UTC)Fill: Prize Egg - Dean/Cas, PG-13
Date: 2012-04-08 01:49 pm (UTC)"The- It's not an exercise, Cas. It's fun."
"I don't understand how this is fun."
Dean shows Cas great patience. They went through, basically, this exact conversation on Valentine's Day. And don't get Dean started on Christmas.
"It's fun because you never know where you're gonna find an egg or what you're gonna find in it."
"But you know where to find each egg, Dean. You hid them. And you know what you'll find inside because you filled them with candy."
Dean sighs. He's patient, but he's not a saint.
"Cas, dude, it's suppose to be fun for you."
"I don't eat candy."
Dean doesn't bother asking what Cas would fill the eggs with instead... He would probably say 'peace between men' or something.
"Well, you'll like what I'll give you if you find all the eggs. You know, as a prize."
And Cas does. Bu there's some confusion when they meet up with Sam later and Cas tells him that they've been hunting eggs all day.
Sam says, "Me and Dean used to hunt eggs when we were kids. He always filled the eggs with his own favorite candy so I'd give them all to him. I didn't mind because he always let me win the big prize at the end."
Dean used to put a roll of money or movie tickets or something in Sammy's big prize egg.
But Cas looks thoughtful and says, "I don't think your brother could fit my 'prize' into an egg, but I do agree that a blowj-"
"Cas!"
Dean is equal parts amused and horrified. Well. Maybe not quite equal.
Sam goes almost apoplectic. "Dean, Easter is a holy day!"
'Tell that to the horny angel,' Dean wants to say, but he likes his angel just the way he is and he doesn't want to so much as suggerst otherwise.
