Once they were sitting in the cab on their way to meet Lestrade, Sherlock turned to John.

“You aren’t asking me why I was dismissed,” he said.

“I didn’t think it was my business,” said John. He looked at him expectantly.

“I exposed a chain of weapon dealers, involving the people in our and allied military. Alas, I underestimated my opponents – there was another player from the outside, merely a go-through at the first sight. Turns out, he organised it in the first place. Moriarty, they call him. He got me implicated as the real culprit, claiming I set up the others. The idea sounded ludicrous, but he is very clever and very persuasive. However, he didn’t count on certain personages in British government who like keeping their eye on me. Loathe as I am to give them any credit, they got me out of prison and backed up the evidence exposing the real culprits. However, they are ever intent to be a thorn in my eye, so they used this excuse to arrange my dismissal from the army. Pity. I was on the verge of exposing a white slavery ring,” Sherlock said.

What shocked John the most was, surprisingly, not the contents of his companion’s confession, but his tone. He sounded merely mildly annoyed: neither angry at being imprisoned under false charges nor regretful that he was unable to bring slavers to the justice. For the first time, John wondered just what exactly he got himself into.

“Anyway,” said Sherlock, “here’s the thing: I don’t play nice. I don’t care about political repercussions or saving face. All I want is to solve the case. If you can’t handle it, better not to get involved.”

John merely smiled and nodded. “I wouldn’t have it any other way,” he said, glad that his companion seemed to be incorruptible at least. Maybe he merely has problems with emoting. I can handle that, he thought.

They remained silent for the rest of the ride, each silently trying to figure the other out.
