Greetings again,comment_ficcers! I’m still with_rainfall, and this Tuesday’s theme is alternate ending.

Endings are difficult things to get right in canon. They need to tie up any major loose ends and make some sort of sense. They can be wrapped up in a bow (“so the curtain falls on the March family”) or left ambiguous (“and his fate is known only to those who venture into the deeps”). They can be triumphant or depressing, realistic or entirely fantastical, predictable or unexpected, controversial or satisfying, or some mixture of those two extremes. But if the fans aren’t reconciled to them, the creator has a lot to answer for.

So, people, what endings were you dissatisfied with?

The ending you choose to change doesn’t have to be a series finale or the last few pages of a book; it can be the end of a season, an episode/chapter or a character’s story arc.

“Good evening, John,” said a girl dressed in black with a silver ankh around her throat.

John Constantine ignored her and rummaged around his pockets for Silk Cuts, as if to defy what she stood for.

The girl laughed. The merry sound was at odds with her grim clothing. “No, John, I’m not here for you today. Just dropping by to say hello.”

“Hello,” said John, still not facing her. He lit a cigarette.

The girl smiled and looked around. Her eyes alit on a poster. “You know, that wasn’t how it happened,” she said.

John thought about answering, waging between getting involved with one of their lot and being nice to someone who will send him off once he finally croaks. He decided to go with the second option. “What didn’t happen how?”

“Romeo and Juliet.” The girl pointed to the poster.

“Well, you would know.”

“See, the families found out. Of course they did – they barely hid it. They decided that them running away would be a disgrace to both houses and agreed for a ceasefire. The girl was sullied and giving her to Paris was out of the question. She further ruined her position by bedding the very murderer of much-beloved Mercutio. They actually poisoned her. When Romeo came to her resting place, Paris was lying in the wait and wounded him mortally. Then, he used the sleeping potion and bloodied clothes of Mercutio to fake his death in order to escape persecution. The prince was none the wiser.”

“And then ol’ Bard decided it wouldn’t do.”

“Well, actually, my sister/brother decided the lust didn’t play large enough role, so she made an agreement with him to use poetic license.”

“No good can come out of bargaining with that one.”

“Ah, that’s a story for another time.”

Steve gets up slowly, stiff from so many years asleep. He looks over, trying to hide the little leap in his heart. Bucky’s hair is a mess, his limbs tangled in his blankets. Steve smiles, Bucky was always a restless sleeper. He moves over to sit on the edge Bucky’s bed, smoothing his hair back from his face. Bucky mutters his name and rolls towards him, resting his head in Steve’s lap before finally settling. When the agent comes in a few minutes later, they’re curled up together, sleeping peacefully.

Horatio spent every moment he could sitting by his bedside. The image of blood covering his chest and pooling around his body haunted him to the point he couldn’t shake it unless he was there sitting next to Speed hearting the rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor as Speed lay in a coma. He's wrapped his St Michael's medallion around Speed's hand and prayed every day for his friend, his lover to open his eyes. It had been nearly a week since the shooting in the jewelry store, since the EMTs pulled him away from Speed's body and rushed him to the trauma center saving his life. Tired but unwilling to leave, he clasped Speed's hand and laid his head down next to their hands even though he knew his back would hate him in the morning

He was dreaming of Speed's hands caressing him, the feel of his roughened fingers caressing his cheek, when the fog cleared from his brain, he realized he really was feeling fingers caressing his cheek. Looking up he saw the single most wonderful sight. Speed's eyes. Open and looking at him.

Reaching up, he ran his fingers along his lover's cheek, ignoring the tears that fell. "Welcome back. I thought I'd lost you."

Quietly, his voice harsh, Speed whispered, "I would never leave you."
