Thursday: Magical Realism
Nov. 15th, 2012 09:00 amHello my friends! As you may already know, it's Thursday and I am your host
mahmfic. Today's theme is Magical Realism. It's a personal favorite of mine so I couldn't resist.
What is magical realism? In very basic terms it is magic in the real world... but even though there is magic everything is still normal even though it's not. Yeah, I know I'm horrible at explaining things that's why I am providing links to do it for me. Wikipedia's article on Magical Realism and TV Tropes article on the subject. If you still aren't sure please take a look at AO3's variety of fic that is tagged with 'magical realism'.
Magical Realism gives everyone a lot of room for creativity. Faeries, soul-suckers, magical witty-knitters, telepathy, soulmates, you name it.
*waves magic wand* The Rules:
+No more than five prompts in a row.
+No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
+If one of your prompts is filled, feel free to prompt again.
+No spoilers in the prompts.
+If your fill contains spoilers please warn and/or leave at least three spaces.
*a touch of faerie dust* The Format for Prompts:
Fandom, Character, Prompt
Fandom, Character/Character, Prompt
*and here's your prince* Examples:
Sherlock BBC, Mycroft+Sherlock, in order to protect his younger brother, Mycroft is forced to give up his living, beating heart and have it replaced with a mechanical one
Torchwood, Gwen+ensemble, She hasn't told them her secret. That she doesn't have any magical abilities like everyone else.
Have a magically (realistic) day everyone!

Date: 2012-11-15 02:51 pm (UTC)A dragon is for life, not just for Christmas
Date: 2012-11-16 01:22 pm (UTC)Loki pouts. “You do not like my gift?”
Darcy deflates somewhat at the guilt his dejection incurs in her. “It’s not that – dragons are cool and everything but, Loki, I live in a dorm. I live in this shitty little space that’s barely big enough for the two of us, let alone a dragon. And when I’m not there I’m in an even shittier RV, or a lab, or college, or some other place where pets are discouraged if not outright banned.”
“She would not live inside. Are there no green spaces for her to inhabit around your residence and workplace?”
“No. There is absolutely no place I could put a dragon that would not cause SHIELD to descend on us with another lecture about responsibility and public safety.”
“We could set Amber on any agent foolish enough to attempt to reprimand us.”
“Amber?” Darcy queries. She glances down at the baby dragon curled up in Loki’s lap. Eyes of bright, golden amber stare mournfully up at her as if the dragon senses it is not wanted. Darcy groans and buries her face in her hands. “You named it didn’t you? Crap; you’ve already named it and now we have a pet dragon that we can’t keep because it’s a dragon and normal people don’t keep dragons.”
“Normal is overrated.”
Darcy doesn’t reply. She’s too busy trying to fix this to reply.
“If you truly do not want her then I will return Amber to where I found her,” Loki says at last, sounding both sullen and reluctant.
Darcy sighs. “It’s not that I don’t want her Loki – I just don’t know where I’d keep her.”
Loki considers this for a moment. “I think perhaps there is a solution to our predicament. I know of someone who may be willing to house the little one. We can visit her when we please and in the meantime she will be cared for by one with time for such things.”
Darcy grins. “That would work. That would be perfect; if they agree, of course.”
Smirking, Loki replies, “I believe I can convince them to open their home and their heart.”
Still grinning, Darcy takes a seat beside Loki and tentatively strokes Amber’s scaly head. The dragon happily accepts the petting and closes its eyes. Loki beams down at the two of them and Darcy can’t help but wonder who Loki has in mind as a dragon-sitter. She’s just the tinniest bit terrified of asking, because she has a sneaking suspicion that their name might rhyme with park, and the idea of such a person armed with a dragon is...quite amusing, actually.
Attempting not to giggle, Darcy curls into Loki’s side. “Thanks for the gift, by the way. It was very thoughtful of you.”
Loki’s reply is a kiss to her forehead. “Just wait until you see what I have planned for our anniversary.”

Date: 2012-11-15 02:51 pm (UTC)The Heart Out Of You
Date: 2012-11-15 11:55 pm (UTC)And then his struggles, and the vibrations they cause along the threads of the web, bring the Thing itself.
Slowly, almost tenderly, it opens up his chest cavity. It takes out his beating heart, and swallows it whole.
"Beautiful child, I think I'll keep you here forever," it coos. Sherlock stares blankly; all of the spirit has been leeched from his eyes.
Later, Mycroft comes. "No," he whispers, horror-stricken. Sherlock blinks and tilts his head, but he doesn't feel anything.
Mycroft pulls Sherlock out of the web and carries him away.
Mycroft takes Sherlock home, and lays him down on his bed. For a rather long time, Mycroft simply stands there and looks down at his dead-eyed little brother. And then he leaves, and when he comes back he's holding a knife, a large needle and a length of thread.
He cleaves open his own chest. He reaches past his ribs and pulls out his heart, then shoves it into the hole over the place where his brother's heart should be. He means to sew it up, next, so that no one need know Sherlock was ever heartless, but...
Well, it doesn't really matter, does it?
Sherlock looks around, groggy and confused. He looks at Mycroft, with the hole in his chest. He looks at the heart now beating within his own still-open chest cavity.
"Mycroft, you idiot," he mutters.
He takes the needle and thread, and he sews himself closed. Then he leaves the room, in search of everything he needs.
He takes the insides out of the big old clock, casting aside everything that doesn't seem necessary. He finds some wire and some silken threads, to bind everything together. He encases it all in silver.
Last, but most importantly, he uses his own blood to draw certain symbols onto his creation. For life.
He takes the cold, makeshift heart to Mycroft. He places it in his brother's chest, and then sews up the hole.
"Aren't you supposed to be smart?" he says, when he sees something like life flowing into Mycroft's eyes.
Mycroft raises his eyebrows.

There are two brothers who live in London, name of Holmes. Everyone who meets the younger brother knows that there is something off about him, although most dismiss it as being nothing more than a side-effect of his unsettling genius. The older brother has the honorary title of Ice Man, among those who know of him.
The brothers are the only ones who know this, but the older brother has a cold magic-made substitute for a heart, because his very own heart beats inside the younger brother's chest. Not many people know this, because it is not an especially common thing, but the living, beating heart of another is never quite the same as your own.
Somewhere else in London, a Thing-From-Inbetween has stepped into human skin and given himself the name "Moriarty".

Date: 2012-11-15 08:47 pm (UTC)"... is that confetti."
Looking back from the kazoo and confetti in his hands and Darcy's dark expression was answer enough. "Dude, seriously? We went over this like a thousand times!"
"..."
Fitz shrugged, held the kazoo to his lips and threw the confetti anyway. "There, the pity party's done and over with. Now level with me, did you deviate from the plan?"
"Her... feelings were not mutual. She made it quite clear," Darcy said tersely, grimacing at the glittering shapes of hearts, stars, and champagne glasses.
Alright, so maybe he'd gone a bit overboard, but the wedding confetti was on sale at the local Jo-Ann's and if there was one thing Fitz couldn't resist, it was a sale. "So maybe I misread the situation a little. But that doesn't mean we give up! Look how well it turned out for the Beast! That frog prince guy! The little mermaid chick!"
"I appreciate your concern, but it's unnecessary. We'll be fine. I don't crave close contact anyway," was Darcy's stiff reply.
"Gigi might be, I mean at least she turns into something kind of cute and cuddly when it happens! You on the other hand... besides, I know you, Darce. You never fall hard for anyone. It's Lizzie B or bust, my friend. You can't keep holding people at an arm's length - and I'm speaking in the figurative and literal sense here. It's weird. And just think about what a disadvantage you two are at if anyone decides to kidnap you and hold you for some ridiculous amount of ransom! No, we've got to break the curse. Besides, we promised your mom didn't we?"
"She loathes me, Fitz."
"Your mom?"
That earned him the Glare of Utter Contempt from Darcy. But it softened into something a little more forlorn as he said the next words, "No. Lizzie."
Fitz only grinned, "See? Vulnerability does you a world of good! Try that next time!"
And with that he pounced on his friend with a loud "Bro Hug!", completely ignoring Darcy's splutters of protest.
In a poof of smoke, he was left holding Darcy's clothes and a twitching, very irate lobster trying to take off his fingers.
"Besides," Fitz said with a wicked grin, "I've already dropped Lizzie B a huge hint."

Date: 2012-11-15 07:30 pm (UTC)Every night Character A goes home and eats the dinner that's been laid out for them, watches tv, takes a shower, puts on a blindfold, and goes to bed. Then Character B climbs in next to them. They've been married for years and Character A has never seen Character B's face, because of some unspecified curse. How things turn out is up to the author, I just love this fairy tale.
