Date: 2012-11-20 12:50 pm (UTC)The Flame Alchemist (part 1/2)
Date: 2012-11-23 03:37 am (UTC)So, he practices and experiments with his power. He becomes powerful, and it doesn't matter that no one knows or that his grades at school aren't as good as they used to be. He's going to be a superhero one day soon, he just needs to learn a bit more about controlling his power first.
He's sixteen years old when he decides that he's ready. He dresses up in the costume he's been preparing, all dark blue and black flame-patterns, and white gloves with his symbol stenciled in red on them, and he takes to the darkling streets.
Everything goes well for the first few nights. Many criminals are cowed by the mere presence of a superhero, even an unknown like him, and all others are easily captured or sent scurrying by his fire. It's easy.
Then he fights his first supervillain.
She's a lovely woman and dressed to flaunt it, and maybe he's a little bit distracted, but he is a teenager. That isn't really why he loses, anyway; this is a woman who knows how to fight, and must have been practising for quite some time. She has fingers that harden and extend so that they're like knives, or spears, except that these can cut through concrete, and it isn't long before he's standing still with those sharp edges right next to his throat.
"It's almost a pity," she says, and her voice is smooth and somehow suggestive of dark chocolate. "You might have become someone, if you'd been a little smarter."
Her eyes are cold and her smile is cold; everything about this woman is cold. Roy knows that he is about to die.
The woman cries out, suddenly, and stumbles back. He should take the opportunity to get away, but his legs won't cooperate with his brain. The woman has clasped her left hand over her right shoulder; he glimpses red liquid - blood - trickling out from behind that elegant hand.
She starts towards him, but something small and fast-moving hits the ground in front of her, throwing up a small explosion of earth and garden-plants.
There's a sniper watching over him.
The villain makes a low, furious sound, and flees down the nearest alley, swiftly vanishing into the darkness.
Roy goes home, sneaks in through his bedroom window. He's surprised to find a girl waiting for him; a pretty and dignified blonde. Riza, from school, and there's a rifle at her feet.
"You should be more careful about who you get into fights with, Roy," she says.
"How...?"
"I saw you experimenting. You should be more careful about that, too."
After that, Riza becomes his trusted ally. She watches over him from above, and covers for him when he needs it. She isn't afraid to tell him when he's overly cocky or reckless, or when he takes things too far. They become known; he's the Flame Alchemist and she's the Hawk's Eyes.

Fill: Let's Kill Tonight (Warnings: violence, murders)
Date: 2012-11-20 07:21 pm (UTC)The media doesn't quite know what to make of him. Some are calling him a serial killer, others are hailing him as a hero. Going after crooked insurance firms, the people who denied coverage to the sick and dying, refused life-saving treatments to patients, bumped people down on the organ list.
"Those bastards got what was coming to them," growls a young man being interviewed at a kind of rally/protest/vigil, holding a picture of his mother with the words "Pre-Existing Condition" stamped across the photo. "I wish I could have done it myself."
"They could have saved my husband, and they didn't. I'm not surprised someone's going around ripping them open. Not that they have hearts in there, or souls." The woman has been crying, but her eyes shine with fervor.
"They called it "experimental," this treatment that would have saved my son's life. Bull. They just didn't want to pay for it. I used to work for companies like them. Not anymore." the man with the dark hair and bloodshot eyes is clutching a framed photo of a young boy, nine at most. "My Sam is dead. They killed him. Now, somebody's going around killing them. I call that poetic justice."
Two
She dabs at her eyes with a handkerchief, waiting her turn to lay a rose on the casket. She is not the wife, or even his mistress, but a confidant, a family friend. It's never questioned that the late Mr. Salvador left her such a generous portion of his wealth. She was such a comfort to the family in his final months, at his bedside once, then twice, and then three times a week without fail at 3pm, and always bringing those special teas that eased his pain.
She has never made the mistake that so many women like her do: coming in when the man is already teetering on the edge of life and death, making him leave his loyal wife and marry her instead, signing over everything. She is not flashy. And she is never caught.
She thinks she'll go by "Sophie" for the next con. A trustworthy name, comforting and soft. She likes it. She's sure the next man to taste her poison will like it too.
Three
"Aw, come on, Suzie, why are you crying? They were weak, honey. Selfish. Stupid. Not like you."
Suzie raises her head from the floor, cheek stained with the blood of her best friend. Said best friend is lying in the corner, torn apart by the latest contraption she and Suzie had encountered. They were the last two. Hours earlier they'd woken in a room with ten other kids from the senior class, and been guided through a labyrinth of puzzles and death traps by the voice of this teasing man who kept making geeky references. Alex and Sarah, the two nerds of the group, had gotten most of the jokes. They'd nearly made it, but Alex had gotten caught on some spikes and Sarah and tried to save him, and they'd both died in the last room.
"Why are you doing this?!" Suzie screams, slamming her fists onto the floor.
"To make you stronger, girl."
Suzie sobs, then staggers to her feet. "Fine. But I'm going to find you, you bastard, and then I'm going to kill you." She takes the senior class ring from her best friend's severed finger and opens the door.
Hardison cracks his knuckles as he watches the girl make her way to the final chamber. The Final Girl, and a kickass smart girl at that. He's so proud of her.
"Age of the geek, baby."
