Curled up in an armchair, Daniel reads aloud. "A mere fourty-five minutes drive from Banff lies the picturesque, legendary beauty of Lake Louise, an essential destination for visitors to the Rocky Mountains. The glacial lake maintains a perfect, mirror-like stillness, reflecting the beauty of the mountains behind it, the snow-caps a dazzling white even in the dead of summer."
"Mountains," John repeats contemplatively, sprawled out along the couch with one leg thrown carelessly over the back as if to take up as much room as possible. The look in his green eyes is unfocused and far away, and his lips purse slightly. "Huge slabs of rock and earth far higher than any of our skyscrapers...."
"Hundreds of times higher," Daniel agrees. Even including the network of tunnels that stretch out under the city, their tiny home in space would be dwarfed by the bulk of a mountain. They've found a few photographs, but he's always found it difficult to comprehend.
"I just can't wrap my brain around it," John said, as if attuned to Daniel's thoughts. He turns over to sprawl on his stomach and lifts his head to look up at Daniel. "Do you think there's a chance we'll ever see them for ourselves? Do you think we'll ever find Earth again?
Daniel knows he should point out the millions upon millions of star systems in the universe, that unless they can somehow miraculously uncover and decypher the Strangers navigation systems, it will be impossible to find Earth in their lifetime. That there was no guarentee that Earth still even... existed.
Instead he smiles, and for a moment allows himself to indulge in the frivelous but oh so essential hope of John's fantasy. "Perhaps someday we can see them together." ~~~~
