Fill: All The Cool Kids Do It...
Date: 2013-05-20 12:08 am (UTC)He'd run to Midgard, wrapped in Sight muddling rumors and tattered belief, seeking refuge on the battleground of old. He'd gone to be alone, to rage and scream and search for some kind of evidence in the frozen waste of an abandoned and forgotten battlefield that not all Jotuns were monsters, so it was ironic that the very act of avoidance had attracted attention.
"You can see me?"
There was a boy with snow white hair and a shepherd's crook standing along the path, shoeless and dressed in ragged clothes like a street urchin, and as he didn't appear to be moving as he watched with hungry eyes the play of mortal children. Loki changed his own steps to avoid him. But the boy noticed, and Loki steadfastly continued on his way, and still the boy followed. He grinned at every glare. Laughed at and rebutted every insult, and when Loki determinedly refused to respond he tossed a snowball at Loki's face.
Which, of course, meant war.
In hindsight there had been something off with Jack's many, well-timed snowballs.
But which meant no matter his intent Loki wasn't alone. He'd found his evidence, and Jack teased off Loki's boots and too-many layers of formal wear. Jack showed him how to dance in the snow and skate on ice; how to speak to and ride the wind; and when, finally, Loki Jotunson had truly mastered his own powers over Winter... well...
To say Bunny enjoyed the Winter of '68 would be a bit of an overstatement.

Fill
Date: 2013-04-27 05:17 pm (UTC)And then of course, there's the fact that he's hot...
Aster rolls his eyes when Jack shares his list. "Well, of course," he mocks Jack. "Frost, why don't you try thinking with some part of your body you don't wear inside of your pants?"
"Oh, Aster... that's not very nice," says Toot Faerie, one of Jack's female housemates, in Jack's defense. She looks over her shoulder at the gaggle of firstyear Hufflepuff girls that follow her around everywhere (Aster deemed them the "Tooth Faries" in September, and the name has stuck ever since) to see if any of them overheard Aster's suggestive comment.
Aster rolls his eyes, but Nick (another Griffindor) says, "Pitch Black isn't very nice, Toot. He's a Slytherin... And even if he wasn't," he says before Jack can object to his house-ism, "He'd still be bad news. He practices the Dark Arts in secret, and he associates with former Death Eaters."
"We don't know that that's true," Jack argues, but the fight goes out of him when Sandy - even Sandy - lays a hand on Jack's shoulder and, seeing him turn, signs, 'We don't know that it isn't.'
These are Jack's friends. He knows that they mean well - they mean to protect him, from the very real dangers that still exist in their world, and from the good old-fashioned dangers that could await his heart.
But Jack doesn't need protection. He's taken care of himself for as long as he can remember. (In fact, that's all that he can remember.) He's a Hufflepuff, but he has a secret, and he can decide for himself whether Pitch is worth the risk of getting his heart broken.
Jack lets the topic drop and has a few more butterbeers with his friends. But he hangs back when the rest of them start to head back to Hogwarts (avoiding Sandy's sad and worried eyes) saying he has some last minute errand he forget to run before he leaves Hogsmead.
None of them look entirely convinced (only the fact that she needs to get her "Faries" back to the castle before someone notices them missing causes her to leave him, and Aster goes grumbling something about "kick his foolish arse myself") but they all know that when Jack has his mind made up about something, his mind is made up.
And Jack's mind is made up. He's going to approach the inapproachable Pitch Black. He's going to become his friend... maybe more. And he's going to save Pitch from himself.
Jack leaves the Hog's Head once his friends are long gone and heads for the tavern where he knows some of the older Slytherins boys gather.
Maybe he's crazy for all of this, but it wouldn't be the first time he's attempted something Toot or Sandy would call "insane". And, really, what is the point of being a wizard... if Jack can't accomplish something magical?

Date: 2013-05-15 07:12 pm (UTC)It's always there, buried deep in Isazika’s mind. When she's in class, listening to the teacher, taking notes, laughing at Mallory's muttered comments, nodding sympathetically to Darren's complaints, eating the subpar lunch Tate packed (like lunch can make up for taking her away from Mom), riding the bus home and sitting next to Yelena because they live two streets from each other – it’s always there.
Tate looks at her sometimes like he knows. He probably does. Mom had it, too.
That’s no reason to take her away. Mom would’ve never hurt her. (Mom couldn’t.)
Mallory is a smartass and Darren is kind. Yelena is wise, in the way some latchkey kids are. The teachers have no idea how smart Izzy is, or the fact that that’s not her name. Tate calls her Izzy, she’s registered at the school as Izzy, everyone knows her as Izzy and assume it’s short for Isabel or Isabella, but it’s not. Her name is old.
Her name is legend.
Tate isn’t short for Tatum either. She doesn’t know his real name, or even Mom’s, but her name is a secret, and the schoolchildren jabbering around her have no idea -
It’s always there.
Don’t worry, sweetling, Mom had whispered, that night Tate found them, with a mark carved into his skin that Mom couldn’t break. I’ll come back for you. Until then, wait. Bury it all and wait for me.
Eight years and Isazika is still waiting, in the back of Izzy’s mind.
Tate looks at her like she’s dangerous, like he might have to put her down. If he tries –
Well, Isazika is a legend’s name, and those are big shoes to fill. They’ll fit, though.
Yelena comments on the 21st century history test while Darren complains to Mallory about their literature quiz (some old book called Harry Potter; Izzy didn’t really like it), and Izzy, as always, plays her part perfectly.
Mom told her to wait. She still has time. But if nothing has happened by graduation, she knows where to start.
(Tate’s always watching her, and he has to know.)
