Stiles didn’t go to school for the rest of the year. He took online homeschool courses and went to therapy three times a week, and then twice a week and finally once a week until his doctors declared him well enough to go back to school if that was what he wanted. He didn’t. He had seen the looks that people in town gave him when he finally went out to the grocery for the first time in months. They still blamed him. The death of so many good kids and out of all of them he was the one to survive? IT didn’t make sense. He didn’t have much of a future. Not like Lydia or Jackson did. He didn’t have the kind heart of Scott and he definitely didn’t have Alison’s intelligence. How could such a failure be the only one who made it out alive?

Stiles had heard the rumors. That he had some part in their deaths and his wounds weren’t as bad because they were self-inflicted. How he could inflict bites, gouges and scratches upon himself, Stiles wasn’t sure, but rational thought didn’t apply here. Not when so many kids had died.

He enrolled in a school a county over. Sure the kids had heard about what had happened but they didn’t know what he looked like. They didn’t know all that much. These kids, at Valley High, they only knew that he made it out alive and they knew it had to be hell from the scars he had left over and the way he flinched at the slightest sound or touch in the hallway between classes.

He sat in the desk with the quickest escape route. If the teachers shut the doors he couldn’t breathe. He didn’t make friends because what was the point? He didn’t talk much. Only when directly asked by teachers and that was a rarity in itself. Most kids thought him to be mute, lost and a bit crazy with the way he constantly searched out exit routes and shied from any more of touch.

Valley High was as good as it was going to get.
