Steve was ecstatic to have his best friend back—safe and sane, but there were days the other Avengers weren’t so sure. The Winter Soldier was the scariest guardian angel in the world. It wasn’t even that he did anything. Most of the time, he just stared at the other Avengers as if to let them know they had better not step out of line. And his reputation (and the memory of DC) was enough to keep them in line.

What they didn’t realize was Steve was just as scary when Bucky was the one threatened.

The entire team watched as the former Winter Soldier fell beneath the onslaught. For a moment the team was frozen, than Steve let out a strangled yell and began to tear through the still standing commandos. He didn’t throw his shield, but used it to push people aside and even knock a few of them out.

When the dust settled, the commandos were groaning on the ground and Steve had reached the area where Bucky had gone down. He was pulling the bodies off his friend and yelling for assistance.

“The Captain is obviously a mightier warrior when his friend is threatened,” Thor commented as he moved to help.

“Yeah,” Tony commented. “Maybe the Soldier’s not the scariest guardian angel. That was…”

Bucky was coming around as the others reached him and he stared up at them. “Didn’t you know Steve took out an entire Hydra base looking for me?” he asked.

Steve patted him on the back. “I did have some help once I freed the others,” he commented.

Clint rolled his eyes. “Okay we got it. You’re both overprotective. And scary.” He looked around. “And clearly have no self-control when the other is in trouble.”

Steve winced when he saw the destruction he’d wrought. “Sorry.”

Bucky patted him on the shoulder. “It’s okay. I would have done the same.”

“Scariest. Guardian. Angels. Ever,” Clint declared before he was dragged away.

Slight references to Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier. My beta hasn’t seen it yet and she didn’t quite call them spoilers, but figured I’d float a warning just in case.

She had been trained—manipulated—until she didn’t know which way was up and which was down. Joining SHIELD hadn’t necessarily meant she knew the right way to turn, but at least she had the knowledge that there were certain people that could back her up.

Still. She had no idea some days which side she was on. SHEILD claimed to be on the side of all that was right and good, but some of the things they asked her to do… Well she’d never shied from doing what had to be done.

She knew she had red in her ledger and she wanted to make amends for some of it. After Loki, after Hydra, she wasn’t sure all of it was hers to redeem. As she sat before the Senate committee, her hands folded calmly in front of her; she played the angel. It was what they all wanted and expected to see. But she allowed a bit of the devil to peek out, just enough to scare them.

She might not know whether she was angel or devil, but she could still get the job done.

Thank you! Yes. She was absolutely playing a role in the Senate scene. I need to see it a few more times before I really write something for it, but that seemed to fit this story.

It would be easier to explain, Duncan thinks, if he'd even known Methos before the Fall - but no, the other angel had been just one of many.

That's all changed now.

"You could be a real asset, you know," he says, not for the first time. "You could turn the tide." He likes to think Methos feels something for him, enough to maybe one day change his mind.

He's given up on the idea of killing him. If it were possible, it'd be one terrific fight to get there. And then, well... it's Methos.

Methos props himself up on his elbow and just looks at Duncan, for a long moment. "How many of my brothers have been killed so far this month?" he asks.

Duncan thinks. "Around a thousand?"

"And how many of yours?"

Duncan sighs. "19,508."

Methos tilts his head. "I believe you see where I'm going with this."

"Did you forget the part where I said you could turn the tide for us?" Duncan says.

"I'll grant you that it's remotely possible," Methos says, "but the fact is that, right now, my side holds most of the power, and your side holds most of the risk. Wouldn't you agree?"

Duncan sighs, again. "Obviously."

"All right then," Methos says, airily. "Same time next week?"

Methos likes to pretend he doesn't get it at all. Duncan chooses not to fall for that.

"We'll see," Duncan says.

Methos stands. Duncan can't avoid staring, even as he knows he should be angry with him, as Methos unfurls his brilliant white wings, and leaves Duncan, once again, to his rebellion.
