Hiya, everyone! I'm [livejournal.com profile] evil_little_dog, and I'll be your host this week for [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic. I hope you have a good time with the themes!

Today's theme is Mark Twain. Your prompts should include some reference to Twain, such as a title or a quote.

The rules remain the same:

  • No more than five prompts in a row

  • No more than three prompts in the same fandom

  • No spoilers in prompts

  • If your fill contains spoilers, please warn and leave plenty of space

  • Please format your prompts in the following manner:
    Fandom, Character+/Character, Prompt

Some examples to get the ball rolling:
Fullmetal Alchemist, Edward(+Any, /Winry), The rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated
Burn Notice, Michael+Any, A Mysterious Visit
Fullmetal Alchemist, Edward+Hohenheim, "When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years."

Leverage, Eliot/Quinn, Huck Finn was their favourite

Date: 2014-06-23 08:11 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] daria234.livejournal.com
Eliot and Quinn lay side by side, shoulders pressed up against each other in the tiny fishing boat. Quinn had called in his favor, and after a successful job in a small turbulent nation, they were fleeing the country by paying a local fisherman to row them down the river, as they lay flat to avoid being seen by anyone from shore.

They were on their backs, staring up at the night sky, clouds not quite covering the bright full moon. The smell of trees, thick with recent rain, surrounded them as they felt the gentle current of the river underneath the thin wood at their backs.

"Like Huck Finn on the raft," Quinn whispered to him with a smile.

"This ain't the Mississippi," Eliot whispered back.

"Don't tell me you never thought about what it would be like, to raft down the river, free of the arsehole grown-ups in your life. Especially since you're an American southern boy. That's halfway to Huck Finn anyway."

"I don't know about that," Eliot chuckled. "But yeah, every kid reads the book at school, thinks about running away."

Quinn looked back up at the sky, the stars. "My mother read the book to me."

Eliot turned. Childhood was spoken of in vague terms, at least by men like them. "Yeah?"

Quinn nodded, and was quiet.

"My dad had a copy of the book on the shelf," Eliot said then, a gentle volley back. "But I never asked if he read it. We didn't talk about things like that."

"Yeah," Quinn said, understanding.

They were both silent for a while.

"When I got older," Quinn said eventually, "I realized the book was about more than what I thought it was."

"I know what you mean," Eliot said. "It's about freedom. And about the ugliest side of human nature."

"And about how following orders isn't always the right thing to do."

"Yeah."

They were quiet again.

Quinn broke the silence again. "It's a nice night. Clear."

"Sure is."

Quinn nestled a little closer, leaned his head to rest on Eliot's shoulder. Eliot pulled closer too.

"Sir, are you all right?" John said. The man looked pale.

"I -- I -- that man. In the hat. He ran in, looked at me, said that I'm a degenerate gambler, a drunk, and a lecher who harbors sexual desires for my brother's wife."

"Oh. Sorry about that. He's like that with everyone," John said.

"That man's a lunatic," he said indignantly, "None of those things are true!"

John shrugged. "I'll give you that he's a lunatic."

"You've had this power but never even used it?" Erik said disapprovingly.

"I used a few times as a child. It got me sent to boarding school in another country, so I didn't make a habit of it. And of course, when I got older, I realized that forcibly putting my feelings and experiences in someone else's head is a terrible violation."

Erik sighed. "If you were willing to unleash your powers, Charles, you could rule the--"

"So are you willing to help me?"

Erik hesitated, then nodded. He knelt in front of Charles' chair and closed his eyes as Charles placed his fingers on Erik's cheek and forehead.

When it was done, Erik backed away. He looked up at Charles, eyes gaunt.

"Manipulative," Erik mumbled, no heat to it. He wiped a tear from his eyes and stood up to walk back to his own room.

--

The next morning, Charles and Hank made breakfast together as Erik slept in.

"How did you get Erik to stay?" Hank asked.

"I showed him how I felt about him," Charles said simply.

Hank looked skeptical, but Charles didn't explain further.

Hank went back to making the eggs. "Then I guess I'll make enough for three."

Charles just smiled.

Bruce sleeps in the tiny chair in the corner of the hospital room, waking up every half hour to work the kink out of his neck or shake the pins and needles out of his arm. When he wakes up in the morning he's almost more sore than when he spends the night chasing criminals and getting thrown off buildings.

"You look like shit," Harvey says and Bruce smiles before he even opens his eyes, sits up and rubs the sleep out of his eyes. Harvey's eyes are unfocused and glassy with dark circles around them, but he's -- he's Harvey.

"Well you don't look like a fresh picked daisy yourself," Bruce says and gets up to stand next to him, thinks better of it and just sits on the edge of Harvey's bed next to him. "How do you feel?"

"Head's foggy," Harvey says. "Didn't have 'em take my brain out and stuff it with cotton by any chance, did you?"

"Damn," Bruce smiles. "I knew I forgot something."

He reaches out for Harvey's hand, but Harvey pulls it back, runs it through his hair and sighs.

"Why do you keep doing this?" He asks. "I'm not a good person, Bruce. I don't want saving."

"I know," Bruce says. "That's why you need it the most."

Katekyo Hitman Reborn, Gokudera & or / any, If a person offend you, and you are in doubt as to whether it was intentional or not, do not resort to extreme measures; simply watch your chance and hit him with a brick. That will be sufficient. If you shall find that he had not intended any offense, come out frankly and confess yourself in the wrong when you struck him; acknowledge it like a man and say you didn’t mean to. Yes, always avoid violence; in this age of charity and kindliness, the time has gone by for such things. Leave dynamite to the low and unrefined.
