Tuesday: Time Travel
Jul. 1st, 2014 12:04 amHello, everyone. I’m
argentum_ls, pinch-hitting for the week, and today's theme is time travel. Prompts can be characters going back or forward in time, time itself changing directions, metaphors about time or traveling through it, or any other way you way to interpret the theme.
The rules still haven't changed:
No more than five prompts in a row.
No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
No spoilers in prompts.
If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space.
Prompts should be formatted as follows:
Fandom, Character+/Character, Prompt
Some examples to get the ball rolling...
+ Tomorrow People (2013) – Stephen/Cara – When Stephen rolled back time, he went back a little too far.
+ Highlander – Methos – Meeting his younger self wouldn't be so bad except for how many younger selves he was so happy to leave behind.
+ Teen Wolf – Scott/Stiles – The next time Sheriff asks them about time travel, they have to answer yes.
Not feeling any of today’s prompts? Visit the lonely prompt archive and brighten someone’s day. For more recent prompts to write, you can also use LJ’s advanced search options to limit keyword results to only comments in this community.

...
Methos at 1000 was enamored with mortals, with their mayfly lives.
Methos at 2000 was experimenting with death, learning all the ways there were to kill.
Methos at 3000 was relearning how to live, how to blend, how to rule from the shadows.
Methos at 4000 was traveling, seeing the far corners of the world that were yet unexplored.
Methos at 5000 was mastering technology, enthralled with what the internet would become.
Methos at 6000 –
“I remember this,” he tells the child, barely 500 and still so wild.
The child glares at him, grubby fingers around a sharpened rock. “We survive,” he tells the child gently. “We grow so much stronger. And we will always have another day.”
He speaks a language not yet created in the child’s world; but he will remember, and he will understand the words one day.
Methos at 500 was mad, angry at existence and helpless to do anything about it. Methos at 6000 is the most powerful person in the world.
“I will send you back,” he tells the child. “But know that one day you will be where I am – one day, we will have the stars at our command.”
The child’s fingers clench on the rock; Methos murmurs the incantation, sending him back to the fertile plain of their youth.
A very long time ago, Methos looked upon himself in fear and in wonder, and he did not understand for millennia. The Game had not yet been invented and Methos had thought himself alone, the only one to die and then live again.
He rises to his feet and strides to the window, looking out over his empire. He is a benevolent ruler; very few people even know they live by his will alone.
The Game is won.

But enough.

"Brucie," the woman says. Her name is Veronica, and Jason's been casually insinuating his way into her life for weeks, just to get dragged along to this party. She's good friends with Bruce Wayne (as much, she had prefaced, as anyone can be good friends with Bruce, considering his attention span), and currently, she's dragging Jason by the arm to where Bruce holds court over his empire of drunk rich people.
"This," Veronica tells Bruce, shoving Jason forward, "is the one I've been telling you about."
Bruce looks up at him, and Jason forgets to breathe. He looks –
Rested is one way of putting it. The young side of thirty-something, like he's never met a problem he couldn't throw money at.
Another, far more accurate way of putting it is that Bruce looks fucking beautiful. Eyes twinkling blue. Hair just the right side of tousled. Skin tanned and unscarred, arms muscled but not Batman built.
Bruce is fucking beautiful, and just for a moment, he's giving Jason his full attention.
He holds out his hand, offers Jason a blinding, billion-dollar smile and says, "Jacob, isn't it?"
Jason doesn't bother to correct him. He licks his lips and thinks close enough.

She knows him immediately, through scent and through sight, and she steps out onto the porch, closing the door behind her. “Walk with me,” she commands, both alpha and mother in the words. He falls in her beside her.
Her children are asleep upstairs, Laura and Derek and Cora, all curled together like puppies. Her husband is away on a business trip; her brother is away at school, almost done with his degree. Her mother is in the kitchen, washing the dishes by hand because it soothes her. Her sister is crooning a lullaby to her own daughter, her brother-in-law showering; her nephew is muttering at his schoolwork.
He is quiet beside her. He stinks of grief and blood. His eyes are bright blue by light of the moon. (oh, my boy, what has been done to you?)
“Tell me what you’ve come to tell me,” she says, stopping when they’re far enough from the house that young ears won’t wake to hear the horrors he brings with him.
He doesn’t look at her as he begins; by the time he’s done, he’s crying into her shoulder and still has yet to meet her gaze.
“You are so brave,” she whispers, arms tight around him. “I’m so proud of you.”
His sob catches in his throat and his fingers rip holes in her shirt, but she just holds him. She feels the magic as it builds around them, come to take him back, to the dark future, and she does not cling as it pulls him away.
She recognizes that spark.
“I love you,” she shouts to him as the magic flares and fades, leaving her alone in the moonlight.
.
In the morning, she brings her nephew and children to school; as she walks Cora to her classroom, she sees Claudia’s boy, chattering away at his father, and watches him for just a moment. He is bright in a way that would blind her if she looked too long; so much potential for one so young. What happened to him in the dark future?
She kisses Cora and reminds her that good little wolves keep their tempers, and then she goes to meet Claudia by the tree.
“I felt it,” Claudia says before Talia even opens her mouth. “Tell me everything.”
.
(When Claudia begins to get sick, Talia offers her a gift. Claudia accepts.
When Gerard Argent sabotages the peace, three emissaries stop him and he is executed.
When Kate Argent prowls around, she is put down and her head sent back to her brother and mother.
Chris Argent stays away from Beacon Hills. The tree is never cut down.
Claudia’s boy is taught to control his spark and Talia watches her children grow.)

"And the McCoys are both Mother Hens," chorused the grinning pair of Kirks, who really looked nothing alike.

Date: 2014-07-01 04:58 pm (UTC)"What, Clint?" Natasha asked wearily as she aligned the orange-colored gem just so.
"Besides that this thing is the second-cousin to the Tesseract." He eyed the thing askance.
"Brother probably."
"Could be a sister."
"No. It couldn't."
He shrugged and went on. "Time travel never works, okay? Whatever we've done in the past, we've already done it. We can't change anything."
"Our presence has been detected in the fairytale age, Barton. We're going."
"What is the fairytale age anyway?" He pulls on his arm guard and wishes for his mechanical quiver rather than the plain one, but orders were orders, and at least his weapon of choice wouldn't look out of place.
Natasha disappeared into the bathroom without answering and emerged looking like something out of a movie. "At least we'll know now if Robin Hood really was real."
"I am not pretending to be Robin."
"Whatever you say."
They grasped opposite ends of the time gem, twisted it between them, and disappeared in a flash of orange light.
