exit stage left

hi everyone,

i'm one of the mods here at comment_fic, but in light of recent questions and concerns, it's become clear to me that i just don't have the time to devote to this comm and maintain it the way it needs to be. the delicious archive is a mess, not having been updated since before i took over it seems, and i originally wanted to look into moving it somewhere else, but life happened as it tends to and that was one thing that fell through the cracks and i apologize for that.

so. here's what's going to happen. the current mod/maintainer team consists of [livejournal.com profile] cashay, [livejournal.com profile] enochia, [livejournal.com profile] evil_little_dog, [livejournal.com profile] simplyn2deep, [livejournal.com profile] theeverdream, and [livejournal.com profile] zelda_addict. it's up to them if one of them or all of them want to continue working as a mod/maintainer and take over my place as owner of the comm. i'm sure they'll need volunteers to help out with the transition and maybe become mods, so if you have any interest, let us know in the comments that you're willing to lend a hand. it would be much appreciated.

it's been fun. i've read a lot of great fics here and wrote a lot of fics here, but sadly, LJ seems to be a dying platform for fandom and this comm just doesn't seem to get the amount of traffic it used too. (i've seen posts with 2000+ comments. now we're lucky to break 100+). and that's to be expected. fandom is an evolving organism and things change. it's all good.

if there's no interest in keeping this comm going with the daily posts, then i'll keep the comm open because i don't want anyone to lose any fics they love/wrote, but there won't be anymore posts. feel free to fill older prompts though. the delicious archive most likely will stay the same as it is now, unless someone(s) just want to clean it up, even without the comm.

the floor is open for discussion.

thank you for the all words. i'm sorry i just don't have the time to give this comm because it is one of my favorites and i did a lot of my best work here.

I do hope the comm doesn't go away. It's a lovely respite and source of inspiration for me on days when there's nothing else small enough to hit the spot. The reliability has been wonderful. I have disappeared during hectic RL weeks, but I always come back.

[identity profile] simplyn2deep.livejournal.com 2014-08-11 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It sucks when RL gets in the way of what you enjoy doing. I know that all too well. You've done a good job with what you had time for.

I'm in a position that I have more time, so if none of the other mods have a problem, I wouldn't mind taking over as owner.

I have offered when the comm was open to a new owner before and I'll offer again, I'd be happy to take over if the mods don't want to.

I haven't participated by writing yet, because it's just too high-volume for me, and I can't keep up with the comments, but I did start reading through the comm from the beginning for fandoms that interest me. It's slow going, and I'd hate to see the comm go away. Commentfic is hard to write (at least for me) but it's a great way to take a break from real life for a few minutes.

Something I can do, if there is any interest, is put the delicious archive into a GDocs spreadsheet, which would be sortable by fandom. It would take time, clearly, and then more time to mine through the daily posts for unfilled prompts, but I'm not going anywhere, and spreadsheets are something I enjoy making. It might be easier for some people to find unfilled prompts. And the spreadsheet could coexist with the delicious archive, for that matter.

[personal profile] samueljames 2014-08-11 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds like a fantastic idea. I (and I think some others) tend to bookmark prompts that I may want to write for when I see them but browsing lonely prompts isn't the easiest thing to do.

There are cases where you start watching a show and are late to the fandom and in those cases it would be good to go back and find prompts related to your new fannish interest.

Am an Excel fan (not joking) and love that spreadsheets are easy to filter/sort. Since links to Google docs are so convenient to share, it'd be great to track the prompts.

I also really like the idea of going to something more user friendly and accessible option for archiving like GDocs which can be managed to be open to a few people for editing and everyone for viewing and is sortable (say by fandom or by filled/not filled, etc).

I don't know how reliable I'd be as a mod given my RL situation and sporadic bouts of issues but I'm more than willing to help create and maintain a prompts database.

ETA: I really don't want to see this community go away, I know traffic to all journal based platforms has been reduced in favor of other modes - but perhaps crossposting to something like tumblr or whatever is popular at the moment (sorry, I'm a clueless DW/LJ holdout).

It does look like a lot of people would like this to happen, so I'll get started on it this week. It'll take time to build it, but I'll be more than happy to maintain it with help.

It would be sad to see the comm die. I know I used to be a lot more active in here, but like you RL has been a pain as of late and my muse has fleeting to say the least.

oookay, whatever the community stays or goes (I hope it stays!) I'm interested in getting a new delicious account running to better organize prompts and fills. Would anybody be willing to help out with it? Since the old one is a total mess it'd be starting anew and would require massive work. Input on how to tag things for easier search also welcome!

[identity profile] matrixrefugee.livejournal.com 2014-08-11 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I just lost my job and have a lot of time on my hands (in between looking for a new job), so I'd be more than happy to help with a new Delicious account! I'm thinking we could tag things as "lonely" or "filled" and then the fandom name or author's choice

I'm still on and still wanting to co-mod. I propose possibly two owners, though, so if one of them can't do something, the other could slide in to take up the slack.

[personal profile] samueljames 2014-08-12 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't want to pick on you but I know you're an active mod.

Pinboard works in much the same way as Delicious but without the problems people had with delicious. I've said in a comment below that I'd be willing to pay the one off set up charge of $10 to open an account if there are people willing to update it. However I'm not a mod/maintainer so I've no right to be going ahead with something.

Is there any way that remaining mods could run a poll to see if members are okay with having a pinboard account or want to use Google docs etc? I love the idea of Google docs but I know they can slow down if lots of people are accessing them. It'd be great to be able to track the prompts.

I hope your RL issues resolve themselves positively for you. *hugs*

I really don't want this comm to die, as I've made more friends through here than any actual fandoms lately, and it is the one comm in which I love reading new and older posts.

I'm happy to help as a co-mod if needed, I can't offer any more than that because work and health are being bitches to me this year, but if I can help keep the comm alive I'm ready and willing.

[identity profile] gehayi.livejournal.com 2014-08-11 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope that the comm doesn't go away. I get a lot of good inspiration here, and it's one of the more active comms on my F-list. Not to mention that I've found some new fandoms through the fics here! I pray that it doesn't shut down.

[personal profile] samueljames 2014-08-11 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for your work on the comm. When I look at posts from 2009 & 2010 compared to now, it's rough to see so many deleted accounts and names that were once familiar.

Maybe the other mods can be co-owners so the responsibility doesn't fall to any one person?

Even I took a break from comment fic and all comms for close to a year but comment fic is the community I'm most active in. Sometimes it's a case of throw prompts and leave but I always look forward to the daily posts. I'm doing my masters at the moment and have loved the recent fills I've received as they offer an escape into the fictional lives I love.

I have started watching shows because I've seen people (who I have other fandoms in common with) prompt them and there are people whose prompts I always look out for. It's one of the best comms in terms of ooh I'd like to throw out this idea and see if I get a fill. As many others are structured around ships/fandoms/lengths etc this is one of the few that's relatively open which is great for a multi-fandom multi-shipper like me.

Even though I only write occasionally here, I still love the comm. If it's too much work to maintain daily posting, an idea could be to limit the posts to once weekly. That might also make it easier to maintain the delicious tags and perhaps get more comments on any given theme. Perhaps this could be put to a vote by means of a poll, if it's an option for the (hopefully) future comm maintainers.

I'm no good at owning/modding/running anything so I don't know what my opinion is worth but i LOVE this community, I love reading the prompts and the fills and writing when I can. And even if posts "only" get 100 replies I'd forever and always amen rather be here than tumblr.

[identity profile] rebak1tten.livejournal.com 2014-08-11 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Agree, love this comm, one of the only ones I still check on LJ!

[identity profile] likewinning.livejournal.com 2014-08-11 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for all that you've done! I hope this community doesn't go anywhere because even though I just joined in the past few months, it's helped me get back into writing for the first time in ages. LJ is a dying platform, true, but there's still not anywhere that's as easy to get comments and feedback on. I've met a lot of awesome people here and I'd be sorry to see it go. :(

[identity profile] lynne-monstr.livejournal.com 2014-08-12 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I love this comm and I'd be so upset if it went away. I tend to lurk more often than not but I always check the posts almost daily.

I'm available to help index prompts, on GDocs or Delicious (I don't know either system but I'm a fast learner). RL has been hectic lately but I can find time to chip away at it on weekends.

[identity profile] zelda-addict.livejournal.com 2014-08-12 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Clearly I am a horrible mod/maintainer because I read this and went, "I am?" XP

Anywho, I don't have excessive amounts of free time, but I'm totally willing to do some sifting through older threads to help with indexing filled and unfilled prompts. Just assign me one and I'll work my way through it. Eventually.

[identity profile] zippitgood.livejournal.com 2014-08-12 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you for all the work you've done. LJ/DW is a dying platform but it's still such a joy to see posts and prompts come up every day.

I hope the comm doesn't go anywhere and that it can continue on. It's a lovely place to get inspired when you're running low on creativity.

[identity profile] raktajinos.livejournal.com 2014-08-12 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
I would hate to see this comm go away and I can help out wherever you need me (like with managing the index tags and whatnot). I'm a writer so I'm like always on my computer. I also work with ao3 so..

Thank you for all you've done, and for picking up the comm the last time it was handed off. While I haven't been as active here as I once was--in truth, I've been in quite a writing funk in general--comment-fic is pretty much what keeps me on LJ at all. This is an awesome comm and I hope it continues on!

Best of luck to you as you change paths.

Quick Question

[personal profile] samueljames 2014-08-12 11:07 am (UTC)(link)
I like both the google docs suggestion and the idea of an updated delicious. However I know there were some issues with delicious when it was bought over and I myself moved to pinboard.

Does someone have the login details of the delicious account or might they be with a mod who is no longer active?

I'd be willing to pay the one-off $10 charge to get a pinboard account for this comm and share the log-in details with mods/volunteers. It allows for tagging and tag bundles.

I use one for tracking stuff to read and prompts I might write and another to bookmark awesome things I've read. Here's a sample of what it looks like for someone who doesn't know pinboard https://pinboard.in/u:scripps_lj

Re: Quick Question

[personal profile] falkner 2014-08-12 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
The tags of the current delicious archive are kind of a mess, I honestly think it'd be better to start with a clean account. I was actually planning of getting a pinboard account as soon as I could spare the ten bucks (would have been a while, though) and have started a new delicious account so everything could be exported later. Obliviously it's something that I wouldn't be able to accomplish alone.

Here's the account I set up. I did the first three days of 2014 as a test and with a Delicious Firefox add-on it only takes two click and a little typing to quickly add comments from the entry page itself so it's a fast enough process if you have some patience. A quick look at the add-on site shows that there's a similar one for pinboard, too.

Pleasepleasepleaseplease DON'T SHUTTER THIS COMM!

I only prompt/write when the spirit moves me (and when my day job doesn't get in the way), but I also save prompts from this comm for future use. Some of these prompts have turned into epic, crazy-long fics that never would've occurred to me otherwise.

In short: I need this place.

Fandom is changing but I don't think that 100+ comments per daily entry is something to discard. I also agree with other commenters here that the Delicious archive is confusing to navigate/manage and that the GDocs idea is a stellar one. I hope that the remaining mods take it under advisement.
