Hello, I'm benebu and this is my last day hosting. Today's theme is Dictionary Definition, meaning that your prompt must be the definition of a word given by any dictionary. (Here, have links to Oxford Dictionaries and the Merriam-Webster for example)

The rules still haven't changed:

There is one thing that Lydia Martin doesn’t do and prides herself on the fact of this. She doesn’t blush. For so many it is an uncontrollable weakness. A tell that isn’t worth all the trouble it brings. Her temperature may rise upon anger, she may grit her teeth with embarrassment but her cheeks never redden from either. No she’s strong, reserved but strong. No one has power over you if they can’t gauge your reactions or feelings.

It threw her off; the clench of her heart, the heat rising to her cheeks and the feeling of her entire body reacting without permission. It happened just after she was walked to her front door, guided inside and the locks on the side and back doors were checked, followed by the mountain ash lines at her windows. There hadn’t been that many people who showed they cared for her in this way. They cared about her safety and well-being knowing that they wouldn’t get anything in return. The only utterance from her lips would be a soft thank you and good night before she locked the front door behind him.

She stopped in the middle of turning the key in the lock. She opened the door to be greeted with a shy smile. “Did I forget something?”

Lydia’s thoughts fumbled and her mouth dropped open, unsure of what to tell him. The words slipped out without her permission and there was no taking them back. “Will you stay?”

Her heart beat heavily in her chest, echoing up into her throat as she waited for him to say something, anything.

“I’ll take the couch.” He pressed a hand to the small of her back and nudged her back inside. He locked the door and waited for whatever was to come next.

Phil lived his life, day in and out, in a state of fact. There was always something that was going to go wrong. There would always be more than enough paper work to last him to his dying days. The Avengers would come first over everything else, including his own life. Tony Stark would always be obnoxious. Bruce Banner would always be too quiet. Natasha always had a secret worth telling. Steve’s right eyebrow twitched every time he tried to cover for any of the Avengers. Thor told the best stories, even if he stretched them out to be ten times longer than they originally were. Lastly, Clint Barton would always make him stumble over his words, lose his train of thought and drive him crazy. These were some of the facts that ruled Phil’s life.

He never dabbled in hope. It wasn’t worth the heartache.

“Sir,” Barton greeted him with a slick grin as they passed each other in the hallway. Phil’s hands were full of files and Clint reached to pull half the load into his own hands. He turned in the direction Phil was headed and walked side-by-side with the agent. “Where are we headed?”

“Maureen’s office,” Phil answered as he tried not to focus on the warmth of Clint’s shoulder brushing against his as they walked.

“I bet you’re her favorite.” Clint teased and Phil ducked his head. “You always have everything in order and legibly written.”

“I get all of the coding on your requisitions right and in on time.” Phil helpfully pointed out with a shrug. “If only it was that easy to become everyone else’s favorite.”

Clint tilted his head, as if he were both curious and considering something. They were quiet the rest of the walk to Maureen’s office and as they handed the files over to her. They had made it back into Phil’s office and had the door closed when Clint reached out. His hand was warm on the collar of Phil’s shirt. He could feel the callouses on Clint’s fingers rub against the side of his neck. He could feel the heat of Clint’s body melting against his own. “You’ve always been my favorite.”

Then in a blink, Clint was gone. Phil took a deep breath and settled in behind his desk. Phil Coulson lived his life in a world of facts. When it came to Clint Barton he allowed himself hope.
