Fill - "Today" - MCU, Bucky Barnes, PG 1/2

People don't check the buses, not thoroughly. They're safe as he can manage, safer than the risk of suffering a blackout in a rented car, safer than clinging to a train in his compromised state, and infinitely safer than airport security. They aren't looking for him here.
He steps up to the counter after observing a dozen transactions to get the procedure right. He keeps his head down, mutters his destination, pays with cash he liberated from his handlers' stash.
Five minutes later, he looks down at the ticket, and strokes the edge of the stiff paper with his thumb. The unfamiliar normalcy of it is unexpectedly intense. He's going to go on a trip, a trip with a destination of his chosing.
Today, he's a traveler.
--
The three ladies ahead of him are old, slow, their purchases weighing them down as they chatter loudly amongst themselves. He clings to the small plastic bag containing a few necessities as he resists a habitual urge for maximum efficiency at the expense of everyone around him. (Push them aside, get into position, you need to complete your objective-.)
Objective. Yes, his objective to get dental hygiene supplies. Of course it's important to draw attention to himself to fulfill that objective.
The cool part of him full of procedures and rules and doctrine lapses into a sudden silence.
He darts around them and opens the door, holding it open so they can file out of the door... efficiently.
"What a nice young man, thank you," one says, her wrinkled face wreathed in smiles.
Today, he's a gentleman.
--
It's a rough place, but the only clinic he dares to go to. He's surrounded by people, all ill or injured, some that way by bad luck or poor choices, others by violence. Some here would happily contribute to the mayhem for a hint of advantage.
There was a time when he might have been tasked to kill those who gave them their orders. Now he was amongst them, a weakness and fever wracking his body. He doesn't get sick, not really, but the last of the drugs his handlers used on him have worked themselves out of his blood.
He's far from the only one here going through withdrawal.

Date: 2014-08-23 03:37 pm (UTC)"What, monkey?" Danny said, giving Grace a hug.
"We went swimming with sharks!"
Danny eyes widened, and he looked over at Steve, lips thinning.
Grace continued, "And then we went to the carnival!"
"Now that sounds like a good activity," Danny said pointedly.
"The carnival had bungee jumping!"
Danny almost choked.
Grace added, "And I wanted to bungee jump again but Uncle Steve said it would be more fun to go skydiving and Kamekona flew us up and I was strapped to Uncle Steve and we jumped out of the helicopter and parachuted down!!! It was so awesome, Danno! Can Uncle Steve baby-sit me next weekend too?"
Danny's face was red. He gritted out, "No. No, Uncle Steve is not ever allowed to baby-sit you again. Go start your homework now, sweetie. I need to talk to Uncle Steve."
Grace sighed and left, obviously wanting to talk more about her day.
"Stephen." Danny's voice was tense, barely controlled.
Steve shrugged. "All you said was, don't let her have too much sugar."
"If you ever - EVER - jump out of a helicopter with my daughter again, I'm going to hurt you in a very permanent way."
Steve just grinned. "Sure thing, Danno."

Date: 2015-01-27 08:02 pm (UTC)“I thought we had settled the matter of these pretenders,” a young but scornful voice said. Terry fought a groan, trying to wake himself up. Was he dreaming or concussed? His head hurt. He was totally slagged. “That there was no longer a question about the one to wear the cowl.”
“And that is you, right, Robin?”
“Tt. Of course. You are hardly fit for the role.”
In spite of the laughter above him, Terry's eyes focused on the sword in front of his face. Curare was here? No, wait, it wasn't her. She wore white and this sword was held by someone in red, green, yellow—Robin. That didn't make any sense. Robin was gone. Tim Drake had retired years ago. Nightwing, too.
“This one's skills are sloppy. The other pretenders were more convincing in their act.”
“Act?” Terry croaked out. “What...?”
“Why don't we start with a name? And don't say Batman. It's not funny, not around here.”
Terry reached up to his head, wanting to stop the ache. He stared past the kid in the Robin costume. Okay, the suit was old, but it was familiar. He'd stared at it enough in the cave to recognize it. “Mr. Wayne? Bruce?”
Batman and Robin exchanged a look, and something hit Terry in the head before he could stop it.
“This is an unacceptable risk. He should never have been brought here.”
“Your opinion has been noted. Now be quiet or you can help polish the silver.”
“Tt. Such an action is beneath me.”
“Robin,” ground out a voice that was closer to Wayne's, to the one Terry was used to having in his ear. He was almost tempted to talk to it again, but he didn't want to get hit in the head. Again. He was so slagged. “Upstairs. Now.”
The words the kid used weren't in any language Terry knew. He started to sit up, and that was when he realized it. “You took my mask off.”
“I had questions,” Batman said, moving around the cot. “There have been a few too many faces under the cowl lately, and some of them were a little too homicidal for my liking. I needed to see who I was dealing with—what I was dealing with.”
Terry tried to sit up. “Which is?”
“You appear to be from the future, judging from your suit and your face. I'm going to laugh for weeks if one of my half-baked theories turns out to be true, but I'm waiting for the tests to come back right now. Let's talk.”
Terry frowned. “You... seem friendlier than I would have expected Batman to be. And you don't sound like Batman.”
Batman grinned, hopping up onto the cot across from him. “I can sound like him when I want to, but I'm enjoying watching it unsettle you that I don't. Your reaction is interesting. Might be a sign of things to come, might be something that I'll get to laugh about when it's not giving me nightmares, or maybe it's a bit of hope. Hard to say.”
“You know I can't tell you about your future. You'd be lecturing me on paradoxes or something.”
“Not really my style, though I suppose I've been doing it more lately.”
“You're not seriously that nice with your Robins. You're a total dreg to me.”
Batman smiled. “You're not Robin. You're Batman. Takes a lot to put on the cowl, believe me. You need the lectures. It's a whole other world being Batman.”
Terry grabbed hold of the cot. “Who are you?”
Something beeped, and Batman jumped off the cot, going over to the computer. That was familiar. Almost. The setup was close to what Wayne had back in the batcave, but Terry knew that wasn't Wayne. It couldn't be. The guy sounded... happy. Wayne wasn't happy. Grumpy, temperamental, demanding, harsh, occasionally funny in a sarcastic way, but not happy.
Batman spun the chair around and faced Terry. “Do you go by Wayne or is there another name I should know?”
Talk about a sore subject. “You know, just because I put on the suit doesn't make me Bruce Wayne.”
“I know that better than most,” Batman said. “You can deny it if you want, but the DNA says you're his son. You should know you have more than a few issues, not the least of which is your half-brother. You want to start with a name?”
“I'm not his son.”
Batman laughed. “Yeah, that sounds familiar, too. I guess we wait.”
“For what? I'm not telling you anything.”
“For cookies.”
