[identity profile] evil-little-dog.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] comment_fic
A good Thursday to you! I'm [livejournal.com profile] evil_little_dog, bringing in today's prompt.

Today's theme is Monsters! Whether or not your fandom has the scariest movie creatures, as of today, it does. But remember, sometimes the scariest monsters look just like you or me.

The rules remain the same:

  • No more than five prompts in a row

  • No more than three prompts in the same fandom

  • No spoilers in prompts

  • If your fill contains spoilers, please warn and leave plenty of space

  • Please format your prompts in the following manner:
    Fandom, Character+/Character, Prompt

Some examples to get the ball rolling:

Fullmetal Alchemist, Kimblee+/Winry, He told Edward he's not a pedophile; he's actually much more dangerous.
MCU, Tony+Any, 'The scariest monster is the one across from you in a board meeting'
BtVS, Buffy/Angelus, Bringing the monster to heel
Fullmetal Alchemist, Roy, He'd prefer the title, 'Monster of Ishval'

Not feeling any of today's prompts? Visit the lonely prompt archive and brighten someone's day. For more recent prompts to write, you can also use LJ's advanced search option to limit keyword results to only comments in this community.

“FREY!” When Ventuswill spoke in That Voice, she was not looking for a social call.

“Yes, Venti?” The young princess ran into the dragon’s chamber, sweaty and speckled with pumpkin shell.

“Explain!” The dragon commanded.

“I’m so sorry, Venti,” Frey apologized. “I don’t know what happened with those pumpkin seeds. I found them in a dungeon…”

“You didn’t know that those seeds were for VAMPIRE PUMPKINS?!” Ventuswill was cross. “All of Selphia is terrified! Those fanged gourds are chasing everything, scaring livestock…”

“Oh but they’re not a danger to anybody!” Frey tried to explain.

“No?” Ventuswill was skeptical. “Sharp-toothed chompy veggies are no danger?”

“Well, we figured out,” Frey elaborated, “when Porco threw a tomato at them to drive them back, they ate it up. They’re vegetarian—they only like tomatoes!”

“Oh?” Ventuswill’s anger cooled.

“They’re only a threat to everyone’s tomato patches, and ketchup supplies, but they won’t bite people, I promise.”

“Well, still,” Ventuswill flapped her massive wings in relief, “Perhaps we should lead them into the forest, away from town, maybe plant a tomato patch of their own?”

“Yes, Venti,” Frey nodded, “Although Porco seemed really excited about Vampire Pumpkin Pie.”

“Oh dear.”

(Talk of violence/brainwashing; a mishmash of various backgrounds, but mainly movieverse)

...

Bucky and Natasha have spent years trying to atone for what they consider their crimes. Clint thinks it's bullshit, but he'll never tell them that.

See, the thing of it is, the Winter Soldier was a gun and the gun is never at fault for what the hand aiming it does. And Clint will put an arrow in the eye of anyone trying to blame Bucky, and he has.

And Natasha -- she didn't know right from wrong 'til way after she left the Red Room, and she wasn’t much more than a gun, then, either. Lots of people think ignorance of the law is no excuse, but that’s utter horseshit, and he’ll fight anyone who tries to hold her accountable, and he has.

Clint’s on the far side of 50 now. He’s getting to be an old man. Natasha’s barely aged half a decade since they met, and Bucky not at all. They’re both older than him by a lot but he’ll die long before they start showing it. And he’ll probably die badly, too. He’s been expecting that since Barney left him dying on the ground.

Bucky and Natasha think there’s a monster inside them, a monster who had control for years. And they have to make up for what the monster did, the people dead by their hands, the red still dripping down their ledger.

Sometimes, Bucky still shies away from Clint’s hands. Sometimes, Natasha turns her face away when he goes in to kiss her. They don’t think they’re good enough. They think they should be hurt.

For as old as they are, they’re still so young. Clint’s going to die before they figure out what he learned, laid up in a hospital bed, barely alive.

Surviving is not a crime. Escaping is not a crime. Choosing to live is not a crime.

Neither of them are monsters. Neither of them owes the world anything.

It makes me want to slaughter something, Steve confessed to him once, while Natasha and Bucky were curled up together, both looking so damned young and scared.

Take care of them for me, Cap, Clint had requested that night.

Steve Rogers thinks it’s bullshit and horseshit and every other kind of shit, and he’ll be around long after Clint’s bones have turned to dust. He’s loved Bucky for the better part of a hundred years, even if some of it was lost in the ice, and he thinks Natasha is amazing. They’ll be in good hands after he’s gone.

Bucky and Natasha aren’t the monsters. Clint’s known that from the moment he brought Natasha in rather than killing her from a mile away, from the moment he looked at Bucky trying to hide behind Steve. They’re just kids who never got a chance.

But Clint… he spent ten years being a damned good assassin, knowing full well the whole time what he was doing. And he hasn’t once thought about atoning.

But he doesn’t try to explain because they’ll refuse to understand. All he can do is love them and protect them and hope they’ll let Steve in after he’s gone.

Matt Bennison is weird. That's what his roommate Kyle says, anyway, when he joins their study group. Elise and Monty want to hear more, but Matt arrives (late, of course, because he's never on time ever) with notes from his meeting with Dr. Oliver, and so Yvette shushes them all because Matt is so soft spoken.

Kyle, Elise, and Monty go out for drinks after the studying is done. Elise thinks Matt's quietness is a mask for something wild and dangerous (but she also thinks her roommate is Kali reincarnated, and everyone [including the roommate] is pretty sure that's not true), and Monty doesn't like that Matt sometimes makes proclamations about something without being able to back it up.

Matt’s a good guy, though, everyone knows that. Just… weird. Kyle tells them about Matt talking in a dozen different languages in his sleep, the sword he hides in the back of the closet, the notebooks full of scribbles in a language no one in the language department could identify, and how terrifying Matt was when Kyle returned with pictures of those notebooks.

But the thing Kyle doesn’t tell them, the thing he knows would convince them because nothing else has – Matt never looks in the mirror. Never. In the five months they’ve been rooming together in the dorms, Matt has avoided the mirror.

Who does that? What does it mean? Google and the psychology department weren’t much help beyond it being a “bad sign,” which, no shit, he already knew that.

And sometimes, late at night, Matt cries. He’s an orphan and an only child, so Kyle doesn’t talk about his own family in case that’s insensitive, and Matt doesn’t have any pictures of any loved ones or friends. He came alone and he’s still mostly alone, and Kyle – Kyle doesn’t want to be his friend. Because Matt… he’s just so cold sometimes. Like he thinks it’s all pointless, like he thinks they’re all nothing, and this is just – Kyle doesn’t even know, but he doesn’t like Matt.

And by Matt never looking in the mirror… Kyle’s pretty sure Matt doesn’t like Matt, either.

Avengers movieverse, Hydra higher-ups, the words they’ve been scared of for decades: the asset’s rogue

Modern Day Frankenstein

Date: 2014-08-29 09:56 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ebbeebbe.livejournal.com
“The asset’s rogue.” Krueger spoke. He stood straight ahead, looking at the three figures seated in front of him. They were still as statues, nested like dark birds on a long marble slab of a desk. They didn't speak, as if they were waiting for more information from him. But at this moment he was completely at a loss.

“I have, uh.” He cleared his throat. “I have agents in the field tracking his last known movements. I’m confident that they will apprehend him and we will once again be in control of the asset, from which point we will induce a cryogen-."

“Frankenstein.” Her voice cut his word off like a knife.

“Forgive me, Reichsleiter Strauss, I do not understand.” He said crossing his hands gently in front of him. He looked in her direction, her blue piercing through him, her face tight and steady.

“Frankenstein, do you know it?” she asked.

“Yes, of course, but I still am unaware as to what you are referring to.”

“Frankenstein, he was a monster. An abomination created with the purpose of helping humankind.” She said plunging the room into stark silence. “Which is a lie. Arrogance, the need to feel like God. Power over death, over time, it’s what fuels the creation of the monster…and one day Frankenstein is abandoned, left alone to his own devices and you know what he does?” she asked. Krueger didn't move, unsure if he should answer. “The worst thing a monster ever could do, what do you think this is?”

“Murder. He commits murder.” Krueger said, confident in his answer.

“No, Krueger.” She said shaking her blond bob gently. “He starts to think he is human.” She laughed. “Yes, human. Can you believe this? He starts to speak and read and feel. A monster, without a master, who begins to think he is human. This is the worst. Because soon he will listen to no master, he will fear no master and he will start to…remember, and plot and avenge.” The last word eking from her with heavy disdain. All of them understanding its significance. “James Buchanan Barnes is a monster, a modern day Frankenstein. You will find him and you will put him down where he stands.”

“But-“

“Put. Him. Down. Because if there is anything worse than a monster that becomes human…It’s one who becomes a hero.”

Leverage, Eliot/Hardison or Eliot/Parker/Hardison, the past is a monster biding its time

Date: 2015-03-27 02:33 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] daria234.livejournal.com
Eliot knows the day will come. When his past comes out of the dark gray waters and tries to swallow him whole.

Probably he deserves it. But he's not alone, and he won't let what's coming hurt them. Not for anything.

So he plans. And plans some more. Just in case.

He doesn't kill any more, but he knows that push come to shove, he'll make an exception.

And he never says anything to them, he makes sure they do their good work and live a good life. He makes sure they're safe, that they occasionally eat something other than potato chips and soda, and he does his best to make sure they're happy (as happy as people like them can be, anyway). But always, in the back of his mind, he's thinking through one contingency after another, keeping track of how many times he's re-checked security, thinking about what he could use as a weapon if he really, really had to.

There is nothing he wouldn't do to protect them from his past.

--

"Eliot doesn't like it when we're nosy."

"Eliot just wants to keep us safe."

"I like being safe. But I think I might like being nosy better," Parker said, and Hardison grinned.

"I am so with you, mama. But we're not in any danger. They can't trace my hack."

She nodded. "Who are we taking care of today?"

"Brock Jeffries. Mercenary who helped recruit child soldiers. Eliot got him thrown in prison for 14 years. What should he go back for?"

"Hm. Stealing."

"Classic. Let's have him 'steal' from the warlord he works for."

"I'll use the mini-drone to burn up some of his cash, and you'll make it look like it showed up in his bank account."

"It is so hot the way you think."

"I know."

"Can't I just –" Jason starts.

"No."

"Not even this one –"

"No."

"How about just a little –"

"Define how you kill someone just a little, Jason." Steve has his arms crossed in front of him, and he looks annoyed, but also kind of amused. In an exasperated way. Jason's been known to have that effect on people. He's particularly fond of that effect on Steve, he's found – he gets all pink-faced and flustered like he wants to break at least one code of honor and strangle Jason a little. It's always fun to make the noble ones squirm.

"Well," Jason says. He's still got the bad guy by the throat and a knife pointed to the guy's jugular. No pressure there yet – Jason knows exactly how much pressure to exert to kill someone, but he hasn't yet. "This one time, the Joker beat me to death with a crowbar and then blew me up. But I came back. So I only died a little."

Jason has an eye on the guy he's actively not killing, but he glances over at Steve to see him look properly horrified. He opens his mouth, shuts it again. Beside him, Bucky says, "I mean, he's not wrong," and Steve turns to glare at him like he means don't encourage him. But if Jason remembers correctly, of the three of them Bucky's the last person that killed someone, so…

Steve sighs. It's a very why-do-I-know-you-people sigh. A very needs-to-badly-get-laid kind of sigh. Jason would be pretty happy to oblige, if they weren't on a job. Which, again – would be over and done with if Steve just let him kill this guy.

"Just," Steve says. "Back to SHIELD. Okay? Natasha's going to talk with this guy."

"Yeah," Jason says. "Because she won't kill anybody. One time I saw her kill someone with –"

"Jason," Steve says.

Over coms, Barton pipes up, "He's got a point. There was that time when –"

"Barton," Steve warns, and then, "Jay," again, a little bit softer this time. It's that voice that got Jason to stop fighting the mess of SHIELD agents that ambushed him his first time in DC, the voice that manages, sometimes, to drown out the rest of the noise he hears all the time.

"All right, all right." Jason drops the guy, and he slumps to the ground like not being killed is the most exhausting thing there is. Jason kicks him a little, just in case he gets any ideas about freedom or whatever.

Steve says, "Thank you," and Jason flips him off in the nicest way possible, and Bucky sort of rolls his eyes at both of them and bends down to restrain the bad guy.

"You know," Steve tells Jason later, when they're sitting alone at headquarters while Bucky debriefs with Fury. He's still wearing the suit, and the shield is at his feet. "You can't just use that same excuse every time and get away with it."

Jason smirks. He pats Steve on the leg, casual with a promise of something else. "Please. Guilt tripping people about dying never gets old."

"Jason," Steve starts again, but Jason yawns, slouches back in his chair. "Lecture me later, man. I'm too tired from all the not-killing."

tigriswolf: (i'm following him)
From: [personal profile] tigriswolf

(I... have no idea if this makes sense outside of my head.)

Deep down, in the quiet place that screams at night when he can't sleep, Steve knows. He knew when he was little, before the serum gave him power; he knew in Europe, when Hydra was all he thought about, making them stop and then burning them down. He knew when he woke up and Fury's people gave him history lessons and trusted that he wouldn't be able to figure out enough to find information on his own. He knew after Loki and the invasion; he knew when he signed up with SHIELD in place of the SSR.

He knows when the mask falls off of Fury's killer. He knows when he wakes up in the hospital.

Steve knows he can't trust anyone but himself -- and Bucky.

Bucky, who might or might not be a lost cause, depending on who you ask.

Steve's not asking anybody. The world gave up on Bucky once before; Steve gave up when he delivered Zola instead of going back. That is a mistake he will never make again and it doesn't matter who gets in the way.

Nothing matters but finding Bucky, making sure he's okay, protecting him, helping him...

Steve knows what he’s capable of, both physically and mentally. He was a clever little shit before the serum and the serum improved everything. No, he’s not as smart as Tony Stark, or as savvy as Natasha – but he doesn’t need to be. And Bucky…

Bucky.

God, he just wants to tear things apart, burn everything down, make someone pay.

Steve wasn’t the idea guy, not always; neither was Bucky. They were partners, not the brains and the brawn or whatever stupid shit the history books say. Yeah, Steve started the fights and Bucky finished them, and yeah, Bucky was popular and charming and could’ve been friends with anybody.

The Winter Soldier and the Hulk show Steve how things might have gone. No wonder Dr. Banner doesn’t like being around him. And Bucky – is he even aware enough right now to get it?

Doesn’t matter.

Steve can only trust himself to know what’s right. And whether anybody else agrees… he doesn’t give a shit.

The history books have him down as a clean-cut, all-American hero. He slept for 70 years – if he’d been around for all the shit that came after the war’s end, would they still say that?

“Are you prepared for what you might find?” Natasha and Fury and Stark and even Sam ask.

He wants to laugh. He’s prepared to do whatever it takes to keep Bucky safe and free.

The thing is – the world isn’t ready for what that might mean.
