What happened? Clint tries to say, but his mind is working slowly and all he manages is a mumbled, “Wha’…”
He rolls on his side, trying to decide which way he wants to attempt to get on his feet. Natasha decides for him and pries him off the ground. Clint moves his legs as best as he can to help her. His head spins, and he leans heavily, but he is mobile enough with Natasha to lead him.
She presses one of her tiny guns into his hand, holds it there until he recognizes the feel of a weapon and grasps it. “Some men are coming to kill us,” she says. “We’re gonna kill them first.”
Couldn’t take them all yourself, Nat? he wants to tease, but his mouth still feels woolly and disconnected from his mind. “Heh,” he says instead. Her weight shifts beneath him playfully, a silent laughter of her own. They hobble out of the smoke and into the sunlight.

Date: 2014-09-02 10:36 pm (UTC)Some days he's all sharp teeth and cracked knuckles, roughing you up like he wants to get his hands up inside you, turn you inside out until you're something else completely, just another thing to be toyed with and manipulated. It's these days you feel most like yourself.
Other days he's bright blue eyes and smirks tugging at the corner of his mouth, stealing the cigarette from between your lips, hands on your hips like he wants to take you home. And when he does it's slow, heated, steams up the windows, and he makes you a sandwich after, smiles even. It's new, uncharted territory and you don't deserve it.
After a while, his moods become easier to predict. You can tell by the way he enters a room if it's going to end in bloody lips or sharing a cigarette and laughter. He starts reading you better too, because on the days some asshole rapist gets away or on the dark days you can't get the taste of dirt and stale, suffocating air out of your mouth, Bucky is there to take you apart, rebuild you into something that can half-function again.
"Thanks," he says, breathless, and collapses next to you after a particularly violent meeting. You glance over at him and he's covered in streaks of red, patchy reddish-purple bite marks, bottom lip split open and you realize you're a fucking idiot.
This has never been about you.

When Jefferson first met the Dark One, he was apprehensive, of course. The most powerful creature of darkness in all the lands, summoning Jefferson for a contract?
To be utterly honestly, Jefferson was a little disappointed to meet the Dark One. Rumplestiltskin was dangerous, yes, but easy enough to deal with – even when making deals.
“There is more to you than meets the eye, portal jumping thief,” Rumplestiltskin mused once.
Jefferson had laughed.

Rumplestiltskin arranged for the heartbreak of the young, magic-learning queen. Jefferson played his part dutifully because the pay was good.
Not long after, he heard that the young queen had become a terrifying force of darkness, and he smiled.

“Do you know what you’re doing?” his mother asks from the other side of the mirror.
“Exactly what you wanted me to,” he says, smirking at her.
She shakes her head. “I have everything under control. Cease this madness at once.”
He laughs, loud and long, and turns away from the mirror. “Should have thought of that years ago.”

Jefferson has a daughter. No one ever met her mother. He moved into the cottage with an infant and told everyone the mother had died suddenly.
She died, but it wasn’t sudden. It was the price she paid for the deal.

When the queen traps him in Wonderland, Jefferson knows it is his punishment. He’d always known it was coming.
When the queen cuts off his head and orders him to make a portal, he knows that is his punishment, too.

“You can end this,” his mother says from the other side of the mirror. “You know that you can.”
The hatter is mad. The portal jumper is broken.
It is his mother’s son who raises his head and bares his teeth and turns away.

In Storybrooke, he sleeps for years. His mind was never at rest in Wonderland. But in Storybrooke, there is nothing to do but rest and study.
There is no ambient magic in Storybrooke, only that which resides in skin and blood. His third and final punishment is that he remembers when no one else does, not the queen or the imp. Only the mad, portal jumping hatter.
He knows his mother. This is not only his punishment.

The miller’s daughter is named Regina. Her mother’s plan is to ensure her name comes true.
What only the mother knows is that she carried twin children to term and bore them both unto the world on a night of no moon.

The Curse breaks. Everyone remembers. Magic fills the air.

“You arrogant child,” his mother hisses from the mirror.
He spins the hat and smiles.

“Jefferson,” Regina says, before her heart breaks, before she is queen, before she is anything but a miller’s daughter. “I cannot trust my mother.”
“No,” he agrees, “you can’t.”

Jefferson is an orphan who raises himself after escaping the orphanage. He begins as a pickpocket and graduates to magic with ease. He dreams of his mother; none of the dreams come true. His mother is a monster who watches him from mirrors, when she chooses to. He can never contact her first.
He knows he has a sister. She is kind-hearted. Soft. It’d break her to know her brother was cast out to find his own way at barely a day old.
He chooses the name Jefferson because it sounds strong and the name on his blanket is foolish.

The miller’s daughter is named Regina and she does, indeed, become queen.
The miller’s son is named Rex and nobody even knows he exists.

The mad portal-jumping hatter watches a ship draw close to shore.
His mother’s plans were always so intricate, webs of lies woven together until nothing at all was clear. Rumplestiltskin and Regina’s plots weren’t quite as cluttered, but all of three meshed quite nicely together.
The funniest bit of all is that each of them needed a portal.
Rex wasn’t born with Regina’s aptitude for magic but he did have a small talent of his own, and, honestly... a hat is a hat is a hat.
The Queen of Hearts has come to Storybrooke. The Dark One and the Evil Queen are already present.
The board is set.

Bobby stopped, sat up. "You were always a dick. Now you just made it official." He grinned, then pulled a little on the short hairs below John's belly button.
"You know I hate that," John grunted.
"I know you love it," Bobby countered, then leaned down to kiss him.
"Whatever, you just," John mumbled, but as Bobby moved his lips to John's neck, he forgot the rest of his, assuredly genius, comeback.

“And now,” Jason says after Jimmy leaves the bathroom with his hair dripping wet, towel on his shoulders, wearing an old pair of sweatpants, “now we move into Phase Two.” He’s grinning, practically bouncing in place.
Phase Two is possibly more dangerous than Phase One, and a bit more complex. It will take longer and require far more interaction than Jimmy is perhaps comfortable with – but it’s also exciting.
“There’s at least two empires we can take over,” Jason says, pulling out his notebook with all their intel jotted down in shorthand. “And we can consolidate two more into one, if we can convince the new boss it’s in his best interest.”
“We can,” Jimmy says and Jason laughs, flipping to the last page in the notebook.
“We should put off catching the old man’s attention for as long as possible,” Jason mutters, hunching over the notebook and making notes.
Jimmy goes to his bag, where his clothes still reside. He hasn’t put anything in the dresser or closest, though Jason has arranged all his own belongings neatly, everything in its own place. But Jimmy likes keeping all of his things in one place, together; having things at all is still novel. He grabs one of the colorful shirts he acquired from a secondhand store and pulls it on, replacing the towel to keep the shirt dry.
“Okay, so,” Jason says, “let’s go over this again, make sure there aren’t any wrinkles.”
“Yes,” Jimmy agrees, sitting on the edge of the bed and waiting.
Phase Two is where Jason takes over Gotham’s criminal enterprises. Jimmy has nothing better to do, and this is Jason’s mission, the second half of it. Gotham is his, the way Brooklyn was once Bucky Barnes’. He was born on Gotham’s streets and the people themselves need his protection. The best way to keep them safe is to eliminated the criminals entirely, but that is impossible. Should all the criminals die or be removed, more will simply take their place.
So instead, Jason will ensure the crime is controlled. It will be difficult, far harder than the asset’s missions –
But that is no matter. Jason needs his help.
They spend all morning discussing the plan and decide to enact it in three days, when a new shipment comes in for what’s left of the mob. Jason, in his Red Hood guide, will be the spokesperson and Jimmy will loom in a mask of his own that is not the Winter Soldier’s muzzle, as the Red Hood’s bodyguard. The three days gives them time to fabricate or procure something suitable.
“We’re fuckin’ doin’ this!” Jason crows. “The Joker’s dead! Fuck, I haven’t been this happy since I died, Jimmy!”
His smile is bright and wide and Jimmy can’t help smiling back.

As they pull away from the Pennsylvania welcome center, Jimmy says, “Before I was Hydra’s, I was James Buchanan Barnes.”
Jason says, “What.”

Of course he knows who that was. Before Batman, Captain America was every Gotham kid’s hero, especially the ones on the streets. And Bucky Barnes, he was Captain America’s sidekick. He was a kid like them, like Robin.
Then, when kids grew up, they realized Bucky Barnes wasn’t Cap’s kid sidekick; he was Cap’s brother. And he was still just as awesome.
Hydra took Captain America’s brother and turned him into the scariest weapon Jason’s ever seen.
… it explains Captain America’s rampage, though.

“You have told me your story,” Jimmy says. It sounds like there’s glass in his throat. “I… I should tell you mine. Make us even.”
“Jimmy,” Jason says after a moment. “Jimmy, I took out the recalibration site in Monroe, remember? Everything after they got you, I already know most of it. All that was missing was whoever you were before, and you just told me that. We’re more than even, dude.”
Jimmy’s hands are tight on the wheel; it creaks beneath the metal before Jimmy loosens his grip. “Are you sure?”
“Yes.” Jason wishes he had the words for comfort, but that was also Dick’s thing.
He can’t stand the silence. “Do you know about Sherlock Holmes?” he asks.
Jimmy shakes his head.
“Okay, well, Alfred’s a bit of a fanboy so I can tell you all about it,” Jason says cheerfully, and does all the way through Pennsylvania.

Fucking Bucky Barnes, man. He’s a bona fide American hero.
Jason’d wondered about Jimmy’s life before Hydra; of course he had. But not that much. He had Jimmy and that was more than enough. And knowing about Bucky doesn’t change anything, not really.
Jimmy seems a little more at peace, though. That’s good.
Bucky Barnes died on a mission in the Alps. That’s all history knows about it. Jason missed out on a lot of school, and it’s not like the League cared that much about American history. But Captain America and Sergeant Barnes -- he and the boys used to play at being Howling Commandos when they weren’t Batman and criminals.
Bucky Barnes died on a mission in the Alps in 1944. That’s 70 years in Hydra’s control and it makes Jason want to set things on fire.
But Jimmy’s out. Jimmy’s out and he’s free and they wiped Hydra off the map in the USA while Cap’s off tearing his way through Europe and Asia. He’ll have to be satisfied with that. Jimmy is.

They stop in Allentown. “Gotham tomorrow,” Jimmy says. “You ready?”
Jason nods firmly. “I am.”
