Jueves: Parents
Apr. 30th, 2015 01:25 amThursday already! Well, at least in my time zone. I have a pretty busy day ahead so you get this earlier than usual. Today's theme is about parents, which means that prompts should be about mothers, fathers, and also people who are parental figures.
Just a few rules:
No more than five prompts in a row.
No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
Use the character's full names and fandom's full name for ease adding to the Lonely Prompts spreadsheet.
If your prompt or fill contains anything that can be a trigger for the reader, please add a warning for that to give the reader the chance to decide if they want to read or not.
No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing. Use the spoiler cut option found here.
If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the above mentioned spoiler cut.
Prompts should be formatted as follows: [Use the character's full names and fandom's full name]
Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt
Some examples to get the ball rolling...
+ Gone With The Wind. Wade Hamilton (or Ella Kennedy). Looking back, their mother wasn't so bad.
+ any. any. "We are expecting!" "Expecting... what?"
+ Veronica Mars. Keith Mars. Watching his little girl grow up too fast.
We are now using AO3 to bookmark filled prompts. If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3 please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2015 collection. See further notes on this new option here.
Not feeling any of today’s prompts? Check out the just created Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet. For more recent prompts to write, you can also use LJ’s advanced search options to limit keyword results to only comments in this community.
While the Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet and LJ's advanced search options are available, bookmarking the links of prompts you like might work better for searching for in the future.

Date: 2015-04-30 09:47 pm (UTC)Rachel hated when it was Danny's weekend but refused social gatherings on Grace's behalf when they conflicted. (It wasn't as if Rachel would see her daughter either at such events, plus Grace would be bored silly and none of the children were worth networking with at that age.)
When Danny was in a bad mental place after a case, he'd warn her. Rachel would make up an excuse and the weekend would be postponed. (Grace was Danny's best therapy, but it wasn't fair or good for Grace.)
When Stan suggested a weekend getaway, Rachel sent Grace over to Danny's for an extra weekend. (It made planning child care so much easier.)
At Grace's parent-teacher appointments, they sat side by side and didn't snipe at each other. (Several teachers were convinced that they were still married, they were so united when the cause was their daughter.)

Date: 2015-04-30 06:51 am (UTC)Fill: Daredevil (TV), Matt Murdock + Foggy Nelson 1/2
Date: 2015-04-30 03:37 pm (UTC)And then he realizes the old bastard had probably sprung fully grown out of his mother's head, and had arrived on this earth kicking and beating and already a shithead.
Karen hands him a cup of coffee, and he smiles perfunctory and takes a sip as their current client is telling Foggy about the horrid treatment they've been given by their landlord - Matt listens, but his mind wanders, thinking about the bruises on his back, thinking about the stitches that Claire had had to put in his side, thinking about the fact he hadn't wanted her to leave when she had.
He fingers his phone, wondering how bad it would look if he took it out in the middle of an interview and called her.
He's an awful person. He focuses and knows the client is telling the truth, knows they're scared and angry, and knows they have a propensity for cheese and tomato sandwiches for breakfast. He listens and the three of the Avocados at Law (he's starting to think of them like that, funny; he needs funny right now) circle protectively around the client as the older woman continues to talk.
*
He wanders out of the office on their lunch break; Karen and Foggy are taking the new client to the deli down the street, and he's promised he'll join them there shortly. It's hot, but not awful, and the reverberations and echoes of the focus of the streets allow him to move quickly as soon as the others disappear from sight. He uses his cane, but he walks speedily, the people around him giving way for the blind man they see in the neighborhood and now probably on TV as part of a rising law firm from right here in Hell's Kitchen. He doesn't know if that's good or bad.
The small park is at the corner up ahead, and although his stomach growls (and his side hurts when he twists to smell the hot dogs and chemicals involved in their cooking) he ignores it and finds the bench he thinks of as his and sits, leaning his cane between his legs and loosening his tie. He'd shaved this morning and he rubs his itchy throat, accidentally pressing on a bruise and wincing.
You're a warrior. Time to stop taking a beating, and time to start giving one.
He pinches his lips together.
Your training is over.
He wonders why in the hell the old man's memory is coming to him today, and he hears the voices of kids playing, their parents alternately paying attention and not. He listens for a few minutes, noting the children that aren't happy, checking out the why of it, and after a bit he's satisfied that everyone is either just tired or hungry or jealous of Brian's new Spider Man toy. Brian's got dark hair and seems to be the most popular one from what he can tell, and he amuses himself (distracts) by focusing on Brian and the way the other kids want his cool striped tee shirt and his light up shoes (they seem to be malfunctioning; Matt knows the kid will be super pissed when the LED's in them stop working around supper tonight). He listens to Brian's dad and how he (he's a dock worker, fish, and about mid 30's, scruffy but clean) is proud of Brian's grades and how much he loves Brian's mom (although Brian's dad seems to get a heart flutter speaking of her) and Matt doesn't realize Foggy's near him until the other man is almost on him.

Date: 2015-05-13 05:13 pm (UTC)“Shuttle Ten docking now,” came an automated voice.
On impulse, Winona’s hands clenched nervously before she could force herself to relax. A moment later she heard the whoosh of a door opening to her left and she turned to see the crew begin to file through the opening. Four humans in red and gold shirts, then a human and a Vulcan both in blue, then finally… her son.
He didn’t seem to notice her at first, so she got a chance to get a good look at him. He looked tired and still a little bruised, not much different than how she’d seen him most times she was on Earth leave while he was growing up. But now he was grown up, an adult. A Starfleet captain and a hero.
“Mom?”
She smiled at him, taking a step toward where he’d stopped walking in shock. “Hi, honey,” she said, hoping her voice wouldn’t break. There were just too many emotions rushing through her, crying to be let out. “I thought I’d be your welcoming committee.”
Even from the distance, she could see that his eyes were wet, and she felt answering tears prickle the corners of her eyes. It had been too, too long since they’d been together, and they hadn’t always been on good terms. Being away from home for long stretches of time, leaving him with only Sam and Frank, those had been her mistakes. She hoped she’d be able to make them right.
He still seemed too shocked to come any closer, so she moved forward, reaching out to embrace him as soon as she got close enough. He seemed to collapse into her, arms coming up to clutch tightly at her back. She thought she could feel a little wetness on her shoulder, but she was sure his shirt would soon sport an answering damp spot, so she didn’t mention it.
“I missed you, honey, I’m so sorry,” she whispered, rubbing his back with one hand as he shook with what she hoped was happiness but was probably also grief and exhaustion and all the things he’d had to keep bottled up as the Enterprise returned to Earth. “But I am so damn proud of you. Your father would be too.”
“Thanks,” he said, voice muffled in the cloth covering her shoulder. He gave her one last squeeze and pulled back, wiping an errant tear from his cheek. He looked so much more mature than the last time she’d seen him, so much more confident, but still that glint of mischief in his eye. She was glad he hadn’t lost that.
“How about we get some dinner? I’m sure they can wait for your debrief,” she said, smiling at her boy. He nodded, and without another word they turned and left the dock.
Everything, she thought as they walked out into the bright sunshine of a San Francisco afternoon, might just turn out alright.

Fill: Death Doesn't Always Mean Goodbye
Date: 2015-04-30 04:26 pm (UTC)He’s not supposed to -- not supposed to be able to -- but he’s owed a favor or fifty, he guesses. ’Cause sometimes, when he moves the rabbit ears on the old TV he falls asleep in front of every night, the screen doesn’t fill up with Dallas or Newhart or Magnum, P.I. Instead it shows him grainy shots of his boys, still saving people, hunting things, still walking the path he set them on in his grief and his rage and his lonely pain.
Sometimes he yells at the screen, the way he did back when he still followed the Cubs. Sometimes he weeps. But mostly, he swells with pride.
And now there’s this Mark, this curse that scars his firstborn’s body and soul. Dean learned it from him, he knows. Regrets. Blind and drowning in his own revenge he made his son a sacrifice, sure as Abraham held a blade to Isaac’s breast. If only he’d had an angel to stay his hand.
Not that he’d do it all differently. He’s glad his boys have the guts and skills to survive in a world that’s all teeth and claws under the shiny surface. But he never meant for it to go like this, for Dean to pigeonhole himself. A grunt. A blunt instrument. Worthless. Expendable.
His precious boy, looking up at him with Mary’s eyes and Mary’s smile and it was barbed wire dragged through his chest until Dean learned to cast his eyes down and say, “Yes sir.” Learned his job, learned his place, learned he’d never be good enough. That’s on John.
He wants one more day. Wants to take the Mark for himself and tell his sons they’ve done good. And then go back to Hell where he belongs, his hundred and twenty years a blue light special for the damage he’s done.
Mary comes down the stairs. She’s not real, no more than his beat-up recliner and never-ending final season of Taxi. She perches on his chair arm, runs her fingers through his hair. He’s usually asleep by now.
“How are the boys?” he asks because it makes her smile.
“They’re perfect,” she says, same as always. “Sammy pulled himself up and Dean counted to ten without help.” She takes his hand. “Come to bed.”
He does. They make love, even though it feels like cheating. Mary, his Mary, is up here somewhere. He stays awake and when he hears her softly snoring, he slips back down the stairs. Flips on the TV.
His boys are gone. A rainbow test pattern fills the screen no matter where he points the rabbit ears. He shambles to the kitchen, pulls a beer from the fridge. Tries to enjoy this, his Heaven, his perfect memory.
John prays.

For Murphy, it had been easy. His Irish father had goaded him, teased him, but in the end, he had hugged him. His mother, although reluctant, had let her love for her only son override her confusion and heartbreak at the words he’d said. It had been in her best interests, after all, because if Murph hadn’t ever come out, there’d be no Ethan sitting at her table today.
Ethan’s experience, on the other hand, hadn’t been so pleasant. His mother had cried, his father had screamed, all while his siblings sat around in smirking denial. Things went unspoken for months, right up until the McDowell clan had decided pretending Ethan was single was easier than reminding themselves that he was gay. For a time, he played along, hoping they’d come round. When it was certain they never would, he simply stopped coming to Sunday dinner. It was one of the reasons he’d left the big city and moved to White Pine in the first place – to get away from their stifling judgement.
Finding Travis Murphy that fateful day had been a blessing in disguise. Ethan hadn’t just found a new friend and potential boyfriend, but he’d managed to find a new family. One that welcomed him, accepted him, and wanted him. It had been a wacky twist of fate, but one he was ready and willing to accept. For better or for worse.
THANK YOU!

Date: 2015-04-30 10:16 pm (UTC)James Buchanan Barnes was born at home, same as his sisters. He was healthy and screaming and eating no problem. The neighborhood women came to congratulate Julia on a healthy little boy. Among them was a tiny Chinese woman, very much respected by her own kind. The woman held James and her eyes changed color for a moment. Of course, that was just the sun hiding behind a cloud. The woman told her that your boy will live in interesting times.
Julia knew that interesting was a curse to this woman and tried not to worry. After all, what could a Chinese woman know about the future of an English boy?
Then Laura Rogers gave birth to a frail, sickly boy on the fourth of July and the Chinese woman said oh, my, he’s so strong.
Poor Laura, but her son would die any day now and Julia could relax. The Chinese woman was just sprouting more gibberish.
