Date: 2015-05-30 11:35 am (UTC)Now, he huddled in the shadows, hungry and ragged, uncertain where he would find food. He watched the tumbrils roll past, taking their latest victims to the guillotine. In one of them would be the French aristocrat he had been told to contact. Lucas had heard the man had given the names of all his contacts in exchange for the promise of keeping his life. Once they had received the details, the revolutionaries had laughed and told him they kept their promises in the same fashion the aristos had kept theirs when promising to care for the people.
A man grabbed Lucas’ arm, asking him why he was skulking in the shadows, rather than cheering the aristos to their deaths. Lucas mumbled a reply, careful to adjust his accent so the other man could not identify his nationality or class. He held his stomach to emphasise the hunger he was blaming for his failure. The other took some dark rye bread from a grubby pocket, split it in two and gave Lucas half. Lucas, who three months previously would have considered the bread barely worthy of the pigs on his father’s estate, ate it wolfishly, before pushing through the crowd after his benefactor.
For a moment, Lucas thought his contact had seen him and was going to call out and name his as a spy. But the former aristocrat merely sneered in his general direction, not recognising him. As the crowd began to follow the tumbrils towards Madame La Guillotine Lucas slipped away. He doubted the man who had challenged him earlier, having satisfied himself Lucas was a revolutionary, would concern himself with where he had gone. The crowds were vast; it was easy to lose touch with someone.
He needed time to think. Abandoned by those he believed he could trust, attracted to the ideal of revolutionary fervour, Lucas had decisions to make about his future. He had heard the colonies were looking for men.
Eight years later, Lucas North would return to London society, a very different man from the one who had left.
