Epic Monday
Jul. 13th, 2015 12:59 pmGood Monday my doves, I am
classics_lover and I am your host this week. Today's theme is Myths and Epics. Prompts can be as epic as you like, maybe you want to work out a mythology for your favourite character, or maybe someone feels like going on a quest. Go wild.
Just a few rules:
No more than five prompts in a row.
No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
Use the character's full names and fandom's full name for ease adding to the Lonely Prompts spreadsheet.
If your prompt or fill contains anything that can be a trigger for the reader, please add a warning for that to give the reader the chance to decide if they want to read or not.
No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing. Use the spoiler cut option found here.
If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the above mentioned spoiler cut.
Prompts should be formatted as follows: [Use the character's full names and fandom's full name]
Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt
Some examples to get the ball rolling...
☺ The Odyssey, Odysseus/Penelope, "No, we are *not* going on a cruise!"
☻ Iron Man movieverse, Tony Stark/ Pepper Potts + Happy Hogan, "I feel epic today. Can we do something epic?" "No!" "NO!"
☺ The Big Bang Theory, ensemble, everyone gangs up on Sheldon and Penny (who are totally in cahoots) when success at World of Warcraft (or any other MMORPG) goes to their heads.
We are now using AO3 to bookmark filled prompts. If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3 please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2015 collection. See further notes on this new option here.
Not feeling any of today’s prompts? Check out the just created Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet. For more recent prompts to write, you can also use LJ’s advanced search options to limit keyword results to only comments in this community.
While the Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet and LJ's advanced search options are available, bookmarking the links of prompts you like might work better for searching for in the future.

With Parker as the queen of thieves, Eliot as the warlord trying to atone, Hardison(?) as the perky villager who tags along? And I have no idea about Nate and Sophie, but oh wow.

Date: 2015-09-24 03:08 pm (UTC)She listens to the stories told by the fire on the coldest nights, curled next to her brother - legends of great beasts who must be destroyed as they ravage villages and fields, or of great beasts tamed by innocence and then harnessed for the good of the people. There is always a lesson at the end, but she does not listen to that.
She asks, but once, if people can become the great beasts, and laughter surrounds her, the wise men and storytellers incapable of thinking such things.
Such is the way of women, she hears them mutter. Weak-willed and confused. After all, who would want to be a beast?
Even her brother chuckles, gently patting her back.
They are men, of course. They are already beasts and don't understand the fear that fills her when she walks alone at dusk.
.
She grows. Taller and fairer, angrier and ever more fearful. She does not like feeling afraid. The stories change into legends of gods and heroes, with no more focus on the great beasts.
And then come the rumors of a winged monster merely a few days' ride away, and the village panics at the thought of it coming closer.
She takes a neighbor's horse (for her family has none of their own) and rides.
.
There is a magic in wishing; she has learned that from stories.
Women are weak-willed and confused, but confusion is the last thing she feels as she slips off the horse's back and sends it away.
A creature of wind and fire is billowing its rage at the sky, and she understands what it roars at the heavens. Such has she felt, before, when the miller's boy -
She had told no one, for none would care, not even her brother. What use is a woman?
There is a magic in wishing.
.
Some stories are of slaying the beast; some are of taming it for the good of the people. And there are others, far rarer, never shared, of how truly wishing with all of your heart can turn you into the beast.
A woman goes missing in a small village, the very same day two dragons attack another village nearby - the dragons must have made off with her. Such a shame, the neighbors say, shaking their heads. Such a shame.
.
I have been lonely, the great golden dragon says, ancient beyond measure.
I have been afraid, the pale dragon says, still learning how to fly.
Keep me company, the elder murmurs, and I shall guard you.
The pale dragon trills her gratitude and follows her sister up and up and up, where none can reach her.

As Equals Pt 1
Date: 2015-07-13 09:15 pm (UTC)~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Listen to me, now.
He greeted Death as a friend, and together they departed this life, as equals.
There is a man, and a bridge, and a wish.
You could board a train.
There is a man, and a table, and a conversation.
You want me to go back?
There is a man, a cloak, and a children's tale.
Do not pity the dead, Harry.
There is a man, his brother, and the end of the world.
I open at the close
All of these things are true, or have been true, or will be.
I have to go back.
You are not the first, and not the last.
I don't u n d e r s t a n d
You will.
Pity the living, Harry.

Date: 2023-09-27 01:34 pm (UTC)"Hello," he tells the headstone, a single daffodil dangling from loose fingers. "I would have come sooner, but no one ever told me where you were." He gently twists the stem, takes one step forward, snow crunching beneath his feet. "All they ever told me was I had Mum's eyes and looked like Dad, as if that meant anything." Another step forward. "You died for me, they said. I needed to honor that sacrifice."
He stares at the stone, at the names that have loomed over his entire life, the names of two people who loved him enough to die fighting. "Would you be proud?" he asks. "You died so I could live, and I have lived." One more moment and then he sharply shakes his head.
Letting the daffodil fall onto the grave, he turns in place and is gone, silent as a breath. Moonlight shines on a single daffodil, gleaming brightly, and a trail of blood leading to it.

Date: 2015-11-27 04:17 am (UTC)They do not speak of after,
when the simple peasant girl
must wear the finery of court
and play a game she never learned.
They do not speak of after,
when the girl-child who
ran through the woods freely
chasing birds and plucking flowers
must be still and silent
and never speak her mind.
They do not speak of after,
when the maiden has become queen
and the power she wielded once
as a nobody out in the world
is stolen from her along with
every dream she ever had
of a life of her own.
No, they do not speak of after.
It does not fit their story.
Will you listen to me
as I tell you the truth?

Date: 2015-07-14 09:59 am (UTC)Sophos's ears burned hotter. "I wrote a poem. About you. Us. Finding the Gift." He paused. "Mostly you."
Gen—and he was Gen, for the moment, not Attolis on his throne—arched an eyebrow in an expression that couldn't quite cover his bemusement. "Well—I'm flattered."
"Oh, good." Sophos blundered on, "I've always liked epic poetry, it's so sweeping and vast and— and epic, I guess. And it lasts for so long, once you get the rhythm in your head you never forget it—it's designed that way, you know, for oral tradition—and I wanted to try my hand at it, not that I could ever live up to the ancient tales, but I was trying to think of what I could write and it just sort of, happened, sorry, you don't have to listen to it, I'll just put it away somewhere and we can forget all about it—"
"Sophos, stop." Gen was laughing, one hand held up to stop the onslaught. "It's okay, really, I want to hear it."
"Truly?"
"Truly. In fact, I will assume it says terrible things about me until proven otherwise, so you'd better read it to me right now."
"It's at my workdesk," Sophos admitted, a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. "Shall I go fetch it?"
Gen nodded gravely. "I think that would be in the best interests of your health and safety." As Sophos rose, he continued, seemingly half to himself, "Limericks, ditties, tavern songs . . . Somehow I never expected to be the subject of epic poetry."
"You stole a centuries-old legendary artifact. What did you think would happen?"
Gen shrugged, rocking back on his stool. "I thought I would be one in a long list. Turns out I was the last." He trailed off in moody reflection for a moment, then brightened. "You know, if I like your poem, I may have to commission you for another. Perhaps one about the tragic romance between a mountain thief and a lowland queen . . ."
Though shaking his head vigorously, Sophos had to push back a laugh. "She would have me hanged."
Gen sighed. "Alas, you're probably right." He paused thoughtfully. "You know, Costis doesn't have the power to order you executed. I'm sure you could find something to write about him."
Sophos held up his hands in a warding gesture. "One poem at a time, greedyguts. You still have to decide whether I've horribly insulted you or not."
"You're right, I do. Off with you."
Grinning, Sophos backed out the door to retrieve his masterpiece.
