Tuesday: Names & Naming
Feb. 16th, 2016 07:00 amHello, everyone. I’m still
draycevixen for those playing along at home. :D
Today's theme is Names & Naming. Prompts can be anything on this subject. Perhaps there's a really good explanation for why someone ended up being named Scunthorpe (it could happen). Perhaps someone has taken an alias or been "gifted" with a name by someone else. Then there's the matter of nicknames. You decide.
Just a few rules:
No more than five prompts in a row.
No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
Use the character's full names and fandom's full name for ease adding to the Lonely Prompts spreadsheet.
No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing, or use the spoiler cut option found here.
If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the above mentioned spoiler cut.
Prompts should be formatted as follows: [Use the character's full names and fandom's full name]
Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt
Some examples to get the ball rolling...
Person of Interest, Harold Finch/John Reese, Harold wasn't the only one with an alias
Lucifer (TV), Lucifer Morningstar +/ any, He'd never had as much fun with his name as he's having in L.A.
Sleepy Hollow, Ichabod Crane /+ any, it's a difficult name to have in the 21st century
We are now using AO3 to bookmark filled prompts. If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3 please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2016 collection. See further notes on this new option here.
Not feeling any of today’s prompts? Check out the just created Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet. For more recent prompts to write, you can also use LJ’s advanced search options to limit keyword results to only comments in this community.
While the Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet and LJ's advanced search options are available, bookmarking the links of prompts you like might work better for searching for in the future.

Date: 2016-02-17 02:01 am (UTC)But Lucifer is probably the closest thing to the name God gave him. When he first awoke to his function and purpose, it was to the Word washing over him, naming him, forming him. God spoke in a pure language, one lost to humans long ago (and whether it was the result of a flood or a tower he will not say, because while he is honest, he is also a man of mystery when it suits him), and his name, his true name, is one he can no longer speak, because no one alive knows how to hear it.
He was the angel who would shine as bright as the morning star, carrying arrows of light into battle against the darkness. He was to deliver the illumination of truth against the shadow of ignorance. It was his job to convey the Warmth and Light and Love of the Father to all his children. (Things got a bit muddled up along the way, and now little naked babies fire arrows of love at people, but the original intention was something grand, something beautiful.)
He keeps his name to himself, because it is the one thing that God gave him that he cannot take away (and He's taken everything else - his home, his purpose, his identity as the most beloved angel, the fun out of life). But he will answer to Lucifer. For now. He likes the way it rolls off the tongue, the sibilance and the long vowels and the short vowels and the way he can really relish the initial consonant. If people ever come up with something better, the Light Bringer who is the Prince of Darkness (or is that Dracula these days? So hard to keep up with the supernatural fads), he will try that on for size.

Date: 2016-02-16 02:10 pm (UTC)Fill 1/2: Stargate Atlantis, John Sheppard/Rodney McKay + AJ
Date: 2016-02-16 06:27 pm (UTC)But the first time his son smiled at him, tiny fingers wrapped around Rodney’s thumb, Rodney felt like a hero.
The most difficult thing turned out to be picking a name.
“There are just so many ways to screw it up,” Rodney complained to John, who had the nameless baby carefully cradled in his arms while he tried to feed him his bottle. “It has to be a masculine name, that’s important. You don’t know what it was like, growing up with a name like Meredith.”
“You’re over-thinking this, McKay. His name doesn’t have anything to do with the person he’ll grow up to be.”
“Easy for you to say, John. I bet you never got into fights about your name.”
“No. Not my first name.”
“Oh.” Rodney wasn’t sure he should ask for more details about that. He’d never thought that growing up as a Sheppard might be just as problematic as growing up a Meredith.
“Besides, you have plenty of suggestions.”
That was true. They’d compiled quite a list, because of course everyone wanted to weigh in. Every nationality of the expedition members was represented, as well as Athosian and Satedan names.
“I’m not sure Stanislav McKay is the way to go.”
“Better than Einar,” John said with a smirk.
Actually, now that Rodney thought about it, John was the only one who hadn’t offered up any suggestions. Not real ones, anyway. Doc and Maverick never made the written list.
“What would you name him?” Rodney asked. “And I don’t mean joke names.”
John shrugged with one shoulder, all his focus on the baby. “He’s your son, Rodney. This needs to be your decision.”
“Our son,” Rodney automatically corrected. He didn’t care about genetics. John was raising this baby with him, and he deserved to be counted as the baby’s father too. He had no idea why John was reluctant to assume that mantle, but it certainly wasn’t because he didn’t love the baby. The look on his face as he held that bottle steady almost took Rodney’s breath away.
“You really want my advice?”
“I wouldn’t have asked if I didn’t.”
John shot him an amused look. “Choose a name that means something to you. Something that fits your manly criteria. When he’s old enough to ask, he’ll know that you didn’t just grab a random name out of a baby book.”

Date: 2016-02-16 10:29 pm (UTC)For the last two days they had been back in the Redcliffe farms and helping the farmers, and after closing two rifts, Maxwell had felt like he could sleep for a whole day. In the end he had slept only six hours, but it was better than nothing. At least his back wasn't hurting anymore, even if he would probably have to buy himself another staff.
Only after a short bath he realized that he hadn’t seen Iron Bull, Dorian and Cole anywhere when he had woken up. Once he put his clothes on he went to search for his friends, but fortunately he didn’t have to go very far, as Iron Bull was rather easy to spot even in a forest, and Dorian’s elegant clothes were usually easy enough to notice as well.
As he stepped closer to them he noticed Cole was kneeling on the ground, his back to Maxwell, and Bull and Dorian were observing him. The uncertainty and uneasiness on Dorian’s face would have normally made Maxwell worry, but the bright smile on Bull’s face told him that it couldn’t have been anything too dangerous.
“Come on, he’s cute! His fur is almost the same colour as Krem’s hair,” Bull said, leaning against one tree, grinning.
“Yes, I am certain your Lieutenant would appreciate the comparison,” Dorian replied, still unimpressed, and Maxwell snorted.
“Are you hiding something from me?”
Bull turned his head to look at Maxwell, while Dorian was still eyeing something distrustfully, as if he didn’t want to let it out of his sight.
“Hiding? Nah. Cole found himself a new friend. Come on, look at the little guy, boss.”
As soon as he stepped closer to Cole, Maxwell realized what Bull and Dorian were talking about. Cole was petting a small mabari puppy. Maxwell wasn’t an expert, so he wasn’t sure how old the animal was, but he did know that he wasn’t looking well. He had been probably walking around the forest for a while before Cole had found him.
“Maybe he belongs to someone from the farms?” Maxwell knelt down next to Cole and reached for the mabari carefully. The puppy, after sniffing his fingers for a while, started to wag his tail, jumping happily between Maxwell and Cole, and it was difficult not to smile at him.
“I asked, but they don’t know him,” Cole answered. “He was hurting, lost and alone, so I gave him bread and some ham. He likes ham.”
“Most of us do,” Dorian murmured and Maxwell smirked at that. The puppy was clearly reacting to the word “ham,” since as soon as Cole mentioned it, the mabari started to bark happily and then put his front paws on Cole’s knees, as if waiting for something.

Date: 2016-02-16 03:36 pm (UTC)season 2
Date: 2016-03-24 06:08 pm (UTC)"He's the only who gets to call me that," Sam said once, nodding towards Dean.
Dad called him that, up until the day he died, and he knows that Mom did, too, though he of course doesn't remember. Bobby, Pastor Jim, Caleb, most of Dad's connections, they all called him that, until he grew taller than them.
Only one person at Stanford ever called him that, and after the way he reacted, they didn't it but the once.
It's an admonishment and a comfort and a reminder. It's love in two syllables. It's so many things that can't be said.
It's a plea, while Sam is dying in the mud, wrapped in Dean's arms, and it follows him into the darkness.
