Date: 2016-04-11 06:35 am (UTC)Fill: (and a little John/Alison) (post-series)
Date: 2016-04-12 01:30 am (UTC)But after a few weeks, she was sure. He was always watching her.
He was younger than she'd expected, given all she'd heard. He barely looked old enough to shave. But she recognized the shadows in his eyes, same as the older soldiers around him. The way they sat in a circle near him, angled toward him, like he was their earth and they were his moons, was intimidating. She'd seen them go out with their guns, come back soot-streaked and blank-eyed having destroyed more robots. That they were in awe of someone basically the same age as her was...well. If they were in awe of him, she was nothing compared to him.
And yet he watched her, sliding his gaze toward her when he thought she wasn't looking, although he never looked away when she caught him.
She'd heard of more than one girl angling to get on John's good side in hopes that they'd get priority of protection when danger struck. A couple had even tried to seduce him, but he'd turned them down firmly.
Finally, she managed to catch him alone, because she wanted to ask him, had to know.
"Why do you always look at me?"
"You remind me of someone I used to know, someone I'm going to know."
"Did you love her?"
"I was in love with her."
"Where is she now?"
"Neither here nor there, neither now nor then," he said.
"How much do I look like her?"
"Exactly like her."
"Am I her?"
"No. You don't have her metal heart." But he leaned in and kissed her, softly, and then he gave her one of the bracelets that marked her as safe, as human.
And he let her go.

Date: 2016-04-11 10:03 am (UTC)Stargate: Atlantis, Evan Lorne, he really is a robot.
Fill: lawyer!AU, plus a little SG-1
Date: 2016-04-11 01:28 pm (UTC)He stepped out of his office and looked around. The entire science department was gone, Sam and Rodney and Zelenka up at the state capital at the federal courthouse, duking out a patent infringement case. Most of Janet’s med mal team was gone, too, at the hospital for depositions.
Quiet days were much appreciated, honestly. Cam was still recovering from the Great Wednesday Nerf War last week when Vala, who’d lived an odd and sheltered but otherwise wild life, discovered Nerf guns and thought she could take on Teal’c.
Cam had to backtrack and grab his mug before he headed for the break room and the welcome scent of coffee, and when he turned back around he saw Lorne doubled over at his desk, dangerously still. Cam watched him for a moment. Was he moving? He didn’t look like he was breathing. Was he all right?
Cam started toward him. “Lorne, are you okay?”
“Just fine, sir,” Lorne said, his voice muffled. He was hunched in on himself.
“Do you need me to get Carson?” Even though Carson did family law, he, too, had gone to medical school. Having two doctors on hand was incredibly useful.
“No, really, I’m fine. I was just feeling a little off - processing speed a little whacky, processor a little overclocked maybe? - so I just need to make a couple of adjustments and I will be fine.”
Cam blinked, confused, but then there was a snap, like a plastic lid closing on a tupperware, and Lorne set aside a small screwdriver.
When he turned around in his spinning chair, he was buttoning his shirt with quick, deft hands. He straightened his tie (Harry Potter themed, red with gold lightning bolts) and smiled at Cam. “Did you need something?”
Cam stared at the little screwdriver and the honest-to-goodness red blinking beneath Lorne’s white button-down shirt, some kind of red LED.
“Sir?” Lorne asked, sounding concerned.
Cam dragged his spinning mind back under control. “No. Nothing. I was worried about you. Glad you fixed your, um, processor thingie. Gotta go. Man needs coffee.” And he sped into the break room.
As soon as he was out of Lorne’s earshot, he fished his cell phone out of his pocket and called John.
“John, I know we’ve been having a lot of fun, making bets about whether or not your paralegal is a robot, but seriously, he is a robot, and I’m kind of freaking out. Call me. But not where he can hear.”
In retrospect, the smarter thing to do would have been to just call John and lay down more money on Lorne actually being a robot. He was so absorbed in his thoughts that he didn’t notice Teal’c and Vala sneak by, pick up a screwdriver and red LED from Lorne, and head back to their cubicles.

Date: 2016-04-14 03:33 pm (UTC)(prequel to this; Disney's Sleeping Beauty modern-day AU)
It is a long, protracted, absolutely perfect argument that finally allows her to attend university. The humans she calls her parents are worried but her father ensures that the paperwork is flawless and her mother takes her shopping for everything a freshman would need.
She herself is nervous but she's read every academic article on students, watched all the films and television shows, devoured several hundred fiction and nonfiction texts. (There is so much time available humans cannot utilize due to their need for sleep.)
She had been created because her parents could not have a child. Once she'd attained a certain level of self-awareness, she'd wondered why they didn't just adopt a human child. Or employ a surrogate. She has never asked.
She has always looked the same: a blonde human girl of around 18 years, tall and thin, pale, with blue eyes identical to her 'mother's. Her cheekbones are her 'father's. They crafted her to resemble them the way a biological was most likely to. She was designed to go through all the stages of development, which is why she was surprised that her parents never expected her to attend university.
She loves to learn. She loves to watch people. She loves to play with dogs and pet cats and ride horses. She loves dancing in the rain.
Do you understand what 'love' is? her mother asked her once. Her father never seemed to hesitate in treating her the way she's learned humans treat their daughters. Her mother sometimes did. Perhaps because they had been unable to hold her when she was younger? Physically, she's always been the same size. Mentally, emotionally - emotionally? she'd heard her mother yell once. it's wires and plastic, Stefan! It is not a child.
She is more than wires and plastic, though; she has synthetic flesh, yes, but a heart that beats. She is a perfect facsimile of a human woman of 18.
Love, she thinks, gazing around the center of campus, where students are hurrying to and fro, talking with companions, stretching out on the grass. As far as her research has determined, not even humans fully understand 'love', though they bandy the term around constantly.
"Excuse me," a pleasant, mid-range male voice calls from behind her. "Can I help you find something?"
Smiling, she turns.

Date: 2016-04-11 12:11 pm (UTC)Fill. Stargate: Atlantis, John Sheppard/Rodney McKay. Royalty!AU.
Date: 2016-04-12 01:24 am (UTC)The fact that Rodney, born to the Lesser Physicus of Milky Way, outshone their Prince as a Favored, however... that had nearly resulted in his being sent away for his safety and for the security of the throne. If not for Queen Sarah having interceded, he likely would have been sent back to his home galaxy due to the death threats had been levied against the toddler.
No one argued it or threatened him now: they'd seen every last moment of his devotion to their City and they loved it, praised it, reveled in it.
“She's pitching a fit.”
“Nice of you to notice.”
“What's her problemata this time?”
Rodney glared at the King between the ledges of the consoles. “I don't know, John, what could her problemata be? Shall we waste time discussing what you already know or shall I finish fixing it?”
Smartly, John didn't say anything further, knowing he was caught out by the one person in Atlantis that he couldn't bear to upset. For many reasons.
“I do not understand how you could possibly be so stulti to think that it was a good idea.” The glare increased. “Did you not think before you acted? Wait, no, do not reply—I already know the answer. Fatuus.”
“Sir?”
John sighed, seeing how Evan, the Imperator of his Royal Guard, smirked at the play between the King and the Greater Physicus of Pegasus—the Royal Guard would certainly have something to gossip about this evening.
“Go... patrol. Something.”
“Yes, your Highness.”
Rodney yelled, “Don't inflate his ego!” from the guts of the Rendering Unit.
“Forgive me for calling him by his title.”
“When he stops angering my City, he can be called by his title,” he growled back, “She's burned out the control crystal to ensure that he doesn't siphon power like that again. Do you not remember how long it takes to grow a new one?”
A spanner slid across the floor.
“You're sleeping on the stratum tonight.”
Evan hid a laugh under a cough, or he tried to at least, before hieing himself and the rest of the Guard into the corridor.
“Rodney...”
“Don't try that tone on me! She threw a fucking ingenium tantrum because of you and now she's going to be apologizing to me and you know what that means.”
Oh, John was well aware of the displays and gifts that would come over the next fortnight, though he prayed to Amelius that certain machinery stayed dormant this time. He truly was not up for another round with the Genere Mutatio.
Of course, there were some benefits to Atlantis' showering his Consort with apology tributes—John'd seen Rodney's happiest smile after she'd called the Flagisallus pods in close just so he could touch them, and he'd seen the slight tinge of a blush when Rodney had discovered the vicaria ventris keyed for only them—which sometimes benefited him as well.
He usually hadn't pissed off his City though.
“I don't supposed I could offer you apology coierit?”
Pliers snapped through the air, elongating the gesture of Rodney's arm. “What part of you're sleeping on the stratum tonight did you misunderstand, hm?”
John pouted.
“That doesn't work on me.”
A shower of sparks sprayed out from the console, lighting the room brightly before dying away. Rodney laid there through it, his praetexta somehow thankfully not catching alight despite the mess of fabric, and, spitting a curse at the wiring, resumed working.
(In their quarters, high in the central tower, lights flicked on to cast their balneum in a pale glow. The spigots turned to fill the alveum until it frothed with from the mixture of salt and soap, and steam began to rise from the vents. The linens in the cabinet began to warm; the balcony doors opened to let the fresh night air in.
John had dared to say, “I think she's trying to seduce you,” upon seeing it all.
And Rodney had just smiled beatifically at him, and replied, “She is.”)

Date: 2016-04-11 12:12 pm (UTC)Fill 1/2: SGA, Rodney + John + surprise!
Date: 2016-04-12 01:16 am (UTC)Rodney’s smile faltered. “I...thought you’d be pleased. You have a body now! You can interact with the denizens of the city more fully, and -”
She spun on him, eyes flashing with fury. “How dare you presume to know my wants and desires! This thing you’ve done is - is an abomination. I was never meant to be like this, never wanted to be like this.”
Rodney backed up a step. The body he’d given her was human, grown like Carson Beckett’s clone, as vulnerable as any human body, but she was Atlantis, and she was still connected to the city. She was still in the city. Rodney had made sure of that.
“I’m sorry,” he began. “Look, if you don’t like it, I can…put you back to the way you were.” Kill her, he meant, and he swallowed hard. “Is that what you want?”
“Yes!” she cried, and then, “No!” And then, voice smaller, “I don’t know.”
John came dashing into the lab at full speed. “What’s going on? What’s the emergency?”
Relief flooded Rodney’s limbs. “There you are! Wait, what emergency?”
John skidded to a halt. “Didn’t you page me? I got a message on my laptop. Emergency. In this lab. It was one of those automated Atlantis messages, like when someone sets off a quarantine or -” He noticed the woman standing in front of Rodney, shoulders hunched, expression miserable.
John cleared his throat. “Hello, Miss. Are you all right?”
She flung himself into his arms, bursting into tears.
John stumbled back a couple of steps, eyes wide with horror, but he put his arms around her and steadied her, patting her hair carefully. “Hey, hey, what’s wrong?”
“It’s all his fault.” She flung a hand in Rodney’s direction, refusing to look at him.
John cast him a questioning look that was half-accusing. Rodney winced and ducked his head.
“What did he do?”
“He did this to me. Made me like this.” She buried her face in John’s shirt and sobbed more.
John looked confused. “Um, made you like what?”
The woman wrenched herself back. “Like this!” She ran a hand down her body, and John’s gaze lingered on her curves a little too long.
Rodney cleared his throat pointedly, and John snapped his gaze back to her face.
“What were you like before?” And then realization crossed John’s face. “Were you a man?” He cast Rodney a horrified look.
“No! I would never -”
“John,” the woman said, sniffling, “it’s me. Atlantis.”
“I’m sorry, did you say Atlantis?” John echoed.
She nodded, hunching her shoulders once more.
John turned to Rodney. “What the hell did you do?”
“I was trying to help,” Rodney protested.
“How is this helping? Who’s running the city?”
“She’s still connected to the city!”
“Then the emergency alert on my laptop -” John turned back to Atlantis. “Was that you?”
She nodded again, sniffled. “I don’t want to be like this! I never wanted this. I want to go back to - to me.”
“Rodney,” John said through gritted teeth, “put her back.”
“I can’t just put her back,” Rodney snapped. “She’s a person. She’s alive. You’re asking me to kill her.”
John blinked down at her. “Oh.”
