Monday: Firsts
Jun. 20th, 2016 06:38 amHi! I’m
brumeier, this is my first time hosting here, and today's theme is FIRSTS! Prompts can be anything, so long as it’s a first something (first date, first base, first grade).
Just a few rules:
No more than five prompts in a row.
No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
Use the character's full names and fandom's full name for ease adding to the Lonely Prompts spreadsheet.
No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing, or use the spoiler cut option found here.
If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the above mentioned spoiler cut.
Prompts should be formatted as follows: [Use the character's full names and fandom's full name]
Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt
Some examples to get the ball rolling...
+ Stargate Atlantis, Rodney McKay, first time he felt like he was part of the team
+ Hawaii Five-0, Steve McGarret/Danny Williams, first overnight with intent
+ Any, Any, first fight
We are now using AO3 to bookmark filled prompts. If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3 please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2016 collection. See further notes on this new option here.
Not feeling any of today’s prompts? Check out the just created Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet. For more recent prompts to write, you can also use LJ’s advanced search options to limit keyword results to only comments in this community.
While the Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet and LJ's advanced search options are available, bookmarking the links of prompts you like might work better for searching for in the future.

Date: 2016-06-20 06:23 pm (UTC)“Sir?” Stackhouse asked.
“That’s Rodney’s spot.”
“Rodney’s...spot?”
“Yep. Rodney always sits between the fire and his own tent. Teyla always sits on the side of the circle oriented toward the Stargate, and Ford always sits closest to the food.”
“Oh. I didn’t realize, sir.”
“There’s no way you could have known, Sergeant. But you know how teams are - we have our own quirks and habits.”
Rodney felt something warm unfurl in his chest. Sheppard had called them a team. Rodney was part of a we.
“I’ll just sit over here, sir.”
“Good idea, Sergeant.” Sheppard said, louder, “Rodney, get over here if you want some food before Ford gets it.”
“I’m not actually a teenger anymore, sir,” Ford grumbled.
“But you eat like one.”
When Rodney arrived and took his spot beside the campfire, Sheppard was spooning up an MRE like they were going out of style. Teyla, however, had something roasting on a spit over the fire.
“Would you like some, Rodney?” She smiled at him. “John tells me it tastes like chicken.”
“Don’t listen to Sheppard, Doc,” Ford said. “To him, everything tastes like chicken.”
“Is that bad?”
Ford held up the label from the MRE. Macaroni and cheese.
“Right,” Rodney said. “I’d be glad to share with you, Teyla. As long as it’s citrus-free.”
“What is citrus?” Teyla asked.
“Poison,” Rodney said at the same time as Sheppard said, “Delicious.”
Teyla looked perplexed, and Ford laughed.
And Rodney decided he was okay with this team thing after all.

Date: 2016-06-21 02:15 am (UTC)The bathroom door banged open. “John!” It was Rodney.
He straightened up, swiped a hand over his mouth. “Don’t you believe in knocking?” He flipped the toilet lid closed and hit the flush button.
“Oh please, everyone could hear you from three rooms away, retching like a regency heroine fetching up her accounts,” Rodney said, and it took John a moment to wrap his head around that reference.
“Did you just imply that I’m with child?”
“No, but you are puking like a woman with morning sickness.” Rodney rolled his eyes. “Come on! Cam and the Snakeskinners want us to join in on their pre-show ritual.”
“Be right there,” John said. “Let me rinse my mouth.”
“Yeah, do that.” Rodney wrinkled his nose. He patted John’s shoulder delicately, then said, “Come on!” And he dashed away.
Since when did Rodney have that much energy? Had someone given him coffee this late in the day? Because they’d all be paying for it later.
John rifled through his backpack for mouthwash and a toothbrush, did a quick brush and rinse, and went to join the others backstage. The Snakeksinners were gathered in a circle with the rest of the Space Monkeys, arms around each other like it was a football huddle.
Ronon beckoned John into the circle, and he ended up tucked between Teyla and Hailey.
“All right, team,” Cam said, “it’s the first night of the second half of the tour, and the first night the Space Monkeys are playing with us. It’s historical.”
John’s stomach roiled again, and that was definitely nerves. But he was ready for this. He’d been ready for this since he first picked up his grandfather’s guitar when he was five years old.
“Now, what’s gonna happen on stage tonight?” Cam asked.
His bandmates yelled, “Rock ‘n’ roll!”
“And what’s the audience gonna do?”
“Lose their minds!”
“And what are we going to do?”
“Be legendary!”
John’s nerves were jangling, and he was buzzing with energy. Even though they were backstage, he could hear the crowd cheering and screaming. John had dared to peek out earlier before Evan shooed him away from the wings, and there were a lot of people out there. More than they’d ever played in front of before.
Cam cleared his throat. “Vala, your solo on Never Too Late is amazing. Hit it hard.”
She nodded. “Amelia, the bass line on Goodbye Angels is incredible. You were brilliant for writing it, and you play it brilliantly.”
Amelia looked at Hailey. “Hailey, your pick-up harmony on Die Born is genius. Make it happen again.”
“Grace,” Hailey said, “your energy is incredible. Keep it going tonight.”
Grace smiled. “Cam, you’re beautiful. Get out there and break some hearts.”
Cam actually blushed. Then he nudged Rodney. “Your turn.”
Rodney blinked. “Um, what?”
“Talk to your team.”
“Oh, right!” Rodney cast a desperate look around the circle, and John’s heart thumped, but then Rodney looked right at him and said, “John, you can make a guitar weep, and you can make it rejoice, and you can always make it sing. Good luck tonight.”
For one moment, John couldn’t speak, but then Teyla nudged him, and he said, “Jennifer, you’ve got the best smile. You light up a room. Light it up tonight.”
Jennifer blushed, but she kept on gamely. “Ronon, your hands are magic.”

Date: 2016-06-21 06:05 am (UTC)"It was the best solution we had." Clint squeezed his shoulder. He nodded at T'challa, who nodded at the team of beautiful young women in white lab coats.
One of them tapped rapidly on her tablet, and the stasis chamber hissed open. Steve flinched at the icy air that flooded out.
The woman tapped at her tablet some more, and the chair Bucky was strapped into levered upward, and the straps retracted. Blue light flared, formed an unholy halo around Bucky's head.
But he opened his eyes. And he blinked. "Did I fall asleep?"
"Only for a little while," the woman said.
Bucky blinked some more, scanning his surroundings. His gaze fell on Steve.
"Hey," he said, and rose up.
Before Steve could ask if he was all right, if he felt okay, Bucky was across the room and capturing Steve in a kiss, and Steve hesitated for only a fraction before he surrendered, because whatever Echo and Sierra and their other friends had done to Bucky, he was back, and he was safe - from himself.

Date: 2016-06-20 10:40 am (UTC)Fill: Disney's Descendants - Evie/Jay
Date: 2016-06-21 02:54 am (UTC)“He was flirting with you,” Jay snarled, glaring at the other teen.
Evie huffed, turning to Flynn and shooing the son of Rapunzel and Eugene away. Flynn was only too happy to oblige. With a rushed, “thank you, Evie” the boy was gone.
Jay took a step forward to follow but Evie blocked his path, arms crossed and narrowed eyes.
“People flirt with me everyday, Jay!” He clicked his tongue in response. “Oh don’t you dare do that to me, Mister! You know this, what makes him any different?”
“He’s not. He’s nothing special.” Jay ground out.
Evie blinked, “Exactly! So what made you think that was okay? We’re doing so good here Jay.”
“You don’t think I know that!” He yelled, swinging his arm out to wave around them, “sure we have it good here, Princess. But that doesn’t change who we are. Not completely anyway. You’re my girl. If the others don’t get that then that’s their problem.”
He fumed, his hands clenching and unclenching at his sides. She just wasn’t getting it. He had to make a point. Show these prince’s they can’t take her from him.
“Jay,” Evie called for his attention, her voice tense. “Flynn wasn’t the first one, was he?”
Jay refused to answer her. Or too look at her for that matter. He angrily kicked at the gravelled path. This wasn’t going to end well. He could feel it.
“How many?”
“What?”
“How many of the boys have you gone after?” Evie demanded.
The thief muttered something under his breath.
“Jay…” His name fell from her lips in warning.
“I don’t know.”
“I see.”
He didn’t like the sound of that or the deafening silence that followed. Jay swallowed, cautiously looking up. The princess’s fist collided with his face. A curse slipped from his mouth and he reached up to touch the throbbing skin.
Evie hissed in pain but stood tall. “You are an idiot.” She spun around and stomped away in a huff of blue.
Jay gently touched his face. He knew this was going to end badly. They never really fought before. Little play fights here and there that always ended with kisses. This was real and he really needed to fix it before it was too late.

Date: 2016-06-20 11:45 am (UTC)Stargate Multiverse, Any, The first mission scar.
Fill: Rodney + Jeannie
Date: 2016-06-20 06:52 pm (UTC)Rodney glanced over his shoulder. “Hm?”
“Your arm.” Jeannie pointed.
Rodney glanced down. She was pointing to the scar from here Kolya had cut him during the Genii invasion of Atlantis Year One. “Oh. Just - cut myself.”
“On what?”
“A, er, a knife.”
“A knife? What were you doing with a knife?”
“A knife is part of standard tac gear,” Rodney said. “I get a gun too, you know. I’m - field-rated.”
Jeannie frowned at him. “You’re a physicist. What are you doing out in the field with soldiers? Do I need to have a talk with Colonel Sheppard?”
“I’m doing research in the field, obviously,” Rodney said.
“Then maybe you shouldn’t be allowed to have a knife.”
“I’m not a child,” Rodney said. “I’m perfectly fine with a knife. The person with the knife was just - not perfectly fine with me.”
Jeannie narrowed her eyes. “You said you cut yourself.”
“I might have made a smart comment and someone else cut me,” Rodney said.
“That’s it. I’m calling John.” Jeannie turned away and reached for her phone.
Rodney caught her wrist. “No, Jeannie. Don’t. This isn’t John’s fault, all right? If not for him, I wouldn’t be talking to you right now. This little scar -”
“It’s not little, Meredith.”
“It’s little compared to what could have happened,” Rodney said. “Please. Don’t make John feel any worse than he does for all the times he feels like he failed me.”
“All the times?” Jeannie asked.
Rodney sighed.
“Mer, what are they doing to you out there?”
“They’re keeping me safe while I try to change the universe,” he said.
Jeannie searched his gaze for a long moment, then nodded and let her hand fall to her side. “Fine. I won’t call John. But that scar isn’t small.”
“It is,” Rodney said. It was, compared to the one on his ass from where he got shot with an arrow, or any number of other scars he’d accrued from missions over the years.
“Whatever.” Jeannie turned away, expression sulky. Then she turned back, hugged him, and elbowed him aside. “Heroic physicist you may be, housekeeper you are not. That’s not how you clean a whisk.”
“I can clean a whisk,” Rodney protested.
“Let me show you how it’s done right,” Jeannie said, and Rodney let her, because if this was the biggest thing she had to worry about, the cleanliness of her whisks, then every scar Rodney had was worth it.

Date: 2016-06-21 06:36 am (UTC)Lizzy Mare glanced over her shoulder at her father and smiled, pleased. Every time she smiled, she looked just like her mother, and John’s heart skipped a beat at the memory of Teyla, who’d fallen in battle so many years ago.
“How close are we?” Lizzy Mare asked, closing her eyes.
Alexej, peering at his laptop, said, “Get ready to drop out of hyperspace in three...two...one!”
John reached braced himself against the Chair reflexively, felt the whole of Atlantis shudder, slow. Stop.
When he opened his eyes, nothing had changed.
Lizzy Mare opened her eyes. “Here, let’s update the display.”
And there, floating in the vastness of space, was the blue-white-green marbling of Earth.
John’s throat closed. After twenty years, the Expedition had come home. He tapped his radio. “Grodin?”
“Yes, Commander Sheppard?”
“Open a channel to the SGC,” John said.
“Right away, sir.” There was a pause, and then Grodin said, “Broadcasting now.”
John cleared his throat. “Stargate Command, this is Major John Sheppard of the Atlantis Expedition. Sorry we missed curfew, but we’re home now.”
There was no response. Then there was a crackle of static, and an unfamiliar man said, “This is General Evan Lorne of what’s left of Stargate Command. Are you really Major Sheppard?”
“Yes, sir,” John said. “I mean, I’m also the High Commander of the United Pegasus Coalition, but it’s been a good long while since I’ve been able to turn in my paperwork for a promotion.”
“United Pegasus Coalition?” General Lorne asked, and then John heard the blessedly familiar tones of Daniel Jackson.
“Does that mean you have allies? Did you make contact with the Ancients?”
“The Ancients are extinct,” John said, “but we do have allies. General Larrin of the Travelers, Commander Jinto of the Athosians, and General Sora Tyrus of the Genii Federation are long-trusted allies in the fight against the Wraith.”
“The who?” Daniel asked, but General Lorne cut in with, “Later, Doc. Listen, Sheppard, you need to round up all your allies and the biggest, baddest weapons you have, and then you need to come in as stealthily as possible.”
“Why?” John asked.
Daniel said, “As it turns out, the Goa’uld weren’t the only ones in this galaxy - or any other - trading on religion.”
“What does that even mean?” John asked.
Alexej said, “We have contact. Unidentified ship incoming. It’s -”
John stared at the display. “Massive. Lizzy Mare -”
“On it.” The chair flared blue, sank back, and she said, “Drones on standby.”
John squeezed her shoulder. “Be careful.”
“You know what we could use right now?” Lizzy Mare opened one eye and peered at him. “One of Papa’s naquadah bombs.”
The reminder of Rodney, who should’ve been in Ops with Elizabeth and Ford and Markham and all the others who hadn’t survived Pegasus long enough to see the return trip to Earth, was like a shard of glass in John’s throat. He swallowed it down.
Alexej raised one eyebrow at the mention of naquadah and fired up his radio, hollered across the comms in rapid-fire Czech to his father.
“It’ll take me a moment to get the bomb loaded into the appropriate bay,” Radek said.
“Enemy ship is powering weapons any moment now,” Alexej said, which was Alexej for hurry the hell up!
“Who the hell are they?” Stackhouse asked.
And John heard, for the first time, the voice of a Prior in his mind.
All hallowed are the Ori.

Date: 2016-06-20 11:48 am (UTC)Any, Any, Baby's first steps.
Fill: Han/Leia + Ben || Kylo Ren - the empire wasn't beaten in a day
Date: 2016-06-20 02:18 pm (UTC)"LEIA GET IN HERE YOU NEED TO SEE THIS!!!" Leia could hear Han yell in the living quarters in the Falcon. She looked over in the craddle making sure their daughter Jaina wasn't awoken by her father's booming voice. But she couldn't help but smirk...she was a heavy sleeper like her father.
She walked to where Han called from. It was her two boys....Han and Ben. Her husband was on his knees with his arms stretched out. And a few inches away there was their one year old son Ben, standing tall on his feet.
"Look Leia he's standing," Han said there was a proud grin on his face.
Leia couldn't help but chuckle.
"I helped bring balance to the force and I don't need it to see it clearly," She quipped shaking her head.
"Smartass," Han muttered quietly before turning back to Ben, "I am trying to get him to walk." He cleared his throat before going to back to his baby voice, Leia strangely seemed to like, "Come here Ben, you can do it Buddy."
Ben lifted his right foot slowly. He shook a little with his left foot firmly planted on the ground but he managed to quickly place his foot one step ahead of him. Impressed and proud of himself he looked up at his parents with a smug grin on his face.
Leia couldn't help but laugh. It was Han's smug grin on a one year old's face. She couldn't help but wonder if he was one day going to be like his father, trying to impress lovers by being cocky only to have it come out in a dorky manner.
"Good job Benny," Han said with a smile, "now try the other foot."
The second foot was difficult for Ben to manage. He was a bit woobily as he lifted it off the ground. But he quickly placed it firmly at the other side of his right foot. Han raised his hands in victory at his son's first steps as Leia smiled proudly.
Using this an incentive Ben went to move again, this time as quicker motion. He managed to put his right foot on the ground ahead of him, but when he lifted his left, he ended up falling flat on his butt.
Han and Leia held their breath in concern thinking Ben was going to start to cry in frustration at his failure. But instead he looked at his parents and started giggling with a toothless grin on his face.
Han snorted. Another thing their child seemed to have in common with his father, the ability to laugh at himself. The former smuggler crawled over to his son and pulled him onto his lap. Leia sat down beside them tickling Ben's stomach causing the babe to giggle.
"Don't be discouraged Ben," Leia said moving to pat his black hair, "The empire wasn't defeated in a day, you did take your first steps and your father and I are proud. You'll walk soon."
"And then," Han said kissing Ben on the forehead, "I'll teach you how the Falcon."
Leia turned to her husband and glared. Really Han, She said through the force.
"Right," Han chuckled, "One day at a time."

Date: 2016-06-20 12:02 pm (UTC)Set after CACW and pretending that after credits scene didn't happen
Date: 2016-06-20 05:00 pm (UTC)See, the thing is, Sam tries to distance himself from Bucky Barnes even before he meets the guy. He's seen the museum exhibit and knows all the textbook stories about the only Howling Commando to give his life in service of his country. When he sees the Winter Soldier, he fears that the Bucky Barnes lost to history is lost to Steve as well.
As he listens to Steve reminisce while on their search for Barnes, Sam gets to know a little more of the man behind the legend, and the bad thing is, he really thinks he might like that guy. If he'd met him in another place and another time, he might even have been attracted to him.
He's wary, so wary, of this sad, insecure, frightened husk of a man, who's just trying to live his life and doesn't want to hurt anybody, really. He's not expecting the guy to be funny, to take his attempts at being cold and distant in stride and try to worm his way into Sam's heart anyway. He's completely unprepared for the banter and how easily they fight side by side, and he damn sure isn't prepared for Barnes to throw himself between Sam and the kid in the spider costume.
"You couldn't have done that sooner?" Barnes drawls sarcastically as they're lying sprawled on the ground of the airport terminal amid shards of glass, covered in webbing that Sam's still not convinced isn't coming out of some orifice in the kid's body.
"I hate you," Sam mutters, but he really doesn't mean it. He's not sappy enough to insinuate that he really mean 'I love you,' but he thinks, maybe, some day down the road. He's got to admit, Barnes is growing on him.
Apparently he's growing on Barnes too, because once the fighting's done and the dust's starting to settle and they're hiding away in Wakanda to rest and recuperate, Barnes finds him in one of the open courtyards of the King's palace. Sam still can't believe that T'challa is on their side and offering them sanctuary at his swanky palace, but Sam's grateful, and he thinks it's doing Barnes and Steve a world of good.
He's soaking up the sun when he hears footsteps, and he expects Steve or maybe even Wanda, anyone but Barnes. The man stands at the edge of the grass, his stump covered in the black sock T'Challa's medics had given him, and his hair is washed and the cleanest Sam's ever seen it, although his facial hair could use a little grooming. He's looking at Sam with uncertainty in his eyes, shoulders hunched, and his whole body relaxes when Sam beckons him forward.
"Wasn't sure you'd want company," he says simply as he sits. "We've not really hit it off so well."
Sam chuckles softly and shrugs. "You're growing on me."
Barnes -- and he should really just start calling him Bucky -- relaxes further. "You're growing on me too. I, uh, I was wondering-" His tongue drags across his upper lip. "When I was in hiding, I was triyng my hardest to catch up on the times, and I know that guys can—"
Sam interrupts him with the crush of his lips against Bucky's, and he can't really say what made him do it. He hopes to god he was reading the lines between Bucky's rambling correctly, and when he draws back, Bucky's cheeks are flushed. "Shit. Sorry," Sam says. "That was, uh, pretty forward of me."
Bucky licks his lips again and nods. "It's okay. I like forward. I was, uh, going to ask you out on a /date/, but if you want to jump straight to kissing, I'm okay with that."
Sam stares at him in stunned silence for a handful of moments, just long enough that Bucky starts to fidget, and then he bursts out laughing. "I- Sure. Yes. To the date."
Bucky beams brightly. "Great. Dinner? T'Challa said we can use one of the private terraces overlooking the waterfalls."
Sam gives a bewildered nod, and they agree to meet at seven.
Okay, so distancing himself didn't work too well for Sam, but he supposes he can't really complain. Bucky Barnes sure does clean up nice and he's got A+ game on wooing.

Date: 2016-06-20 12:05 pm (UTC)Fill 1/2: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay, musician 'verse
Date: 2016-06-21 11:00 pm (UTC)John was a cuddler.
This came as a surprise because Rodney could see how John kept himself at arm’s length from other people. He was just as surprised to discover that he didn’t mind cuddling with John.
The best time was post-coitus, after they’d cleaned themselves up and John was still feeling loose and happy. Rodney could broach any subject during that window of time, and John would usually give sleepy, but honest, answers. Like now, when John was curled around him like a bass clef, one hand splayed on Rodney’s stomach.
“Hey,” Rodney murmured into John’s hair. “When did you start playing guitar?”
John didn’t answer right away, but Rodney didn’t mind waiting. He practiced a one-handed composition up and down John’s knobby spine.
“You first,” John finally said. “Why music? You’re a genius, you could’ve been a scientist or something. Found the cure for cancer.”
Rodney huffed out a laugh. “You think they don’t already have one? There’s more money in cancer research and treatment than in a cure.”
“I had no idea you were a conspiracy theorist. Or are you just that cynical?”
“Cynical,” Rodney replied.
“So why music instead of rocket science?”
“I like music because it has structure.” Rodney had the answer readily at hand, because it wasn’t the first time he’d been asked that question. Jeannie had pestered him endlessly about it, when he’d switched out of the science track at school. “Only twelve notes, not counting sharps and flats, but they can be arranged in an infinite variety of ways. Twelve notes to express every aspect of the human experience.”
There was a beauty in the structure that Rodney was hard-pressed to put into words. It was the same thing he liked about scientific formulas, and math equations. There was an order to it all that appealed to him, maybe because his family life growing up had been such chaos.
“And piano?” John pressed a kiss to Rodney’s clavicle.
“Ms. Greenblatt.” Rodney would never be able to say her name without scowling; it was an ingrained response. “My mother signed me up for piano lessons with her, to counteract all the academics that my father insisted on. She told me I had technical skill, but no heart. She said I couldn’t express any emotion, and was better off giving up playing all together.”
That got John up on one elbow, his expression incredulous. “Was she insane? The way you play…it’s amazing. And not just technically.”
Rodney gave him a quick kiss on the mouth for the compliment, warmed that John thought so highly of his skill.
“Well, I essentially told her to fuck off – not in those words, obviously – and I found a new teacher. I learned everything I could about music, and playing piano. So here I am, teaching at the Conservatory and playing in a Blues club.” He was proud of what he’d achieved. “Never tell a McKay they can’t do something.”
John chuckled. “I’ll keep that in mind.”
There was more kissing then, slow and lazy and sweet, and Rodney thought maybe he might be able to work up the energy for another go-round. John was excellent for his libido. But first things first.

Date: 2016-06-20 02:37 pm (UTC)For years, those words have plagued young Charles Xavier, taunting him in harsh, severe black lines on the inside of his right wrist. A constant source of distress, he can't imagine in what possible scenario his soulmate could be shouting those words at him the first time they meet.
He remembers his father's soul mark -- Oh, hello scrawled across his chest, right above his heart, in soft, wafty letters -- and his mother's matching Excuse me, so sorry in bold script on the inside of her elbow. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the placement of soul marks, just that the letters seem to match the personality of one's intended. He remembers his father telling him the story of how his parents had met, bumping into each other on the platform at the train station.
It's a sweet story, and Charles knows his grandparents had equally sweet words tattooed on their skin.
"Maybe you've swooped in and broken up a fight," his sister Raven suggests when she finds him examining the mark yet again, "and he's still angry and wanting to continue the fight."
Charles' eyebrows lift. "You think so?"
"Of course." Raven beams at him. "You couldn't hurt a fly much less an actual human being."
It's reassuring for the moment, but he still wonders, still worries, still frets. They never discuss what had happened to their stepfather, Kurt Marko, but Charles knows it wasn't a heart attack that killed him. He'd done it. He'd willed Kurt's heart to stop with just the power of his mind. He's not sure what he's capable of doing.
So he frets and he worries and he tries his hardest not to think about the words written on his wrist until—
He's on a boat commanded by the CIA on a manhunt for Sebastian Shaw, and there's a man in the water, someone like him, a mutant, and Charles has only a split second to marvel at the man's desperate attempt to stop the metal submarine with his abilities when it occurs to him that my god, he's going to drown himself!
"Let go!" he screams aloud and in the man's mind. "You have to let go!"
He's diving into the water after alerting Moira to the man's presence, because someone has to do something, and he finds the man (Erik) in the dark water. His arms wrap around Erik from behind, and he hears
Get off me! The command is barked at him, and oh, the harsh, block letters make sense; this Erik is all gnashing teeth and sharp edges.
Later, once he's coaxed Erik from the water and Shaw's escaped, he catches a glimpse of looped lines scrawled across Erik's chest. They're down in one of the bunk rooms for the crew, changing out of their wet clothes, and he blinks. "Is that- Forgive my forwardness, but that, on your chest there."
Erik averts his eyes but pulls the neckline of his shirt down so Charles can read the words scrawled over his heart, and charles starts to laugh. Let go! You have to let go!
"Such an unconventional mark," he drawls as he rolls up his sleeve and shows Erik the words on his wrist.
Something in Erik's steel blue eyes flashes, and Charles' stomach flip flops. Unconventional, he will come to realize much later, describes their relationship perfectly.
For now, there's only heat and promise in Erik's eyes, and Charles' breath catches in his throat as anticipation warms his belly. Whatever the future brings, at least he can meet it with confidence and the knowledge that his soulmate is by his side.
