Tuesday: Travel
Jun. 27th, 2016 11:56 pmHello again, everyone! I’m
adamas and today's theme is Travel. Prompts can be anything to do with travel (physical or otherwise - an emotional journey totally counts!).
Just a few rules:
No more than five prompts in a row.
No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
Use the character's full names and fandom's full name for ease adding to the Lonely Prompts spreadsheet.
No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing, or use the spoiler cut option found here.
If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the above mentioned spoiler cut.
Prompts should be formatted as follows: [Use the character's full names and fandom's full name]
Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt
Some examples to get the ball rolling...
+ Hamilton, Alexander Hamilton/Angelica Schuyler, They go to London together.
+ Any, Any/Any, We’re going to Disneyworld!
+ Deadpool, Deadpool/Vanessa, They don’t take the most traditional of honeymoons...
We are now using AO3 to bookmark filled prompts. If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3 please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2016 collection. See further notes on this new option here.
Not feeling any of today’s prompts? Check out the just created Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet. For more recent prompts to write, you can also use LJ’s advanced search options to limit keyword results to only comments in this community.
While the Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet and LJ's advanced search options are available, bookmarking the links of prompts you like might work better for searching for in the future.

Date: 2016-06-29 06:31 am (UTC)“How is it touring with the Snakeskinners?” She actually used a pen and notepad to take notes, and Rodney noticed that she wrote with strange swirls and dots. Shorthand. Actual shorthand.
“Amazing,” Ronon said.
“Dizzying,” Teyla added. “Most mornings I only know what town we are in because Evan sends us a text message.”
Ronon laughed. “I only ever know what what town we’re in because I can hear Teyla practising in front of the mirror while she brushes her teeth. Good evening, San Antonio!”
“We’re in Dallas,” Jennifer said, digging an elbow in Ronon’s ribs, and he ducked his head, mock-ashamed.
“Evan’s our PA,” John added, for Chloe’s benefit.
“Is it like you imagined, the rockstar lifestyle?” Chloe asked.
Jennifer shook her head. Elizabeth, Evan, and even Woolsey had coached them all carefully about taking turns answering questions but allowing Teyla and Jennifer the most time to speak, because they were the band leaders. Ronon didn’t mind not talking as much, and neither did John, and since Rodney didn’t perform with them, he didn’t have much to add.
“No,” Jennifer said, “but that’s kind of what I like. The Snakeskinners are really chill, and fans of both our bands are awesome, so we can hang out backstage after concerts and have a good time, but it’s not so crazy that we black out and wake up in strange places.”
“We already wake up in strange places,” John pointed out, and Jennifer said, “True.”
“We do not party every night,” Teyla said. “Sometimes we gather together in someone’s hotel room and work on writing songs.”
“Rodney works on writing songs almost every night,” Jennifer said. “If we don’t crash his party occasionally, he’d never see other humans.”
Chloe raised her eyebrows. “It’s an unusual dynamic you have, someone unquestionably part of the band who doesn’t perform with you.”
“Rodney’s not on stage with us, but he’s as integral a part of the show as any of us,” John said. “In the beginning, he was lights and sound all in one. He’s still our sound, in more ways than one, since he’s written most of our songs.”
Rodney usually preened under praise and attention, but he was a little unnerved when Chloe turned her piercing gaze on him.
“Rodney, how do you keep track of where you are?”
“Honestly, I don’t, not really. When Teyla does her ‘good evening’ bit, that’ll clue me in,” he said. “If I remember to buy a postcard for my little sister, then I’ll remember as I’m writing it, but once it’s in the mailbox, I’m thinking of sound or music or both.”
Chloe’s eyes lit up. “You send postcards to your little sister? That’s so sweet! How old is she?”
“She’s in her freshman year of college,” Rodney said, “so maybe younger is better than little.”
“Do the rest of you send postcards or letters to your family?” Chloe asked.
“If Teyla doesn’t send a selfie at least once a day, all of her tiny cousins cry and think she’s gone forever,” John said.
Teyla shook her head. “He exaggerates, but I am very close with my family.”
“My grandpa’s going deaf, so I send him text messages,” Ronon said.
“I call my mom at least every other day,” Jennifer said. “I got a pretty stern talking-to about saying ‘Hi Mom’ every time I’m on TV, though.”
It had been more of a mild warning, but Chloe laughed, and Rodney was proud of how charming and funny Jennifer was.
“What about you, John?” Chloe asked.
Rodney bit his lip. Somehow the whole disowning thing had never made it into the news despite Patrick Sheppard disowning John in front of a bunch of strangers at that photography studio.
“We’re not big talkers in my family,” John said, “but they know where I am. Truth be told, though, this is my family, right here.” He slung an arm around Ronon and Teyla’s shoulders and dragged them in for a half hug. Teyla kissed John on the cheek, and Ronon went to do the same but John swatted him away, laughing. Sometimes Rodney did really envy their easy physical camaraderie. As if she’d read his mind, Jennifer reached out and curled her fingers through his.

Date: 2016-06-28 08:20 am (UTC)Brazil reads: Saved the rain forest, almost done in by the ceviche. Avoid raw fish.
Behind an image of Ankor-Wat: Not a smoking ruin, thanks to me. Smoking bird named Kalia, check.
On the back of a picture of Honolulu harbor: Silly burke got eaten by his own trained sharks. Better him than me. Close call though.
Kyoto: Evil geniuses not as smart as they thought they were. Next time, NO FUGU. Seriously sport, raw fish will be the death of you.
He sends the occasional card to Merlin, who never admits that he keeps them, more for their cheeky content than their scenic display.
Took out the trash. Slight mishap. What's the best way to get blood out of Egyptian cotton?

I know I'm supposed to be protecting this prat, but if he doesn't stop popping his gum/his knuckles, I'm going to strangle him with his own jock strap.

Is it just me, or are camels unreasonably unpleasant and stupid? Give me a Mini Cooper any day.

Could you check my calendar and see when JB's due for his shots? Not sure if it's this month or next. Take him in for me, please, if I'm still stuck in Aukland. Ta ever so.
Merlin's favorite, though, is postmarked Key West. Instead of a beach with palm trees or other scenic view, there's a picture of a swordfish. Damn thing sunk my Zodiac after I escaped Garibaldi's sub. What is it with all these fish trying to kill me?! Pleased to report umbrella is also sword-proof. Going out for cocktails with Admiral Sandecker. Cheers!

Date: 2017-01-23 05:12 am (UTC)And John knew what he had to do.
Ronon let slip that Rodney had gotten his dog tags engraved, one with his name and vital stats on it, like an actual military dogtag, and the other with a formula. It took John mere seconds to solve the formula when Ronon showed it to him. It came out to the date John and Rodney had first met.
The only way to learn is to get out and do it, Jackson had said.
So this was it. This was John getting out and doing it. He’d cancelled his lease with the landlord and used the cash from rent to buy a beater of a car. He’d finished that lame project of Carter’s and sent her the final proof. No, he hadn’t stuck it out till the end of the semester. Yes, he’d put earnest effort into the project. He’d already been discharged from therapy.
It was a gamble, doing all that and leaving town and hoping Weir would close his case instead of filing an order to show cause and violating his probation.
Jackson was right. John deserved to be loved. He had to make things right with Rodney. So he packed all his worldly possessions into the back of the car (clothes, guitar), found an old map, plotted a course to Palo Alto, California, and hit the road.
Stanford, here I come.
Driving between cities and towns meant John constantly had to change the radio. Eventually he gave up and reached blindly into the glove box, rooted around. He’d bought the car as-is from Stackhouse, who’d made no promises about the thing other than it worked and would get him to California.
No word about the previous owner, or said owner’s taste in music. A few tapes in the glove box, though.
John grabbed one and shoved it into the tape deck.
Melancholy guitar strains filled the car.
Elliott Smith. The guy was depressing as hell.
But the lyrics lodged behind John’s breastbone and stuck, twisting, clawing him open till he felt like his heart was beating for the entire world to see.
Drink up, baby, stay up all night
With the things you could do, you won't but you might
The potential you'll be that you'll never see
The promises you'll only make.
John would see his potential. And he’d keep the promises he made. He’d make so many promises, for Rodney.
Drink up with me now and forget all about
The pressure of days, do what I say
And I'll make you okay and drive them away
The images stuck in your head
There would be no pressure. Rodney would be in school, John could get a job anywhere, and he’d be there for Rodney, day in and day out. Take care of him. Make sure he was happy. Rodney made him okay, made the noise in his head quiet down, made the images and memories get unstuck and go away.
John was sure he could send a human halfway across the galaxy.
He wasn’t sure he could convince Rodney to give him another chance, but hell if he wasn’t going to try.
People you've been before that you
Don't want around anymore
That push and shove and won't bend to your will
I'll keep them still
John wasn’t the same person he’d been for so long, the swaggering kid who’d loved his mother and idolized his father and defended his father even after the old man was put away, had been willing to go down swinging to defend his father before he really understood who his father was. The kid who’d understood the truth of Patrick Sheppard hadn’t learned to play dead. He was no monster, like his father, but he was no coward.
There was no cowardice in caring, no cowardice in vulnerability. There was having the courage to take a huge risk and face the potential of great pain - or great reward.
Drink up, baby, look at the stars
I'll kiss you again, between the bars
Where I'm seeing you there, with your hands in the air
Waiting to finally be caught
John desperately hoped Rodney was waiting to be caught. He couldn’t refused to tell Ronon where he was going, what he was doing. Evan would have held Rodney’s plans in confidence had Rodney asked, because Evan was a good guy like that.
