Tuesday: Name Meanings
Aug. 2nd, 2016 01:02 amHello, all,
drabblewriter back for round two, and today's theme is name meanings. Prompts can be anything having to do with the meaning of a character's name or the concept of name meanings. Behind the Name is a good place to look them up if you need help getting started.
Just a few rules:
No more than five prompts in a row.
No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
Use the character's full names and fandom's full name for ease adding to the Lonely Prompts spreadsheet.
No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing, or use the spoiler cut option found here.
If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the above mentioned spoiler cut.
Prompts should be formatted as follows: [Use the character's full names and fandom's full name]
Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt
Some examples to get the ball rolling...
+ any, any transgender character, researching name meanings as part of choosing their new name
+ Star Trek: Enterprise, Trip Tucker, "The name's Trip - go ahead and ask if I'm clumsy, cuz I've never heard that one before."
+ Star Trek TOS or AOS, Hikaru Sulu/any, his partner uses the fact that his name means "light" as an endearment
We are now using AO3 to bookmark filled prompts. If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3 please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2016 collection. See further notes on this new option here.
Not feeling any of today’s prompts? Check out the just created Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet. For more recent prompts to write, you can also use LJ’s advanced search options to limit keyword results to only comments in this community.
While the Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet and LJ's advanced search options are available, bookmarking the links of prompts you like might work better for searching for in the future.

Date: 2016-08-02 06:03 am (UTC)Fill - Star Trek AOS, Sulu/Chekov
Date: 2016-08-31 11:34 am (UTC)"Ah, Lieutenant Sulu, good of you to join us," Kirk drawls, even though Hikaru is, in fact, two minutes early. "Late night?" He's smirking at Hikaru, and at his station Hikaru can see the tips of Pavel's ears turning red. He doesn't look displeased though - he's smiling a little, seemingly involuntarily - so Hikaru lets it go.
"Not especially, no," he says, settling into his chair. "Good morning, Ensign Chekov," he adds in a futile attempt to be professional.
"Good morning, sunshine," Pavel returns, grinning innocently, and Hikaru's breath catches like he's a goddamn teenager himself. Kirk starts laughing.
"Awww," he says, "you're even at the pet name stage."
"It is a literal interpretation of his name, Captain," Pavel says earnestly, swinging around to look at Kirk. He can be so sweet, it makes Hikaru's chest hurt. "Sulu means light, sir."
Kirk looks simultaneously amused and charmed by this, and instead of teasing further only says, "Alright, get to work then, Lieutenant Sunshine."
"Only he gets to call me that, Captain," he says, with a smirk of his own, and Kirk rolls his eyes fondly at them.
Hikaru sneaks a look over at Pavel, who is looking immensely pleased with himself. Hikaru's never gone in for pet names much, but he thinks he could get used to this one.

Date: 2016-08-02 06:03 am (UTC)Fill -- The Martian. "Junior"
Date: 2016-08-02 07:19 pm (UTC)Chris leans toward traditional names; he's not about to saddle his son with something trendy like Iroquois or Quonset. He's quite serious about Walter or Albert, and he's absolutely set on the middle name, although he hasn't decided whether to spell it ala Armstrong or Degrasse-Tyson.
Mark firmly vetoes "Mark Junior" as a possibility. "Are you kidding? One of me is enough!" Beth agrees that it would be a lot for a child to deal with. He's also against anything "spacey"; it's fine that he'll have a big sister named Stella, but his kid isn't going to be any variation of Mars or Ares, and no, not Herman as a tribute to Hermes.
They finally decide to wait until paternity is determined and let the sperm donor decide. Beth will have veto power, but it's easier for two to choose than three. Meanwhile, the ever-growing baby bump is referred to as "our little guy" or "your baby brother". (Stella is delighted by the prospect of a sibling; every evening at bedtime she kisses her mother's abdomen and wishes him good night.) Weeks turn into months--they're all anticipating the new arrival.
Mark finally confides his choice: Abel.
"Honey, if we ever have another boy, remind me not to call him Cain," Chris jokes.
"I like it," Beth says. "It's like an affirmation, capable, competent--like Mark."
"Not spelled the same, though," Chris points out.
"It means 'breath'," Mark looks serious, for him. "And that's a precious thing."
There's a moment of silence as the three former astronauts contemplate how sacred air is.
As with Stella's birth, labor goes quickly. This time, though, there are three of them in the delivery room. Chris has a local OB on call, but everything goes smoothly. Mark is overwhelmed; when Chris puts the baby into his arms, he just stares at it, tears on his face.
All it takes is a drop of cord blood, and the question is answered.
"You win the coin toss, buddy," Chris says to Mark. "Abel it is. Now, for a middle name, any way you spell it, Neil/Neal is nice."
Mark's eyes never leave his son's face. "No. It's a perfectly good name, but I want something that's more meaningful. Beth and I both agree; his name is Abel Christopher."

Date: 2016-08-02 06:13 am (UTC)Fill. warnings: ptsd related nightmare
Date: 2016-08-02 08:38 pm (UTC)Sometimes Nick has nightmares, Steph has witnessed the restless nights with growing trepidation, unsure if she should wake him or let him sleep through it.
Because, oh boy, did Nick have nightmares. Steph understood bad dreams, she had her own on going battle with the sandman to contend with. Her superhero gig had left untold scars, as well as triumphs. There were things that haunted her, preying upon her at her most vulnerable, her worst fears and memories playing like a sadistic slide show behind her eyelids.
Nick's though, usually ended with screaming. Followed by blind panic as he woke disoriented and scared. Steph did her best to calm him down, holding him and whispering nonsensical words of affection.
Tonight, was another one of those nights and Steph finds herself once again watching Nick toss and turn. His features twist, grimacing as if in pain.
"...Nick?" she calls gently, "Nick?"
He continues to writhe, hands fisting the sheets.
"Nick! Wake up you're having a nightmare," She tries more forcefully.
No response.
Steph reaches for him, nudging his shoulder, "Wake up—"
Nick springs up, eyes wide and unseeing, his fist shoots out so fast Steph barely dodges it in time. Okay, waking him up. Bad idea.
"It's me! It's me!" She yells, disarming him and pinning him down to the bed.
For a second Steph thinks she's made it worse, then his thrashing stops abruptly.
"Steph?" His voice is rough and uncertain.
"Yeah," she feels him relaxing beneath her. "Are you alright?"
"Oh, god." His face crumples up in anguish.
"No, I'm fine. You're fine. We are so totally fine." She whispers.
Nick pushes her up and off of him, eyes looking wet in the dim of the room. Steph's at a loss, he's sitting ramrod straight in the bed, practically radiating Do. Not. Touch. She just wanted to make him to feel better.
"I'm sorry," she blurts out.
He takes a few calming breaths, "No. It's not your fault. Shit."
She can hear him muttering, something along the lines of, I'm the one who should be apologizing—
Then he's staring at her, tentatively offering her his hand, "C'mere."
Steph doesn't hesitate, allowing herself to be pulled into his arms. Nick hooks his chin over her shoulder when she sits comfortably between his legs, back pressed to his front.
He breathes her in, wrapping his arms around her waist. They sit in silence for a few moments, the room so quiet she can hear the clock ticking down the hall. One day she hopes Nick will tell her what terrorizes him at night. But, she knows better than to push, he'll tell her when he's ready.
She's startled when Nick lets out a choked sob, it tears at Steph's heart.
"Steph, Steph," He chants like a mantra into the crook of her neck. Holding her tight against him.
Steph places her hands over his, "I'm here. It's okay."
It's a long while before Nick stops shaking, breath falling into a more natural pace. Steph waits it out with him.
"Hey you," he says finally.
Steph smiles even though he can't see it, relief flooding her veins.
"Ready to go back to sleep, hot stuff?" She asks, giving his leg an appreciative pat.
She's feeling tired and emotionally drained.
He snorts, "If you still think I'm hot stuff after that, babe you got it bad."
As he's about to release her he presses a kiss into the crown of her hair, and says, 'I love you.'
It's said with such heartbreaking earnestness that Steph's eyes water. Swallowing past the lump in her throat, she manages a strangled, "Love you too."

Date: 2016-08-28 06:07 pm (UTC)"Purity is overrated," she said, half-leaning to get the gun. .Clint had no idea where she had pulled it from. There were precious few options, none of them helping the fact that he was desperate for her not to realize how very interested he was in just where that gun had probably come from. She grinned, leaning over perhaps more than was strictly necessary, soft parts pushing against his chest.
"Very overrated," she said, a grin on her lips that made him strongly suspect she could read his mind. "Try not to drag me down too much and maybe I'll show you just why" she said, smirking.
Within moments, the Bad Guys slammed the door, nearly taking Clint's nose, and streamed down the stairwell, assuming the agents had continued down the stairwell.
It was like shooting fish in a barrel from their position above.
"Aw,yeah"

"Okay but how wrong was Bruce's mom? I mean," Clint snorted. "It basically means willow. Like willowy"
"Wasn't there a Scottish King that went by that too?" Phil asked, despite his attempts to not be drawn into Clint's escalating joy about how his teammates either matched or didn't match their names. He rested a hand on Clint's shin unthinkingly, a tiny bit more contact.
"Uhhhh maybe?" Clint said, already on to the next name.
"So check this, the meaning of the name Steven is-"
"'Crown, laurel, wreath'" Phil supplied without thinking. Clint smirked, eyes on Phil until the agent looked up at the stare.
"What?" he asked.
"Nothing." Clint bit out. "I won't bother with Thor because duh, thunder."
"Is there a reason you're suddenly really into knowing what everyone's name means?" Phil set down coffee and report, turned towards Clint, elbow on the back of the couch.
"It's fun,Phillip." Clint said, putting his phone in his lap. "Did you know your-"
"Yes.I am aware. I have no particular fondness for horses either way"
"Now that's a pity," Clint grinned, leaning back on the arm of the couch. "Because if I was a horse I'd so want you to ride me."
"Saucy." Phil grinned, slowly leaning over Clint.
"No, I'm Man-Born-On-A-Hill but you can name me anything you like..."

Date: 2016-08-02 06:36 am (UTC)Fill: Star Trek:AOS, Spock/Leonard McCoy(pre/)+James Kirk
Date: 2016-09-28 04:54 pm (UTC)Jim's eyebrows raised over the glass of Antarian water. He and Spock had been going over the weekly ship's briefings, and crew reports had flowed into the subject of personality types, which had led to names.
"Oh, really?"
"Yes. In Terran language, it has roots in Old High German, composed of two parts meaning 'lion' and 'brave' or 'hardy'."
Spock, who had been sitting stiffly in his chair up until this point, now reached for the pitcher of the infused water and poured himself a glass. Those that didn't know him wouldn't see the gesture for the distraction, the equivalent of a nervous twitch that it was.
"And you think this is fitting?" Jim bit back a grin. "Our Bones who bitches constantly every time he has to go on an Away Party, or go anywhere near a transporter, or a missile, or God help us, a semi-open space door"
Spock swallowed the drink and in movements so minute only those who knew him, or Vulcans, well, would have noticed, sat forward with intent.
"Is it not bravery to consistently confront that which a person fears? For a person afraid of space, of travel, of the unknown dangers we face every day, to live and work in that medium must be bravery. Doctor McCoy excels in his duties, despite the challenges our chosen mission presents him, he does not allow his fears to endanger his ethics, mission or
Jim grinned, unable to hide it, even behind his glass.
"Spock if I didn't know better I'd think you were bragging on him."
"Bragging is illogical, Captain. I was merely stating the facts of the Doctor's innate capacity to overcome fear, excel in his duties and maintain his position as a respected member of the crew." If Spock's fingertips gripped the glass a bit more tightly, his chest a fraction of an inch puffed out, humans' vision was not that acute, nor James Kirk that attentive, he told himself.
"And yet you've done it again. If you were human I'd accuse you of hero worship. Or a crush" Jim's grin grew wider.
"But I am not."
"You're half. Speaking of that half-blood of yours, I think you're due in Sickbay. Everyone else who went down to Selenim Five has had their post-mission check. You're up."
Jim saw the tiny, tiny curl of Spock's mouth, a blink-and-you-would miss it hint of a smile. He turned away so that Spock wouldn't know he saw. He saw so much more than either Spock or Bones knew.
