Thursday: Change 1 Thing
Aug. 18th, 2016 02:00 amHello, everyone. I’m
ohmcgee and today's theme is Change One Thing. Prompts can be whatever you like, but in them you'll just pick one thing to change, like with an au. Examples below.
Just a few rules:
No more than five prompts in a row.
No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
Use the character's full names and fandom's full name for ease adding to the Lonely Prompts spreadsheet.
No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing, or use the spoiler cut option found here.
If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the spoiler cut.
If there are possible triggers in your story, please warn for them in the subject line!
Prompts should be formatted as follows: [Use the character's full names and fandom's full name]
Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt
Some examples to get the ball rolling...
Batman (comics), Bruce Wayne/Harvey Dent, Bruce's parents never died
Kingsman: Secret Service: Eggsy Unwin/Harry Hart, Eggsy's dad never joined Kingsman
Hamilton, Alexander Hamilton/Aaron Burr, instead of having an affair with Maria, it's Burr.
We use AO3 to bookmark filled prompts. If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3 please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2016 collection. See further notes on this new option here.
Not feeling any of today’s prompts? Check out Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet 1 (not very current), Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet 2, or the Calendar Archives, or for more recent prompts, you can use LJ's advanced search options to find prompts to request and/or fill.
While the Lonely Prompts Spreadsheets and LJ's advanced search options are available, bookmarking the links of prompts you like might work better for searching for in the future.

Date: 2016-09-29 07:31 pm (UTC)"I - I've only been a wizard for two days - how can greatness be mine?" Harry asked, uncertainly.
"You have always had magic in you, Boy Who Lived, it was simply hidden from you - suppressed, or oppressed. As a Slytherin, such oppression will never trouble you again," the Hat whispered, as it had to an unsure orphan Tom Riddle, decades earlier.
"Slytherin, then," said Harry.
Harry's Head of House was distant, indifferent toward him, but did approve placing the excellent Seeker in the Quidditch team - any method to keep the Quidditch House Cup in Slytherin was welcome in his eyes.
When the Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher noticed Harry's proficiency in his classes, he gave the lad permission to use the Forbidden Section of the Library, for whatever research piqued his interest (hoping that he would become more receptive to the Dark Lord's wishes through exposure to the Forbidden Magics).
When the end-of-year examinations came around, Professor Quirrell demanded to examine each First-Year alone. When Harry saw what lay beneath Quirrell's turban he automatically shot an incapacitating-and-binding combination spell (work that usually only students who had passed their O.W.L.s could manage) and raced to fetch his Head of House. Snape dealt with the Thing that had corrupted Quirrell, and gave his student a top grade.
When the Diary of Tom Riddle came into Harry's possession, the boy and the diary became friends. The diary instructed Harry in the exceptional performing of forbidden magics, and Harry outperformed Gilderoy Lockhart at DADA classes, much to the teacher-author's annoyance (not to mention the Head of House's annoyance). When the diary pointed Harry in the direction of a secret in the sewers, the unkowing Parselmouth was able to control the Basilisk and made it his pet. Second year for Slythering Harry Potter was otherwise uneventful.
When word came to Hogwarts about Sirius Black's breakout, Severus Snape decided to bring his Quidditch Team's Star Seeker under his wing, and explain about the Black-Potter connection, while also driving a wedge between the boy and the lycanthrope that Dumbledore took on as Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. The boy's skill at casting a Patronus came in useful, keeping Dementors away from the Slytherin common room - something about the dungeon seemed to draw them like moths to a candle.
When Harry Potter's name came out of the Goblet of Fire in his fourth year, the whole school turned on him, driving him more and more to spend time alone, reading in the Library's Forbidden Section.
The Head of Slytherin was his sole ally, refusing to openly assist the Fourth-Year in the Tasks, (telling Potter to follow the Groundskeeper in his Invisibility Cloak was no more than the other Heads did, and thus justifiable), but more than willing to see glory for his House reflected in Potter's success. Potter won alone, with no friends, nobody cheering for him, and nobody expecting him to even survive.
The Dark Lord was most surprised to discover during his duel with Potter that the Boy Who Lived had learned Avada Kedavra, and Harry Potter returned to Hogwarts triumphant in the Triwizard Tournament, and with the corpse of Voldemort in tow.
Severus Snape Awarded Potter infinite points for Slytherin for the remainder of his years in education.

Date: 2016-08-18 02:42 pm (UTC)"Good thing they didn't make you actually do anything in there," a voice says from behind him. Steve knows it's Bucky only when there's warm hands helping him up, and he can shake his head to clear the ringing, though things are still a bit wavery if he tries to look at any one point. "They might change their minds if they could see you now."
"I'd try again, until someone took me," Steve says. Bucky laughs. He yanks on the papers until Steve lets them go.
"Of course you would," he says. "Looks like we're reporting at the same time. Think we'll get to go to the front together?"
"'Til the end of the line," Steve says. Bucky always says it to him, after all; that's how they are. "They'd have to tie me up in a sack to stop me coming after your arse if they split us up."
"We'll have to make sure that doesn't happen," Bucky says. Steve likes the next part; he always likes when Bucky slings an arm around his waist and pulls him along, making walking effortless, as if Bucky is his gravity and he's falling, all the time. "But first, we gotta get some ice for the shiner you're going to have."
~*~
Steve doesn't like basic training much. The only person who really talks to him is Bucky; everyone else is excited about reps and weights and how many people they will kill. Steve has to remind himself why he's there, every day, or he'd be one of the ones who disappears.
At least, he assumes that's where they go.
Some of the ones who left were like Bucky; perfect marks in something, the right amount of enthusiastic, friendly to everyone and respectful to the right people. Steve tries, but he isn't like that, and it shows. Bucky's pulled him away from more than one accidental insubordination, and there's nothing that Steve's really good at that would distract from his blunders the way Bucky's shooting scores give him a godlike immunity to discipline.
When the Senator reviews their parade, Steve thinks the sick feeling in his stomach is because it's Bucky's turn to disappear.
Instead, the runner, a girl named Peggy, comes for him.
"Stay out of trouble without me," Bucky says, faking a smile; it doesn't reach his eyes, and that's how Steve knows that Bucky's afraid, probably has been all this time.
"I'll find you," Steve says to Bucky, as Peggy stands in the doorway. "I'll come out there and I'll find you."
~*~
Steve finds Bucky's name on the list of the missing at a nameless Allied camp in Italy.
"I can help you," Peggy says; he didn't even know she was there, too caught up in imagining Bucky's possible fates. "You're wasted here."
"Yes," Steve says. He's spent years being ferried around with dancing girls and prop guns; he'll take what he can get.
"Wait," Peggy says. "You'll have to do something for me first, and
it won't be easy for you."
"Yes," Steve says, again, as if repeating it would make her believe him. "Whatever it takes, yes."
"Well then," Peggy says. "I think you'd better escort me to Medical."
Steve doesn't look back, not even to wave goodbye.

Date: 2016-08-18 08:40 pm (UTC)They can feel the wind and the sun, can smell the fresh air and the grass, and can’t help but ponder on the unfairness that their friends will never be able to feel anything again.
They have been slaughtered in the most unhuman way, devoured by demons, betrayed by their leader, the one they trusted most.
Judeau has taken off his gloves and traces the outline of the mark that’s stuck on the back of his hand again and again, trying to find a meaning, an answer to the question WHY.
Guts clings to the huge sword he has claimed as his own, not willing to ever let go of this weapon.
Since Rickert has tended to their wounds, they haven’t made up their minds as to the ‘What now’, but seeing that other demons seem to seek them out constantly, they both know that they have to keep moving.
Judeau sighs and leans his head back until he can feel Guts’, reassuring that he’s not alone in this. He’s glad that the other warrior seems to need this closeness as much as Judeau does, for he was more of a loner before all this. In a way he still is, because Judeau knows how to be a silent companion. Silent but deadly, in no way dependent on Guts when it comes to fighting. Otherwise he wouldn’t be here.
The blonde closes his eyes and tries to keep his face from distorting painfully. ‘Who are you kidding,’ he thinks to himself. ‘You’re not here because you’re that good of a fighter. You’re here because SHE sacrificed herself to save your worthless life.’
Though he mourns the demise of all his brothers, HERS is the most devastating one.
Another thing he and Guts share, though Judeau is clever enough not to talk about it.
Instead he tries to forget for a moment. “So … what now?” he asks and notices how the other man tenses.
“We’re going to kill him,” Guts growls, and his voice vibrates through Judeau’s body.
“Alright,” he says, his soft tone in strong contrast to Guts’. “Count me in.”
The blonde smiles as he feels that Guts is also leaning his head back, pressing it almost gently against Judeau’s as if to make sure he isn’t alone, that he’s happy to have somebody left, somebody to count on, somebody to share the loss and the hatred.
“Alright,” is all Guts says to this, simply repeating, but there’s no need for any other words.
So they just sit there and savor the sun and the wind and the grass, until it’s dark again and they fight once more for their lifes (but at least side by side).

Date: 2016-08-18 04:00 pm (UTC)John lifted his head.
Lorne was standing in the doorway of the command office, his expression politely blank.
"Major?" John had expected pretty much everyone on base to leave him alone after yet another spectacular blow-up with Rodney (ostensibly over Rodney almost pulling another Arcturus, but really because John knew Rodney was hooking up with Hewston in Chem Engineering and it was really pissing John off, the way Rodney strolled into the mess hall every morning all self-satisfied, hips rolling languidly, was driving John insane).
Lorne stepped fully into the office, and the door hissed shut behind him. Right. John and Carson were the strongest gene carriers, but Lorne was a natural carrier, and for some reason the doors reacted to him like he had telekinesis.
"Sir, I just thought you should know, DADT doesn't apply to Stargate Command."
John blinked slowly. "Major -"
Lorne ducked his head. "Sir, I know what everyone thinks of me, because I've read all of SG-1's AARs, but I've discovered they come in useful. For small details. Like...how to deal with surly, uncooperative scientists. Or the fact that DADT had to be repealed in the first year of the program when SG-1 went to a planet that revolved around polyamorous and other non-conventional relationships and Dr. Jackson and then-Colonel O'Neill had to be married as part of a peace ceremony to open trade negotiations with the planet."
John's breath lodged in his chest, and he coughed. "Major -"
"I'm just saying, sir."
"Saying what?"
"What everyone else on base has wanted to say all day."
"What?"
"Why don't you just make out already?"
John's heart was pounding. "Major, what you're saying is -"
Lorne pressed a datapad into John's hands. "Just read, sir. It's enlightening." And he ducked out of the command office.
John stared down at the datapad, at the tiny print on the screen. He sighed, sank back in his chair, and started to read.
Fifteen minutes later, he decided he really liked O'Neill's writing style. It was like a spy novel. A good one.
Forty-five minutes later, John called in to Control, asked for a location on Rodney.
Fifty-five minutes later, John perched on the edge of Rodney's desk, like he always did, with a brownie he'd scavenged from the KP Marines.
"Don't think processed sugar will earn you my forgiveness."
"Not just processed sugar," John said. "How about a date?"
Rodney whipped around to look at him. "What? But -"
John leaned in, kissed him softly, and said, "Doesn't apply here."
Rodney's eyes were wide. "How do you know?"
"Lorne pointed something out in an old SG-1 AAR."
"Well, if Lorne found it." Rodney tugged John in for another kiss, and the entire science department (save Hewston) heaved a sigh of relief.
As John led Rodney out of the lab, he pretended he didn't see Zelenka hand Kusanagi some money.
