Fill: The Untamed/MZDS, post-canon, Jin Ling + Zewu-jun
Date: 2020-09-23 08:40 pm (UTC)The one-month celebration for his son was a huge deal, since the boy would become the next sect leader.
But Jin Ling needed a moment alone to process the fact that he was older now than his parents ever were, that while his wife’s parents were here to adore their precious grandchild, all he had was his cranky old uncle.
Yes, Wei Qianbei had sent a very thoughtful gift, and Wei Qianbei was his sort of uncle, and since Wei Qianbei was Hanguang-jun’s cultivation partner, Hanguang-jun was ostensibly his uncle-in-law.
But so much of Jin Ling’s family was gone. The other man he’d called uncle, Jin Guangyao was dead. So many of the men he’d looked up to were long gone.
And besides a few nurses he’d never really dared to grow attached to, he had no mother, and now -
“You’ll do fine.”
Jin Ling turned. “Zewu-jun.”
“You’ll be a fine father,” Zewu-jun said. “For all your uncles’ grumblings, your father was a fine man. And your mother - your uncles called her perfect, and they spoke honestly. Your son, the heavens willing, will be raised by two loving parents.”
And then Jin Ling thought of his Uncle Jiang, raised by a strong father but a terrifying mother, and Wei Qianbei, who’d been orphaned and then adopted but perhaps never fully accepted, not by his new mother, and Zewu-jun and Hanguang-jun, whose mother had died and whose father had left them to their uncle, and he thought maybe Zewu-jun was right.
“Tell me about my mother? No one ever will.”
Zewu-jun smiled. “I’ll tell you what I know, but I didn’t know her nearly as well as Sangdu Senshou or Wei Wuxian.”
“Uncle won’t talk about her. I’ve never asked Wei Qianbei,” Jin Ling admitted. He added, “I’m older than her, now. And my father, too.”
Zewu-jun looked surprised, and then saddened, and then wistful. “Has it been that long? I am glad it has been this long, without further conflict to mark the years.” He leaned on the railing beside Jin Ling and said, “Your mother had a sweet laugh.”

Date: 2016-08-21 01:56 pm (UTC)Ravenclaw was perfect. No one hurt Harry if he got the answer right, if he was smarter than Dudley. Professor Snape was horrible, but Professor Flitwick - the Ravenclaw head of house - was delighted. Steven organized a study group immediately. Though he didn't share his secrets - Ravenclaws rarely shared their secrets - he had access to a steady stream of treats that he handed out quite liberally during study group in the common room.
"Should we let Padma and Mandy and Lisa and the other girls study with us?" Harry asked.
Michael shook his head. He and Terry were Muggleborn, and Harry felt most comfortable with them - they knew what he was talking about when he mentioned sneaking in episodes of Doctor Who.
"Studies show that boys and girls perform better when they're educated separately," Michael said. His mum was a teacher. "If we're in classes together, at least we can do right by ourselves by studying separate."
"Is it bad if I share my notes with the girls?" Harry asked.
Michael's secret to study success was muggle notebooks - which were conveniently lined - and muggle ball point pens. They didn't go all wonky in the presence of magic like Terry's digital watch did, and they guaranteed speedy writing and neater notes. Also, Michael figured out how to spell them so any non-Ravenclaw who touched them came away with bright blue fingers. Since the notebooks never left the dormitory, no non-Ravenclaws ought to ever touch them.
"Sharing notes is your first Ravenclaw duty," Steven informed Harry loftily. Steven was pureblood and Ravenclaw back eight generations.
"All right," Harry said. "I let Padma have a go at my notes."
"Very good of you, Harry." Anthony patted Harry on the shoulder.
When a troll broke into the dungeons, Padma, who'd gone to the loo for a cry after having an awful fight with her sister, was missing when prefects tried to send them back to Ravenclaw tower.
"We have to tell her," Harry insisted.
"We should tell a prefect," Anthony said.
Steven rolled his eyes. "His parents were Gryffindors. Of course he wants to tell her."
"Well, if we're going to tell her, we ought to have a plan in case the troll shows up." Terry reached into his robe pocket and drew out a folded piece of parchment. "These are the best defensive and offensive spells I had access to as a First Year." He unfolded it
"More useful than anything Quirrell ever taught us," Anthony grumbled, peering over Terry's shoulder.
"Everyone pick one," Terry said, "and be ready to use it. Now, which loo is Padma in?"
Flitwick fainted when he saw the half-destroyed loo and the felled troll. Snape took points left and right for them disobeying instructions to return to their dormitories. Dumbledore gave them loads of points for succeeding against the troll.
"Did you notice?" Kevin asked. He was usually so quiet.
"Notice what?" Harry glanced at him.
"Snape was limping."
Harry's mind spun. "You think he tried to get past that three-headed dog we ran into on the Third Floor Corridor."
Kevin nodded.
Harry nudged Terry. "How is that song coming along?" Kevin had also been the one who researched and found the solution to getting past a three-headed dog if needs be.
Terry played the violin. "Why?"
"Because we need to find out what that dog is guarding."

Date: 2016-08-21 02:48 am (UTC)Granted, they never did need a reason to cuddle up in bed together.
(Touchy men, they were not, but at home, in their bedroom... well, they'd argue about who became a limpet, but the reality was they both liked to be entangled with the other.
Carson was the only one to ever witness it, after that planet with the sex drive device, and he wisely only ever remarked that they suited each other.
At least they both hoped he was commenting on the cuddling and not the, erm, preceding events.)
“Mmmm,” John purred, “this is nice. Could go to sleep right now.”
Rodney chuckled to himself, pressing himself back against John's chest as he did, and dragged one of John's arm around him to properly lace their fingers together. Then, smirking, he said, “Something's going to interrupt this, you realize. It's been entirely too good the last twenty-four hours.”
No one ever said the Q word in Atlantis—good was as close as any of them were comfortable getting—and John knew Rodney was right.
Still.
“Not going to stop me from sleeping on you.”
“Just as long as you know that I will throw you out of this bed if they call for me.”
“I think we established precedent for that two weeks into living together.”
John didn't need to see the smug look to know it was there on Rodney's face; his boyfriend only told him, “I warned you I had an experiment running. You're the one who thought an octopus hold would keep me from it.”
“I see how it is. I don't win against computer simulations.”
“Nope.”
A nip to the back of his neck made Rodney squawk indignantly before pulling himself from John's hold and wrestling them until Rodney could grab onto one of John's wings and stroke. Instantaneously, John groaned and gave in, growling, “Dirty pool, Rodney. Dirty pool.”
“All's fair in love and science.”

Date: 2016-08-20 02:59 pm (UTC)Dragon Age, Garrett Hawke/Fenris - "The Little Moments" (Space!AU)
Date: 2016-09-30 09:30 am (UTC)They were currently flying to deliver rare crafting materials for one of the Dalish merchants, Varathorn, whom Zevran had met during his travels. At the same time they were trying to avoid being captured by the soldiers employed by the Knight-Commander Meredith, which turned out to be a bit trickier that Garrett expected, considering that their starships had been flying suspiciously close to all the planets the Champion had been visiting.
While Garrett didn't let any of these small difficulties disrupt his plans, making sure the Champion would not be detected by anyone who wished to see them imprisoned meant that work had been prevailing over everything else.
It wasn't that Garrett hadn't been able to spend time with Fenris at all, no. They were sharing the Captain's quarters, working side by side, and Fenris' presence was an immense help to the crew and to Garrett. He just missed sleeping in, taking long showers together, visiting random planets whenever Fenris mentioned that he had heard about them but never had a chance to visit them... he couldn't wait to get back to that.
However, even if they didn't have much time for indulgence, Garrett and Fenris always found time for each other, and these little moments together were something Garrett knew he wouldn’t be able to live without. Sharing sweets Garrett knew Fenris loved, Fenris' hand on Garrett's shoulder whenever he needed reassurance, gentle, and sometimes not so gentle touches, all of it never failed to comfort Garrett, and he was grateful that Fenris was there for him.
"Hawke? Is something wrong?"
Garrett turned from the computer screen that was displaying the list of the materials they would have to buy once they reach Ferelden to see Fenris entering the computer room. He was wearing a thin, black shirt instead of his usual heavy vest, and it made Garrett smile. The fact that Fenris felt comfortable enough to take off his armor around him still made Garrett feel special.
"Everything’s fine. I've contacted Varathorn already and we should reach Ferelden in three days, so everything goes according to our plan. If we’re lucky we’ll have time to meet with Bethy and Carver, too," Garrett replied, leaning back in his chair.
"That was not what I meant and you know it. You look tired."
Fenris walked up to him and, after looking briefly at the screen of the computer, he raised one hand to tangle his fingers in Garrett's hair.
"I'm fine," Garrett closed his eyes and sighed as Fenris’ hand moved to his neck and then to one shoulder. "I just can't wait to be able to stay in bed for longer than four hours."
Fenris frowned slightly, glancing at the computer as if he wanted to turn it off just with the sheer force of his willpower. "You should take some time to rest."
"As good as that sounds, all these messages won't send themselves, Fen."
Fenris' fingers were once again running through Garrett's hair when he said: "Go to bed, Hawke. As soon as I finish adjusting our shields and lasers with Zevran, I will join you."
Garrett just grinned at that. "I like this idea a lot."
"I thought you would."

Date: 2016-08-25 03:51 am (UTC)Everyone in the infirmary stared at the little boy. Teyla knew he was really Major Lorne, but so tiny and wide-eyed, it was difficult to reconcile him with the neatly-groomed, efficient, subtly sarcastic soldier who existed to help John make Atlantis smoothly.
“Mama,” he said, tugging on Elizabeth’s sleeve.
She looked gutted.
“Where’s your daddy?” she asked.
“Doesn’t she mean who’s your daddy?” John muttered.
Heightmeyer actually kicked him in the ankle.
Evan smiled up at Ronon and said, “Daddy.”
And that was that.
“He did not acknowledge Ronon as so the last time this happened,” Teyla said.
Elizabeth swallowed hard. “How did this happen? He hasn’t been anywhere near the machine. We locked it up. We -”
“Obviously need to study it more.” Rodney looked less than pleased at having been hauled out of bed at an ungodly hour, and not even the coffee John had pressed on him seemed to make him feel better. “I’ll go look at the user manual.”
“Thank you.” Elizabeth glanced at Evan, who smiled brightly at her. “Ronon, would you -?”
Ronon opened his arms, and Evan launched himself into them. He hoisted Evan up onto his shoulders and said, “Want to go play games, or draw?”
“Draw,” Evan said. And Ronon carried him out of the infirmary.
Heightmeyer cast Elizabeth a worried look, but Elizabeth just patted Rodney on the shoulder and hurried away. Rodney finished his coffee, and John handed him a second one, and together they headed for the lab. Teyla trailed along with them, because she had nothing better to do, and did not know how she could contribute to caring for Evan.
Rodney fired up the text display on the machine and skimmed through it, sipping on his coffee and humming to himself as he read. He nearly choked on his coffee.
“What?” John asked.
Rodney sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. “Should’ve read this closer. This isn’t a user manual - it’s a warning. The machine malfunctions. Instead of giving someone a one-time vacation to their childhood, every time someone zapped by the machine stresses out, hey presto, temporary childhood again.”
“Again?” Teyla asked.
Rodney nodded.
John raised his eyebrows. “So in the middle of a crisis, we could be down a major and up a preschooler?”
“Kindergartener, more like,” Rodney said, and Teyla wondered at how the Earthers had so many classifications for the ages of their children beyond mere numbers of years lived. “But no. It’s like a migraine. Doesn’t strike till the crisis is done.”
“Lorne did just get back from stint as a POW in a Genii prison,” John murmured. “What’s this imprinting on random people as parents?”
“Not random people,” Rodney said, scanning the text further. “He imprints on the female in charge as a mother and the best male caregiver as a father.”
“Female in charge?” Teyla echoed. “So if Elizabeth were to turn temporary command over to me and go off-world and Major Lorne were to suffer acute stress, I would -”
“Be mommy? Yep.” Rodney reached out and swiped Kusanagi’s mug of coffee, which she protested with a squeak.
“How does the machine even know that?” John asked.
“It’s all built into Lorne,” Rodney said. “Whatever his stress levels are, whoever he acknowledges as the female in charge.”
“And the best caregiver?” John pressed.
“Imprinted based on who took the best care of him during his first stint as a child,” Rodney said.
First stint. Then this would happen more.
“Can we cure Lorne?” John peered at the text that Rodney was scrolling through.
