Monday: Ghosts & Hauntings
Oct. 24th, 2016 01:30 amHi! I’m
brumeier, and this week we’re rocking the prompts Halloween style! Today's theme is GHOSTS & HAUNTINGS! Prompts can be anything, so long as it involves a ghost or a haunting, however you want to interpret either.
Just a few rules:
No more than five prompts in a row.
No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
Use the character's full names and fandom's full name for ease adding to the Lonely Prompts spreadsheet.
No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing, or use the spoiler cut option found here.
If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the spoiler cut.
If there are possible triggers in your story, please warn for them in the subject line!
Prompts should be formatted as follows: [Use the character's full names and fandom's full name]
Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt
Some examples to get the ball rolling...
+ Marvel Cinematic Universe, Bucky Barnes, he’s used to moving through the world unseen, like a ghost, but now he’s finally ready to be seen
+ Stargate Atlantis, Team Sheppard, investigating an abandoned Ancient outpost that’s reportedly haunted
+ NCIS, ensemble, Ghost Hunter AU
We use AO3 to bookmark filled prompts. If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3 please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2016 collection. See further notes on this new option here.
Not feeling any of today’s prompts? Check out Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet 1 (not very current), Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet 2, or the Calendar Archives, or for more recent prompts, you can use LJ's advanced search options to find prompts to request and/or fill.
While the Lonely Prompts Spreadsheets and LJ's advanced search options are available, bookmarking the links of prompts you like might work better for searching for in the future.

“Ha, ha. Idiot.”
Rodney was sitting in a darkened, creepy room at the rear of the old house they were investigating. The house had been empty for about fifteen years and it was in terrible shape. He was surprised no-one was falling through the floors, to be honest.
The ceiling creaked over his head and Rodney shivered. He knew it was just John’s team. Evan, Ronon and Laura were stalking around the grounds before tackling the basement. All things being equal, Rodney was happy to be where he was. Even if it was getting creepier by the second.
He checked the monitors. No action on the trap cams, and the live feed from the POV cams and the handhelds that John and Evan used were showing the usual haunted-house stuff: cobwebs, shadows, furniture draped in sheets. Rodney wouldn’t have been at all surprised to a murderous doll or a ghost clanking with chains.
“John, check your levels.”
There a problem with the audio?
“No, it’s good.”
Truthfully, there was nothing wrong with John’s levels. Rodney was just concerned because it hadn’t been that long since John’s ghostly encounter in Turkey. He’d been understandably freaked out about it. Rodney’d never had any otherworldly run-ins himself. Sure, the team had come across some questionable things during their investigations, but he wasn’t a believer. Not like Kyle.
Ronon for Kyle.
Go ahead Ronon.
Found some headstones.
Rodney grimaced and checked Evan’s feed. Yup. There they were, lit up by the night vision lenses. Three headstones, all overgrown with weeds and vines.
See if you can get clear shots of the engravings. We can research after.
Copy that.
There hadn’t been anything in the briefings about a cemetery, Rodney was pretty sure of that. What else was lurking in the dark to surprise them?
Something creaked in the room with Rodney as the same time something flashed past one of the trap cameras. He whipped out his flashlight and switched it on, shining it around the room. Nothing there, of course.
“Rodney for Laura. Can you check camera two? Something was moving over there.”
On it.
Rodney watched the feed until Laura’s face filled the screen. She waved at Rodney and he rolled his eyes.
Nothing here. What did you see?
“I have no idea.”
Aww, are you having –
Whatever mocking thing she’d been about to say was drowned out by the sound of multiple doors slamming shut all at once.
What the fuck?
Who’s in the house right now? Sound off!
“I’m getting the fuck out of here!”
Stand down, McKay. I’m sure there’s a reasonable –
Rodney watched as the door to his room swung open and then slammed shut again.
“Fuck that.”
Ronon for Kyle, what’s going on?
We’re coming out! We’re coming out!<i>
Laura for Kyle. There’s some weird fog rolling in out here.
Hold tight, Rodney. We’re on our way.
Rodney was already packing up his equipment, trying to keep one eye on the door while he did so. The next time it opened John was coming through it and Rodney let out a relieved breath.
“Leave it and let’s go,” John said. “We’ll come back for it in the morning.”
“I’m not just leaving it here! This equipment is very sensitive.”
The door slammed three times in succession. John and Rodney shared a wide-eyed look of fear.
“It’ll be fine,” Rodney agreed. “Let’s go.”
There were very few investigations that the MU team didn’t finish, but Silverwood House was one of them.

John wandered over to the wall and began prodding at it, wondering if there was a secret catch. He could find nothing and when he ran his hand down the wall to test the surface he only grazed his palm.
“Right,” Sherlock said. “I now understand how it happens.” With that he headed straight at the wall and disappeared.
“Great!” John said. “It was too much to hope you would tell me how to do it.”

Date: 2016-10-24 04:57 pm (UTC)"I'm sorry, run that by me again?"
Rodney looked up at her. He was on his back, poking underneath an Ancient control console in a lab Lorne's Marines had located during a regular city exploration mission.
"I think I almost have this online," Rodney said. "Grodin had a surprisingly useful suggestion about using a control crystal from a door control to get the console to initialize."
Peter Grodin was dead, had died during the Wraith siege at the end of the first year of the expedition. Unless there was someone else on the expedition named Grodin. Sam was pretty sure there wasn't. She'd gone to great lengths to learn everyone's names while shipping over on the Daedalus.
"Excellent work, Rodney," Sam said.
"I always do excellent work," Rodney snapped, and then aside, to someone Sam couldn't see (someone who wasn't there), "yes, I heard you the first time. Go - go drink some tea or whatever it is you do when you're not harassing the living."
Was Rodney insane? Only Sam walked past AR-3's unofficially designated rec room once, saw Major Lorne wearing civvies and kicking his feet up on an Ancient coffee table, sketchbook on his knees. He was laughing and talking to - empty air. Only he referred to his invisible conversation partners as Walker and Stevens, both of whom had died while attempting to retrieve Iratus eggs to help cure the mutating Colonel Sheppard during the second year of the Expedition.
Sam didn't understand it until Dr. Heightmeyer was killed by the alien entity that had been taking over various expedition members' minds, driving them to kill or commit suicide. One moment she was standing on the balcony from which Heightmeyer had flung herself. The next Kate was standing beside her, translucent, shaking her limbs out.
"Well," Kate said, "I always knew this would happen, but having it happen is totally different. Colonel Carter, I have a few recommendations for who should replace me -"
And Sam realized. No one on Atlantis was crazy. The city itself was crazy, preserving the souls of dead people, to keep them alongside the living.
No wonder Sheppard was sure Ford wasn't dead, though. No one had seen him in the city.
Sam wondered what it meant, that no one had seen Weir in the city either.

Date: 2016-10-24 09:34 pm (UTC)Jed had always hear that the White House was haunted by previous occupants but he'd never believed it until one night when he was wandering around unable to sleep and he saw a figure. Curious, he followed the shape through the building leading to the south east corner, now known as the Lincoln bedroom. For once it was unoccupied so he went through and sat down on one of the wing chairs. Being a history geek, he knew this was once Lincoln’s offices and cabinet room.
Looking around he had no idea why he was lead here, until the figure sat across from him. Now he knew he was looking at the ghost of Abraham Lincoln. He knew he should be surprised but in all his years at the White House, not much surprised him anymore. So instead of being freaked out, he calmly asked, “What’s next?” It was a typical question for him, but he really wanted to know what was next. Why he'd been lead here.
There was no real answer. They just talked. About the past, the history that Lincoln had been a part of and now, what was going on in the world. How things had come to be and where things might be headed. Their views similar but also different and through his conversation with the ghost of President Lincoln he found that answer that had been keeping him awake. As soon as he realized what he needed to do the ghostly aberration disappeared and he was left sitting alone. Standing up he made his way back toward his own bedroom. He wished he could tell someone of his conversation. Leo would look at him like he'd lost his mind, and maybe he had. Abby would think he was dreaming, having fallen asleep in the chair after he'd been roaming the building , while he ruminated on his current problem. No this was for him and him alone.
Crawling into bed, he pulled Abby closer, hearing her murmur in her sleep, he let himself drift off, knowing tomorrow he'd be meeting with his team and putting the plans he'd made tonight into place.

Date: 2016-10-24 05:39 pm (UTC)("More than he deserved" John had said. Molly had agreed. Sherlock had been silent on the subject.)
He saw the body go into the ground. It, the grand Game, was over.
So why didn't it feel over? Why did his skin itch whenever he passed by St. Bart's? Why was he even more restless then ever? Shooting Magnussen had hardly even jolted his adrenaline. The drugs didn't help either, they only made it easier to believe in ghosts, to coerce his rational mind into coming up with scenarios where James Moriarty faked not only his death, but his own burial as well, and then one day there would be a text with a stupid emoji and the words "wanna play?"
Somewhere, he knew, Jim Moriarty was grinning grimly at the disheveled detective, only now he was truly ghost that he always tried to be. And he still taunted-and haunted-Sherlock Holmes.
