[identity profile] dreammaidenn.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] comment_fic
Hello, I’m [livejournal.com profile] dreammaidenn and I've been having fun being your host this week.🙂 Today's theme is Time⏰. Feel free to interpret the theme in any way you want. Happy prompting and writing!

Just a few rules:
No more than five prompts in a row.
No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
Use the character's full names and fandom's full name for ease adding to the Lonely Prompts spreadsheet.
No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing, or use the spoiler cut option found here.
If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the spoiler cut.
If there are possible triggers in your story, please warn for them in the subject line!

Prompts should be formatted as follows: [Use the character's full names and fandom's full name]
Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt

Some examples to get the ball rolling...
+ Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, she kept the Time-Turner.
+ The Mortal Instruments, Alec Lightwood/Magnus Bane, living with forever looming over.
+ Sense8, Any, their future is uncertain.

We use AO3 to bookmark filled prompts. If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3 please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2017 collection. See further notes on this new option here.

Not feeling any of today’s prompts? Check out Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet 1 (not very current), Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet 2, or the Calendar Archives, or for more recent prompts, you can use LJ's advanced search options to find prompts to request and/or fill.

While the Lonely Prompts Spreadsheets and LJ's advanced search options are available, bookmarking the links of prompts you like might work better for searching for in the future.

It used to be that every day was borrowed time for them. Every minute was a risk of losing their friends, their families, their lovers, their lives.
That time had passed. The three of them were ghosts now. They'd left their lives behind and had nothing left to lose.

It used to be that every parting smile was a tinged with worry; that the breath you take at the start of every mission could very well be your last. Every kill, another minute of safety they'd taken back for themselves.
Now, they didn't smile and every kill was an attempt to fight for a world they couldn't abandon, even as it had abandoned them.

It used to be that family was relief, and safety, and trust. They had been that for each other.
Now, all that family meant was pain, and grief, and broken memories.

Some things hadn't changed.
She still couldn't sleep.
He still broke his promises.
He was still trying to numb the pain.

But they didn't live on borrowed time anymore.

They had all the time in the world.

And they were damn well going to do something with it.

Rodney, as John remembered him, was snappish but loyal and unfailingly protective of those around him. His eyes would sparkle with every new piece of tech that was revealed; he'd lick his lips greedily when he was in the presence of a ZPM, and John would always have to stop himself from stealing kisses in those moments.

His first Rodney had been heavier, hungrier, and turned into one hell of a runner after joining AR-1. John had teased him mercilessly at it all, only to have Rodney retort about John's early-days death wishes and his obsession with turkey sandwiches.

This Rodney wouldn't be able to do the same: he was blind, those once-gorgeous blue eyes lost in a haze of white, and as thin as John, with scarring over his face and torso. He was well-muscled, admittedly, but he'd been a prisoner of the Ori during the height of the war and had never regained both the weight and the hunger he'd had before.

He had also lost his John only days into their captivity.

(Atlantis whispered to John, Be careful. He is cauti and with reason.

Well aware, thanks.

Asinorum.)

It was part of the reason it'd taken him so long to finally close the distance between them; he'd bridged himself with Elizabeth, with Jeannie, with Radek and Carson, and would soon with Teyla and Ronon, but Rodney he'd fled from.

Now he'd finally built up his courage and stood, shuffling from foot to foot and back, in front of Rodney's door. He'd yet to ring the bell, but he knew that Rodney was well aware of who was lingering beyond it.

And when the door slid open, John was unsurprised to find Rodney's large German Sheppard Dog sitting primly before him. Major sniffed the air and looked back at Rodney, whining at the man, and John hoped it meant he'd passed whatever test the dog had for letting people close to his master.

He got the answer when Rodney told him, “You better come inside before a rumor starts,” the words only slightly slurred.

“I thought the rumors already started.”

“Just get in here.”

He went then, a little bit on autopilot as memories flooded through his mind: this, once upon a time, had been their room.

Silently, the pair moved from foyer to balcony, Atlantis ever so helpfully reminding him to stay away from the railing he'd once hung from during a Wraith incursion. The pair of loungers out there were, thankfully, nothing like the couch they'd kept for nights when the walls felt they were closing in and they'd slept outside with the ocean as white noise.

There was still nothing said once they were seated, the awkwardness between them palpable, until John could no longer take it and said, “I should have brought beer.”

“What beer? You have beer? How did you get beer?”

“I have my ways.”

Rodney snorted at that. “You always do,” he remarked, then seemed to realize what he'd said and closed his eyes. When he opened them again, he said, “I thought it would get easier after a few weeks.”

“Yeah.”

“I dealt with losing him. I grieved.” John nodded, but said nothing and Rodney added, “So did you, I know.”

Blowing out a breath, John murmured, “Yeah,” and then, “Brings it all back, though.”

“It does.” Rodney turned his face into the breeze, one hand absently dipping to stroke over Major's fur. “Everything.”

He didn't know why he did it, but John told him, “I'm sorry,” and Rodney told him, “Don't be stupid. You didn't kill him and you didn't expect this.”

“No. I didn't. But I hoped like hell that you'd be here when I came out of that icebox.” Another few moments, then John went on, “We're not the same guys we remember. You're not as stubborn and I'm... well, I am not the guy who was fighting Ori with ha'taks.”

“So?”

“So we're actually meeting for the first time, aren't we? I know your name, I think, but not anything else. Hell, I don't even know if you're still allergic to lemon...”

Rodney's eyebrow went up. “Lemon?”

“My Rodney would go into anaphylaxis at the sight of one”

“I see.”

A minute passed, and, hesitantly, Rodney stuck his hand toward John; he held it there, waiting, until John took it. “Pleased to meet you. Rodney Ingram McKay.”

“John Sheppard. Likewise.”

LOL, I'm pretty sure at least 90% of the fics I've written for this pairing that involve other characters involve those other characters going "Well, it's about time!" or some variation thereof when they learn that Steve and Danny are together. If I decided to fill this, I would have to find a way to make that phrase fresh somehow.

The Last Unicorn, author's choice, one last time

Cordelia worried about her father, long after Regan and Goneril had stopped. He was unwell, and his mind was gone more than it was present. Some nights Cordelia couldn't sleep, and so she roamed the halls of the castle, wondering. Fretting.

She pause by her father's chambers to make sure he still breathed in his sleep - but he was gone.

Panic fluttered in Cordelia's chest, and immediately she knew where he would be. On the balcony, watching the sea, gazing up his imaginary unicorns. She gathered up her skirts and hurried through the cold stone halls to the balcony.

Father leaned on the railing, shoulders hunched and stooped. He looked so old, so frail. Had he fallen asleep standing up? Cordelia crept onto the balcony, and then she stopped.

Stared.

There, out on the waves, was a single unicorn. For a moment Cordelia had mistaken the creature for the foam crest of a wave or moonlight, but - no.

A unicorn.

Father was right. They weren't like horses.

Cordelia watched as the unicorn rode the wave up to the shore, stared in awe as it trotted up the sand toward the castle. The unicorn was breathtaking, was beautiful, was -

A girl. Had transformed into a human girl, clad in moonlight and nothing more, silvery hair tumbling gloriously over her shoulders.

Father straightened up, eyes wide. "Amalthea," he breathed.

Amalthea was real. All this time, Cordelia had assumed she was a figment of his fading mind. She let out a little cry as Father spun on his heel and swept past her.

When was the last time he'd moved with such purpose?

"Father," Cordelia said, chasing after him, but he didn't seem to know she was there. Was he lost in madness? Hallucinating? But Cordelia had seen what she had seen, the unicorn on the sea who turned into a woman on the shore. Were all unicorns thus?

Father made for the old armory, and Cordelia's heart clenched. Was he going to slay the unicorn? But he flung open one of the chests and drew out - a pale dress, soft and silky and glowing like moonlight. Then he headed for the stairs, and Cordelia followed, tripping and stumbling like the rhythm of her worried heart.

The palace guards were asleep, slumped over as Cordelia dogged her father's heels all the way down to the front doors of the keep, across the courtyard and drawbridge, down the steep steps to the sea.

The pale woman met him at the bottom of the sand.

"Lir," she said, her voice as soft as velvet, as bright as the stars.

"Amalthea," he said, and held out the gown.

She pulled it on unselfconsciously, and then she stepped into the circle of Father's arms.

And they danced.

Cordelia had never seen her Father dance thus, standing straight and tall, shoulders strong, leading powerfully but gentle with his embrace, sure with his hands.

In this, she knew she was seeing, for the last time, the King Lir of old, who'd helped defeat the Red Bull, who'd slain a griffin, who'd protected the kingdom for over half a century.

Who'd won the heart of a unicorn.

Cordelia couldn't bear to watch the beauty and impossibility of the moment any longer and, eyes brimming with tears, stumbled back up the steps and into the castle.

She knew, when she woke in the morning, that her father would be gone.
