"You don't have to do this."

That's hardly the first thing that a man wants to hear when he's down on one knee holding a ring box in one hand, and when it's accompanied by the speaker standing and walking away from him, Joe can't even pretend he understands what's going on.

Well, the what he understands perfectly well. It's the why that's got him stumped.

There are a dozen questions that are on the tip of his tongue: he keeps them all back. Instead he stands slowly, crosses the room to stand in front of Caitlin. She doesn't move away and he takes that as a good thing, but she doesn't meet his eyes either. "Cait?"

Her lips press together into a thin line and she shakes her head. "You don't have to do this," she says again. Her eyes flick to his face, move away just as quickly. It's still long enough for him to see the pain there. "I know shotgun marriages were acceptable in the eighties but..."

"You think that's what this is?" He's surprised enough to cut across her and she's surprised enough that she looks up at him with wide eyes.

"Isn't it?"

"No." She blinks but he doesn't, reaches out and takes her hand in his. "Sweetheart, I got this ring weeks ago. Before you told me." Before he'd come home to find her sitting on their bed, her hands balled into white knuckled fists, her face pale and her eyes red and he'd suddenly found himself almost thirty years in the past, watching Francine with the exact same expression on her face as she'd said the exact same words. Back then, her daddy and his momma had told him what he had to do, what he would have done anyway. Here, now, there was none of that, not when he'd been planning for it already.

"You did?" Her eyes are filled with suspicion but, if he knows Caitlin, there's the tiniest bit of hope there too.

"Ask Barry if you don't believe me." Because Joe had talked to him about it, asked him how he thought Iris would react. Barry had just grinned and hugged him and recommended the jeweller that had sold him Iris's ring. "Caitlin, I want to marry you... baby or no baby."

She stares into his eyes for the longest twenty seconds of his life before a smile breaks over her face and he feels an answering one cross his own lips. "Is that a yes?" he asks and she nods, tears in her eyes as she says the only thing he wants to hear.

"Yes."

The Asset moves to the window and looks outside, hoping to get a visual on his contact. Things have been crazy these past few days. After the accidentally too early announcement on TV, about the opening of the borders, all hell had broken loose. People had gathered at the turnpike at Bornholmer Straße to take their first steps towards West Berlin, towards freedom.

That was four days ago and things have deteriorated since then. Nothing is going according to plan and the Asset knows that his handlers will be most displeased with him. There are Stasi files and information he desperately needs, information he is supposed to deliver but instead he is stuck in one of the many abandoned apartments.

Well, not completely abandoned, as the sniffling coming from one corner of his hideout reminds him. The boy is four, maybe five, with blond hair and blue eyes. There is another one somewhere in the tiny apartment, he’s older – seven maybe – but the Asset doesn’t care. They are not important. There are dozens of them all over the town – abandoned children whose parents wanted to start a new life in the west without them.

“Ich habe Hunger. Gibst du mir was zu essen?” the boy sounds terrified, but the dried tear tracks on his pale face cause no reaction in the Asset. The children are of no consequence. As long as they don’t give away his position, he will not have to terminate them.

“Komm, ich hab noch ein Ei gefunden, das kannst du haben,” the other boy appears in the doorway and holds out his hand for his little brother to take. The Asset doesn’t pay any more attention to them. Someone will find them, eventually, after he left. Someone will answer the younger one’s never-ending question of “wann kommt Mama wieder?” Maybe they will even tell him the truth.

The Asset doesn’t care. The border that separated East and West Berlin might be gone, the wall being torn down, but the Asset’s problems have just begun.

“I’m hungry. Will you give me something to eat?”
“Come, I’ve found an egg. You can have it.”
“When will mom come back?”

Heartbreaking enough, seeing how little the Asset cares about the children he's sharing space with. But to learn about all the children who were abandoned after the wall fell...ugh, so horrible!

All the feels with this one!

Thanks. *hugs* Sorry I didn't write the happy story that prompt COULD have produced. I surprised myself a bit with this, but that is the story that wanted to be told. Nothing I could do about it. You know how that goes.

No, the Asset doesn't care, unfortunately. Bucky would have, but he's not in control.

Thank you. You're right. Bucky would have cared about these children. The Asset doesn't. Unfortunately he is just one more person who doesn't care, leaving the little ones to fend for themselves. After the wall fell the children's homes were overflowing with traumatized, abandoned children no one wanted any more. It's heartbreaking, really.

Sorry I wasn't inspired to write something happier. Somehow I always end up focusing on the things that usually are left unsaid. In theory I could just have written a happy story about gaining freedom ...

No, no, the things that are unsaid often need light shed on them. A friend of mine just did a Master's in German history all about how people remember the East-West divide and the fall of the WAll, and the scary thing is, a lot of them seem to remember it fondly, even the Stasi, and that's just... I don't even want to go there in today's political climate. These things are *worth* remembering, and if that's what your Muses point you towards, then that's what you do.

Oh, but this hit me right between the eyes. So, so sad, but parents will sometimes be unbelievably selfish. Bucky and The Asset really are two different creatures. So frightening, to think what Hydra can do inside someone's head. Well-written!

Thank you. Yes, Bucky and the Asset are certainly very different. And yes, these parents were selfish. According to reports from a few years back when people talked to the children from back then who are now adults, the fear of abandonment never really goes away. It's sad, really.

Yeah. Often without a lot of professional intervention, traumatic childhood abandonment has lifelong effects. You did this so well, though.

Thank you. There was a report about three boys who were abandoned by their mother, aged 7, 5 and barely 3. They asked the five year old if he knew where his mother is and he said: "Yes, she is in West Berlin. I'm all alone now. She's never coming back." I remember watching this a couple of years ago for the first time and it made me cry so hard. Still does. My son is five. He's the most cuddly, clingy little guy. After watching this report again *I* needed a hug. I think I clung to him for fifteen minutes. I can't imagine the pain these kids went through just because their parents are assholes who thought their children would be a hindrance in their new life.
