From the moment he first laid eyes on the handsome cowboy, Andrej knew he was in trouble. If a headful of messy, dark hair, brilliant green eyes, and skin the color of molten caramel hadn’t been enough to draw him in, that sensual, pouty smile would have sealed his fate. As it was, the moment Reyes opened his mouth and that beautiful south Texas drawl fell out, Andrej was lost.

That first meeting had been a long time ago, too long if you asked Andrej. Each day they spent as partners his initial lustful desire had grown into something more. Something resembling true affection for a man he’d never be able to have. Andrej hated himself for falling this damn hard for a straight man – one who happened to be his partner on top of being happily hetero. It wasn’t a pleasant way to live his life but then… he did get to spend his days close to the most handsome and infuriating man he’d ever known.

Okay, so maybe this wasn’t an ideal situation, but it was what it was and he’d learned to deal with it over the years. Andrej looked up from the file on his desk and discreetly observed Zayne hitting on one of the new female patrol officers. The man was an incurable flirt and it made Andrej’s heart ache to know he’d never be on the receiving end of all that charisma. At least, not in this context anyway. Zayne was notorious for turning up the charm anytime he was in need of a favor, but that was something completely different and impersonal.

“Hah,” Zayne said, flopping down into his desk chair. “I got her number. Said she’d like to go out on Friday night.”

“Wonderful,” Andrej muttered forcing his eyes back onto the case he’d been reading up on.

“You should grab your girl and come with us,” Zayne said.

Andrej didn’t have a girl and never would, not that he planned on ever telling Reyes that. It would only complicate things more than they already were. At least he didn’t have to worry about his partner hating him for his sexuality. To the contrary, Zayne seemed fascinated by their fellow detective, Trish Rollins, who made no bones about the fact she preferred women to men. He briefly wondered how Zayne would feel if he showed up to the date with his friend Elias in tow. “I do not think that would be a good idea, Zayne.”

Frowning, Zayne opened a drawer and pulled out a package of chocolate candies and tossed them onto Andrej’s desk. “Here, you look like you could use a little sugar.”

The corner of Andrej’s mouth tried to rise in a smile. Hell yes he could use a little sugar, Andrej thought. A kiss or twelve would do him a lot of good right then. The realization that he’d never be kissed by this gorgeous man killed the smile fighting to lift his face. He pulled the bag of M&Ms towards him and tore off a corner. “Thank you. Would you like a few?”

“Naw, man,” Zayne said, waving a hand at his partner. “You enjoy them, I’ve gotta watch my girlish figure.” He waggled his eyebrows and Andrej felt his stomach sink. Another pretty woman walked through their squad room and Zayne’s eyes widened. “Excuse me, I need to go find out who she is. Yanno, just in case it doesn’t work out with this other girl.”

Andrej watched Zayne hot foot it over to the newcomer and sighed. Looking at the open bag of candy on his desk, he picked up the package and dumped half its contents into his hand. They all went into his mouth at once.
