Any, any, it's one thing to shop for furniture, but trying to assemble thing is an exercise in frustration.
From: [identity profile] geckogirl89.livejournal.com
(Future fic with established Steve/Danny. Also, I have the maturity of a 12-year-old, so there's some very mild innuendo regarding dowels and connector parts. Hope you enjoy.)

It was the week before Grace started her junior year of college, and Steve and Danno were helping her move into her first apartment. For her first two years at the University of Hawaii, she had lived in the campus dorms with a roommate, but this year, she had wanted to live in an apartment. It would help her get used to living on her own after she graduated.

The day had been rather long for the group, as they had needed to move a lot of stuff and buy new furniture for her apartment. Assembling the futon that would go in her living room was their last task of the day, and it had been surprisingly difficult. To both Steve and Grace's consternation, Danno had been a stereotypical man and had thrown away the instructions because he believed that putting together the futon would be a "piece of cake." Steve and Grace had inevitably been roped into helping Danny with the futon, but they weren't having much luck.

Danny stared was currently staring at a small part connector part. "I can't find the doohickey that goes with this thing."

Steve barely glanced at Danny before rolling his eyes and handing over a wooden dowel. "Here. This ought to work."

Grace winced when she saw this exchange. She looked at the two parts in Danno's hand and knew that they didn't go together. She waited to see how Danno would react to this.

He didn't disappoint her. "Steven, are you nuts? There's no way that this thing is going to fit in this other thing." He gestured with the two parts to emphasize his point.

The effect was completely lost on Steve, who scoffed. "It'll fit just fine. Just, y'know, push it in a little."

Push it in. Grace pursed her lips to contain a laugh. If she wasn't in the room with them, it wouldn't have sounded to her like her dads was talking about something as innocent as furniture.

"Push it in?! Have you completely lost your mind? You can't do that! If you try, you're gonna break something!"

Grace couldn't help it. It started with a snigger, and then it turned into giggles that made tears pour out of her eyes. She had to lean against the wall behind her for support. Her dads were being even more ridiculous than usual.

Eventually, she was able to calm down a little and opened her eyes, which had closed during her laughing fit. Her heart melted when she saw two faces gazing at her with identical looks of concern. Grace was lucky to have two dads who cared about her so much. Most people only got one, if that.

And it definitely brought a lot of entertainment to her life, especially when they were being a matching pair of idiots, like they had been that day.

She smirked and shook her head at the two of them. "Danno, you probably shouldn't yell like that. My neighbors might end up thinking they know way too much about you and Dad's sex life."

Danno took a few seconds to process what she said, and Grace rolled her eyes when she saw him get all pale and look like his eyes were about to bug out of his head. He seemed shocked that she had referred to sex so casually, but he shouldn't have been. Grace was an adult now, but her Danno seemed to forget that a lot of the time.

She turned her attention to her other father and felt some pity for him when she saw how embarrassed he was. Steve was blushing heavily, and he couldn't seem to meet her or Danny's eyes. His gaze was focused instead on her new floorboards.

She plucked the connecter part and dowel out of Danno's frozen hands. "Dad?" she said gently.

Steve glanced up at her, and Grace smiled at him. "Maybe you ought to look before you hand stuff over, because Danno was right." She opened his palm and dropped the two pieces into his hand. "There's no way that dowel would have fit."

Steve glanced down at his palm and nodded. She knew he would agree when he actually looked at the two items together. The dowel was about twice as big as the opening of the connector part.

Grace turned, satisfied that she had made her point, and looked out at the parts spread out on the floor.

The stranger rides into Duke City on a thin chestnut horse, both of them dusty from weeks on the trail. He doesn’t stop for chow, or turn in at the livery stable, but meanders until he reaches a lot where a building with a steeple is under construction.

Children are playing tag in the open field. The rider sits his horse, listening for one particular laugh. When it rings out, he smiles.

Dismounting, he stands watching the game. Presently, one of the girls squeals and runs directly to the rider. Reaching him, she flings her arms around him, then hastily draws back. “Phew! Papa, you stink!”

“Like an old bear after a long winter,” he agrees. “Once I get Bayonne stabled, I’m going to get new clothes and take a bath.”

The girl reaches out and strokes the horse’s muzzle. They’ve been friends for most of her nine years. She looks up at her father, smiling.

He clears his throat. “How’s your mother?”

“I don’t know,” Grace says after a moment. “She was awfully thin by the time we got here--we all were--but at first she was happy and making plans for the parsonnage. And then she started getting sick a lot and staying in bed until noon.”

Her father nods sagely. “And Stanley? They’re getting along?”

“Mr. Edwards is very good to us! A lot of the time, when we were on the trail, he’d take the smallest portion so we’d have enough. He’s promised Mama a set of real china dishes when we’re settled in, and I’m to have my own pony!”

“Is there a problem here?” asks a deep voice behind them.

“No, Sheriff!” Grace glances at him. “This is my papa!”

“Go back to your game, Grace.” Her father has a strained smile. “I’ll see you again later, when I’ve cleaned up.”

“We have services here every Sunday morning--maybe you could come.”

“That certainly gives me something to look forward to” The girl scampers back to the gaggle of children, and the two men study one another.

The sheriff is half a head taller…dark hair and eyes, well-tailored clothes, including a striped red and blue vest with ivory buttons. Beyond his flashy looks, he radiates a confidence that gives the newcomer conflicting feelings. It attracts him…at the same time, it’s infuriating.

“Why does the preacher’s daughter call you ‘Papa’?”

“My name is Danny Williams, and Grace calls me Papa because I’m her father.”

“Sheriff Steve McGarrett. So you and Mrs. Edwards…?”

Danny sighs. “The truth is, Grace’s mother and I were never married. Back in Jersey, I was a carter and worked hard. I took care of my family. Then Rachel started going to Edwards’s church. He decided she was a fallen woman and he was going to save her, so her married her and dragged her--and my daughter--out here. Rachel’s a grown woman, but the first time I held Grace, I made a promise that I’d always take care of her.”

“And here you are. What are your plans now, Williams?”

“I hear there’s silver in the hills. I think that’s why Edwards came out here. He said he was ‘called’. I suspect he thought it would be a rich town and he’d get fat off the collection plate.”

The sheriff chuckles. Surprising how his whole face lightens up when he smiles. Danny feels a little shiver run through him. “I don’t advise that. Mining is a tricky business. It’s not like there are nuggets littering the ground. You’d be out there alone for long periods of time. That’s time away from your little girl, and there are a lot of claim-jumpers. You might find a rich strike and wind up robbed and dead, never heard from again.”

“Is this your way of telling me to get out of town?” Danny bristles.

“Not at all. As a matter of fact, I happen to be on the lookout for a deputy.”

“Me?”

MCGarrett smiles. That grin is deadlier than his gun, Danny thinks.

“You want this town to be a safe place for your little girl, don’t you? It pays $10 a month, free stabling for your horse, and the town provides living quarters. You’d be welcome to share them with me.”

Danny smiles back. “When do I start?”

Any, any/any, the little moments in life are just as important as the big moments

Fill: The Flash, Joe/Caitlin

Date: 2017-06-10 08:40 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] helsinkibaby.livejournal.com

Caitlin knows the second that someone has walked into STAR Labs. It's not because she hears footsteps, not because she hears someone say her name. On the contrary, she's fathoms deep in data analysis, is blind and deaf to everything around her. If her eyes and ears fail her, however, her nose is working just fine and when she takes a deep breath and the scent of a pumpkin spice latte catches her attention, her head lifts up straight away.

She spins around in her chair, regrets it when the motion almost makes her fall over. Plus, she might not have moved in literal hours so she's stiff and it actually hurts. She winces and grips onto her console at the same time and, across the room, Joe chuckles.

"Like a bloodhound," he says, crossing the room to stand in front of her.

She doesn't even bother with a proper greeting, preferring to extend her hand for the latte. "That'd better be for me."

As he hands it to her, he just gives her a look that clearly asks her who else would it be for before holding up his other hand. Her eyes widen when she sees the bag he's holding there. "I got you a muffin too," he says.

Her hand freezes in midair. "Bran and cranberry?" It's her go-to muffin and he knows that but it's not really what she's craving right now. Still, any port in a storm and all that.

Joe narrows his eyes and tilts his head, blows a breath of air out between his lips. "Please," he says and there are entire worlds of scorn in that one syllable. "After the few days you've had? Only double chocolate chip will do."

It's exactly the one she'd been longing for and she feels her face split in a smile. "I love you."

She says it and then she freezes as the words hang in the air between them. She's been aware of the feeling for a while, been able to name it for herself, if not to him, but this is the first time that she's actually said those words out loud to him. She thinks for a moment that she should have waited, that such big words deserve a big moment, some romantic dinner, after a perfect date, after a near death or end of the world experience, something they've had plenty of. It shouldn't happen like this, the place they got to know one another, the place they fell in love, when he's just been his usual thoughtful self, taking care of her, doing one of the million little things he does to make her smile.

And it hits her then, forcefully. Why should t it be during a time like that? In fact, what better time could there be?

Even as she's thinking that, a slow smile spreads across Joe's face and it warms her from the inside out. "Well, you'd better," he says, slipping an arm around her waist and pulling her close as he brushes his lips across hers. When he releases her, he rests his forehead against hers. "And by the way?" His voice is low and she wonders if he can feel the shiver that runs down her spine. "I love you too."

She grins broadly at that, gives him one more peck on the cheek before she takes the bag and turns back to her desk. "I'm not sharing this with you," she grins and he rolls his eyes as he pulls up a chair to sit beside her.

"Sweetheart, I know better than to come between you and double chocolate chip." He squints at her computer screen. "Now, what are we looking at here?"

She knows he's going to understand about one word in twenty, even fewer when they're put in context. She tells him anyway as he rests his hand on her knee and listens to her, only interrupting to ask questions and to remind her to eat and when she's finished, Caitlin feels a million times better.

After all, she's just realised that it's not just any port in a storm now. Not when she's got Joe to be her safe harbour.

From: [identity profile] jdl71.livejournal.com
Dean rolled over onto his stomach, a heavy sigh escaping his lips. It never felt like he got enough sleep. At least he was back in his bed, not some crappy motel room. He knew he should get up, but really didn't want to move.

"Dean, are you awake?" Dean's focus snapped from sleep to the voice. He practically jumped up, nearly falling off the bed, knife in hand. "Cas, what the hell are you doing, here in my room while I'm sleeping?"

Cas just cocked his head, contemplating the question. "I thought that was evident, I'm watching you sleep." Dean replaced the knife under his pillow. "Cas, that's just creepy. You don't do that to another dude." Cas just sat there, watching Dean. "Do you mind? I'd like to get dressed." With a sound of flapping wings, he was gone.

A few days went by without a repeat. Just when Dean thought Cas had gotten, whatever the hell that was out of his system, he woke to find him there. This time, sitting at the foot of his bed. Dean groaned at the sight of him.

"What are you doing? Wait, let me guess, you were watching me sleep?"

Cas just stared at Dean. "I find it soothing to watch you sleep. The steady even breath, the rise and fall of your chest. Humans, their need to sleep, dream. Angels, we don't sleep, don't have the need." With that, Cas was gone again. Dean just stared at the place where Cas had been. Shaking his head, he threw back the covers and got up.

A week went by without Dean waking to find Cas watching him. He wasn't sure if he should feel relieved or concerned at this. He laid down, closing his eyes to surrender to sleep. Sometime, in the middle of the night, he awoken to a scraping sound. He cocked an eye open, watching Cas pulling a chair over to his bed. Dean closed his eyes and rolled over. Resigned to the fact that this was his new normal, at least until the angel found something else that would fascinate him.

A/N: It's possible I didn't read the lyrics thoroughly enough before writing this, so I kinda latched on to the last two lines. Oh well.

Cordelia knocked the entire universe off course by swimming upstream through a crowd of wannabe actors and cocktail dresses to follow the sound of a familiar voice.

They muddle through together.

They fight their way, with swords and teeth and a little help from their friends, against monsters and lawyers and angry exes. They make it through Cordelia’s reign, and Angel’s firstborn, the visions, a dressing room with way too much pent-up energy, and their mutual inability to address their feelings.

Again and again, something tries to tear them down and they make it through, together.

Shouldn’t that mean something?

“I guess I just always thought you and Cordy’d… That y’all were meant to be together,” Fred says after the funeral. She plucks at the hem of her black dress with one hand and grips Angel’s hand with the other. “It just seemed right.”

And Angel still tastes her last kiss and still sees the destruction that she warned him is coming.

“Ah,” says Spike. “Destiny’s all a load of shit.”

But Angel had thought like Fred, for a while.

They’d fought.

They’d gone through so much pain and loss and hardship.

And he’d let himself think that that could mean something more than more fighting to come. Let himself think again, for a little while, that there might be some kind of reward at the end after all.

But Cordelia was never even supposed to be there.

And maybe the Powers never forgot.

Danny walked into the office and immediately saw that he was alone in the bullpen. He was about to go into his office to catch up on some paper work until he saw Steve and Kono chatting in Steve’s office and decided that giving them a friendly morning greeting wouldn’t hurt.

The door was already slightly open, so all Danny had to do was push the door open to enter Steve’s office. The door didn’t make a sound, so neither Steve nor Kono, who were intently focused on their conversation with each other, noticed him.

Kono let out a resigned sigh and rubbed her forehead. “I really think you ought to tell him.”

Steve scoffed. “Yeah, right. You know why I can’t tell Danny.”

Can’t tell Danny what? Danny’s mind immediately latched onto the worst possible conclusion, that Steve’s health had taken a downward turn since they last spoke about how he was coping with the radiation illness. Steve hadn’t seemed to get any worse, but that was the only logical conclusion Danny could think of.

Steve didn’t hide things from Danny. He just didn’t.

“Brah, I’m just saying, maybe this won’t go as bad as you think it will.”

Danny frowned. Kono’s voice sounded reassuring and optimistic, which didn’t match what Danny assumed Steve’s secret was.

Steve glared at Kono, and there was a hint of irritation in his eyes. Almost like they had gone through this argument many times before.

“Yeah, okay, let’s picture how that conversation would go. Danny, I know we’re best friends, but I’ve been in love with you for years and think about kissing you all the time. How the hell do you think Danny would respond to that?”

Danny gasped in shock and Steve and Kono turned to face him. Steve’s face turned alarmingly pale, and Kono’s gaze darted back and forth rapidly between Steve and Danny.

Kono cleared her throat awkwardly directed a pained grimace towards Steve. “I guess you’re about to find out.” She rose from her chair and walked towards the door to Steve’s office. “I’ll give you guys some privacy.” She shook her head at Danny, who was frozen like a statue and patted his shoulder, which jolted him into breathing again. And then Kono passed Danny, leaving them alone in the office.

Danny stared at Steve for several seconds, still not quite able to believe the words he had just heard despite the fact that Steve’s anxious expression confirmed that Danny hadn’t been suffering from an auditory hallucination. Maybe I’m having a really vivid dream. Danny pinched himself on the upper arm and chuckled incredulously at the sting he felt.

“Danny, what are you doing?”

“Checking that I wasn’t dreaming. I mean, you, you like me?” Jeeze, way to sound like I’m in middle school.

Steve hunched his shoulders defensively and glanced down, but that didn’t stop Danny from seeing the blush that tinted his cheeks. “Yeah but like, in a cool way. Like, I only have one feeling and it’s reserved for you.” He glanced up at Danny, misery swimming in his eyes, before he looked back at his desk like it was the most fascinating thing in the world. “But if you don’t want it, then pretend I didn’t say that.”

Danny grinned fondly. He couldn’t help himself. That response was just so quintessentially Steve, a complicated bundle of idiotic and adorable and emotionally repressed all at once. Danny’s heart filled with warmth as he watched his partner fidget uncomfortably after his confession.

Danny couldn’t help what he said next, not that he even attempted to stop himself. “God, I love you.”

Steve dropped the pen he had been toying with, and it rolled off his desk onto the floor. “Huh?”

Danny’s grin widened as he stalked closer to Steve’s desk. “You heard me. And I wasn’t planning to ignore what you said, considering that I do actually want the feeling you reserved just for me.”

Steve laughed, bright and happy. “You’re serious?”

“Yeah.” Danny shrugged sheepishly. “I mean, your whole little speech to Kono sounded identical to the internal monologue, I’ve had for—Steven, what the hell are you doing?”

A stupid question really, considering the fact that Steve had just pulled Danny directly on top of his lap. He shot Steve an annoyed glare for his caveman behavior, but he made absolutely no attempt to get away.

Any (please no SPN), anypair, Person A: *Falls asleep on B*
Person B: *Tries to awkwardly move A but A snuggles into B more*
From: [identity profile] geckogirl89.livejournal.com
(Set after 3.07 (Offspring) and before 3.13 (Waiting in the Wings). Somewhat subtexty because Angel is a pining, dorky manpire. Hope you enjoy!)

It’s not like Angel didn’t notice when Cordelia fell asleep on his shoulder. He could hear her heartbeat and breathing slow down as she drifted off to dreamland. He just didn’t feel particularly inclined to do anything about it.

For one thing, her head wasn’t especially heavy. It’s not like Angel’s arm was going to get a muscle cramp. He was a vampire, and he was far less affected by things like that than humans. And Cordelia must have been tired if she fell asleep in the middle of this movie. She had selected this film for the group’s movie night in the first place, so she obviously only fell asleep accidentally due to sheer exhaustion. It would be cruel to wake her, and doing something deliberately cruel wouldn’t be fitting for Angel’s status as a champion and hero who helped the helpless. Besides, she constantly worked to keep this place running. As Fred put it, Cordy was the heart of the group. Wasn’t she of all people entitled to a break?

It had absolutely nothing to do with Angel getting some kind of secret enjoyment from Cordy falling asleep on him, because that would be absurd. She is his friend and co-worker. It’s not like Angel was noticing the warmth or her body or how nice her hair smelled. And it’s not like he’d had numerous secret daydreams of Cordelia falling asleep on him just like this and was reluctant to do anything that might wake her since his fantasy was unexpectedly coming to life. Even if Angel did feel remarkably comfortable right now, it was in a completely platonic fashion. It had certainly nothing to do with strange (and completely inaccurate) Pylean concepts mentioned by certain Texans who shall remain nameless.

Angel reminds himself of all of these very true and verifiable facts for the thirty minutes that the rest of the film plays until the credits start to roll, simply because he likes to remind himself of obvious truths. It’s not like he’s trying to distract himself in order to stop thinking about wrapping his arm around Cordy, because that would be simply silly.

Fred yawns and stretches her arms above her head. “Boy, I’m tired.” She glances behind her, and her worn-out expression turns into a oddly devious little smirk. “I guess I’m not the only one.”

That draws the attention of everyone else. Wesley coughs into his hand in a poor attempt to smother his laughter, Lorne peers at Angel as if he was trying to read his aura, and Gunn shakes his head at the two of them.

“Yo, Angel, you gonna let Barbie fall asleep on you?”

Everyone stares at Angel expectantly, and all of the explanations he’d thought of earlier suddenly seem like flimsy excuses. Not that they actually are flimsy excuses, but Angel doesn’t think his friends will believe him.

“Of course not,” Angel says. He carefully starts to shift Cordy to the right, but she makes a disgruntled noise and clings tightly to his arm. She scoots closer until she’s nestled into his side, and that makes it pretty obvious that he shouldn’t try to move her again, right?

Angel shrugs helplessly, and the others laugh at his “predicament.”

“You’re hopeless, man,” Gunn says. He picks up the jacket he’d tossed on the arm of the couch earlier and turns to Wesley. “Need a ride home, English?”

“Yes, thank you.”

Gunn puts on his jacket and leaves with a farewell to the others in the room. Wesley follows behind him, pausing for just a second to look at Angel and Cordelia and roll his eyes at the picture they made.

Lorne yawns. “I guess it’s time for us to skedaddle off to bed, Fredikins.” He rises from his spot on the floor and ejects the DVD from the player. Fred turns the TV to a station showing an old black and white movie and hands the remote to Angel.

“Might as well get comfy, Angel.” She smiles and tilts her head to look at Cordy. “Looks like y’all will be out here for a while.”

“Yeah, yeah, laugh it up.”

Lorne puts the DVD inside its case and places it on the center of the coffee table. “Don’t worry Angel, we will.”
