“Gingersnaps.”

My gaze alternated between my daughter and the… there was no other way to describe it. The dragon on the roof. Thankfully it was a small dragon so it didn’t appear to be doing much damage. A few shingles did slide to the ground as it shifted around.

I locked my gaze on my teenager as she tried to edge away. “Gingersnaps?” I questioned. “That doesn’t explain why there’s a dragon stuck on the roof, now does it?”

“Oops?” she offered.

“Not even close. Get it down before it does even more damage.”

“But, Mom,” she whined. “I don’t even know how it got up there.”

“You need to figure out how to get it down, Melissa, not how it got up there. Or you’ll be climbing up there to feed it,” I informed her.

I moved around to the side of our house to the sound of her cries of, “That’s not fair!” to see what the neighbor thought of this.

“Do you have…?” my neighbor, John, called.

“A dragon on the roof?” I finished. “Yes, and Melissa has no idea how it happened.”

He chuckled as he joined me at the low fence that separated our properties. “Teenagers.”

“Be glad you don’t have one,” I said.

There was a crash from the front of the house and I looked up to see I no longer had a dragon on the roof. “Want me to call animal control?” John offered.

“No. I’d better go see if either of them are hurt and fend off the ‘can I keep it’s.”

“Good luck,” he called as I headed back around front.
