Hey everyone! I'm
be_themoon , guest-hosting this week. Firstly, thanks to
monica_catch22 for stepping in for me yesterday. Secondly! Today's theme is On The Road - road trips, commuting to work, driving home for the holidays, going across country for a job - any way you want to spin it!
You guys know the rules: No more than 5 prompts, and only 3 prompts per fandom unless someone answers one of your prompts.
No spoilers in your prompt until a week after air-date - if there are spoilers in your story, you need to warn and leave three spaces.
And of course, remember the format! Fandom, Character/Character, prompt.
Supernatural, Dean/Castiel, three hundred miles to the next job
Chronicles of Narnia, Susan, she doesn't take the train anymore
Merlin, author's choice, road trip AU
If none of the prompts catch your interest, take a gander at the Lonely Prompts Listing on delicious and adopt a few!

There were all sorts of beings in the whole of the universe. And he was the curious type. From the time he was born he had been asking questions and if there wasn’t an answer readily available, he would go find one. It made his time at the Academy hell, being so clever and even more curious, especially when his brother could be dim and the rest of the class were all cousins, so every one of them knew all about his Special Destiny; and it got him into a lot of trouble all the time, but he couldn’t resist the feeling of learning something new and applying it to get himself out of trouble. It was his addiction.
And then they dragged him before the Untempered Schism. He was frightened that night, two of his cousins had gone mad when they looked and his best friend in all the universe – who had looked just the week before – was now somehow… quite off. There were more than a few impulses not to go, not to look, not to risk madness. But then, if he didn’t go, if he didn’t look, if he didn’t risk madness then he would never know. He had to know.
For the rest of his life he would remember the cool metallic hand of Badger as he calmly lead the way. He remembered stopping for one moment and looking into Badger’s eyes. “Will I still be your pupil after this?”
Badger’s head had tilted slightly, in that way he did when he was trying to formulate something new. “I do not have sufficient data for a proper supposition. Apologies.”
He’d leaned in then and given Badger a hug. Not that his tutor would ever really understand his need for it, but he knew it would be forgiven.
Then they had rounded another corner and there it had been. It was vast and terrifying and amazing and he couldn’t help the few extra steps he took towards it as information started flooding into his mind. At first it was beautiful, so beautiful. And then he saw it. Quick flashes of understanding that surfaced to his conscious mind; terrifying beasts and horrific wars, those he had expected, those were the nature of the universe. But this…. This…. This was so much worse.
He was one of forty five cousins within his House, and another two hundred and ten who could claim him from other Houses. He was a member of the Prydonian chapter. His parents doted on him. His brother bothered him unendingly with maddening questions. He slept in a bed with five others every night. His walks into the forest were always accompanied by the Hermit. Badger was never more than three steps away. He learned all that he could, and the lynchpin of this learning was Neutrality Above All. This was his life. He was constantly and unendingly surrounded by people and noise and life. And he loved it, every moment of its insanity was like fuel to him.
The vortex showed him something completely different. So different that even the cleverest of Time Lord children saw it as alien and wrong.
Neutrality was ended and the Time Lords went to war.
And he was left alone, the last of them. Forever alone.
He turned and he ran. He ran as fast as his young legs could carry him. He ran all the way to the dump outside the city. And that’s where he found her. She was his salvation. With her, he could outrun anything and everything. She was bruised and broken and sent to the scrap heap, but he knew how she worked. He could fix her. She would be his TARDIS.
He never went home again, even when he was on Gallifrey. He never stopped running, even when he was sentenced to live without his memories, even when his own kind called him a killer and a traitor.
And when what he’d seen in the vortex came to pass; when Gallifrey went to war and Time Lords lost their neutrality like a child losing innocence, he knew what would follow. It took less than a century.
There were facts; and as much as he tried and raged and ran, he couldn’t change facts. He was the Doctor. He was the last of the Time Lords. And he was alone.

Date: 2009-10-20 10:07 pm (UTC)I love how you play with time and space. Do I detect a crossover with the Once and Future King with the Badger? Or am I completely out on a limb. Either way, this is absolutely fantastic.
