The bell over the door dinged, catching Pamela's attention and she turned around to see the blonde who had been coming in for weeks. She smiled and stepped back from the plant she had been repotting. "Back again?"

The woman nodded, walking over to the carnations. "I have a friend who had a baby last night and I wanted to bring her something."

Pamela nodded and grabbed a vase, filling it with water before plucking a couple of different kinds of flowers to add to it. "You've been in here a lot lately," Pamela commented as she arranged the flowers in the vase. She glanced up at the other woman to see she looked a little nervous.

"The flowers here are nicer than other places."

Pamela smiled softly, placing the vase on the counter. "I take great pride in the flowers I sell." She pulled her gloves off as the woman reached for her wallet. "You know, in all the times you've been in here, I don't think I've caught your name."

The woman looked up from her wallet, looking surprised. "Dinah. My name is Dinah."

"Well Dinah, here's some flowers on the house," Pamela said, sliding the vase closer to Dinah. "On the condition that you let me take you out to lunch sometime."

Dinah stood there shocked for a moment before slipping a couple of dollars into the tip jar. "I would love to have lunch with you sometime. Can I give you my number?"

Pamela nodded and opened the notepad she used to write down orders, sliding it over to Dinah along with a pen. Dinah quickly jotted down her number and handed it back. "I need to get to the hospital before work, maybe I'll see you this afternoon?"

Pamela nodded and smiled. "I'll give you a call. Bye, Dinah."

"Bye, Pamela."

I played a little fast and loose with the idea of the poppy idea for this.

Steve hadn’t really noticed much the first few years he was out of the ice. At first he was just trying to get acclimated to the new time. Then it was the Chitauri, taking down SHIELD, Ultron, searching for Bucky, the whole clusterfuck with Tony, the list just went on and on.

There was no time to actually look around.

But this year… as the weather turned warmer… he finally had time to breathe.

Not only did he have time to breathe, but he had Bucky back by his side.

Maybe not the way they’d imagined, there weren’t two girls by their side, but it was better this way; just the two of them.

Bucky was still tended towards paranoia when they went out walking or shopping. It wasn’t that he was afraid, but he tended to scan the surrounding area; always alert for danger. Steve understood the urge, the need to watch for danger, but sometimes he also just wanted to go for a walk or a run.

Today he’d managed to coax Bucky out of the Tower and on a shopping expedition. He didn’t realize what weekend it was until they were exiting the store. Bucky had been smiling; teasing Steve as the Super Solider complained about how bananas had changed since they were kids. The sound of voices drew them away from their discussion.

Two men were seated at a table just to the side of the door, a folding table in front of them with a plastic jug and an array of silk flowers. Bucky’s eyes lit up at the sight and he nudged Steve. “Steve, look poppies.” He directed his friend’s gaze to the table.

One of the men held a poppy out to him. (https://padresteve.files.wordpress.com/2013/05/1144221_orig.jpg) “Is there someone you’d like to honor?” he asked.

The other man pushed the jar forward and a pad of paper with a pen. “You can do it anonymously.”

Bucky had been eying the World War Two veteran ballcaps the men were wearing. “Where were you stationed?” he asked, even as he took the pad and began to write out names, his writing big and spiky so unlike the elegant handwriting he’d had as a young man.

“Italy,” the man answered. “Had the privilege of seeing Captain America and his Commandos once. “ He indicated his partner. “He was in the Pacific.”

Bucky ducked his head, biting back a smile as he finished writing. “Thank you for your service,” he said as he stuffed the paper into the jar. Steve added a few dollars and accepted the poppies the first man held out.

Steve shifted the bag to his other hand so he could offer one of the poppies to Bucky and then his hand. Bucky accepted with the smile he’d been fighting back. “He had the privilege of seeing Captain America and his Commandos,” Bucky cracked.

Steve nudged him sideways. “At least he didn’t recognize us.”

The response surprised a chuckle out of Bucky and he looked down at the poppy in his hand. “I wrote down their names. I remember them. I remember all of them now.”

“I was too late to see any of them,” Steve admitted. “Except for Peggy. I got to say good-bye to her.”

“Think Stark will say anything if we raid his liquor?”

“Not this time.” It might not get them drunk, but it would be perfect to raise a toast to the comrades who had gone before.

Just the idea of writing down the names. I don't think I've ever seen that at any of the poppy locations. I feel like Bucky would need to remember. And he would be proud/want Steve to know that he does remember them.
