Thursday: Coming & Going
Mar. 8th, 2018 12:04 amHi! I’m
brumeier, and this week we’re going to be looking at both sides of the coin, so to speak. Today’s theme is COMING & GOING. Could be travel-related, or someone coming into or leaving a job. Any interpretation of either is good!
Just a few rules:
No more than five prompts in a row.
No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
Use the character's full names and fandom's full name for ease adding to the Lonely Prompts spreadsheet.
No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing, or use the spoiler cut option found here.
If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the spoiler cut.
If there are possible triggers in your story, please warn for them in the subject line!
Prompts should be formatted as follows: [Use the character's full names and fandom's full name]
Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt
Some examples to get the ball rolling...
+ Stargate Atlantis, John Sheppard/Rodney McKay, going all out to make the big romantic gesture
+ Lethal Weapon (TV), Martin Riggs, mentally he always has one foot out the door
+ Hawaii Five-0, Steve McGarrett/Danny Williams, it was just supposed to be a romantic day trip
+ Any, Any, Character A has Character B so turned around they don’t know if they’re coming or going
We use AO3 to bookmark filled prompts. If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3 please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2016 collection. See further notes on this new option here.
Not feeling any of today’s prompts? Check out Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet 1 (not very current), Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet 2, or the Calendar Archives, or for more recent prompts, you can use LJ's advanced search options to find prompts to request and/or fill.
While the Lonely Prompts Spreadsheets and LJ's advanced search options are available, bookmarking the links of prompts you like might work better for searching for in the future.

Date: 2018-03-08 05:04 am (UTC)Fill -- Ramblin' Man
Date: 2018-03-08 05:45 pm (UTC)He never thinks of the city as home, though. That’s a word he’s rarely applied to his living situation; twice it’s been cut short by death, and he’s getting to where he doesn’t believe in it anymore.
After growing up land-locked, he digs watching the Pacific sweep the sands outside his door, but there’s plenty more ocean where that came from.
If things ever go bad, irreversibly, unredeemably bad, he thinks, he’ll head up the coast, maybe check out the streets of San Francisco. Yeah, that would be cool. Because, Bullitt--Steve McQueen as a lone detective tearing up the hills in hot pursuit of bad guys. Or Clint Eastwood’s Dirty Harry, totally righteous, totally badass…. Too bad there’s probably nowhere to park the Tin Can, and from what he’s heard, the cost of living there is worse than a Texas oilfield during a big boom.
Sight-seeing is a possibility, but he couldn’t stick around ‘Frisco for long. Maybe keep going up the coast, hit Seattle or Portland, someplace like that, where guys can get away with wearing boots and plaid flannel shirts without getting looked at funny. (Sometimes, the style obsession in L.A. is all it takes to set him off. Buncha damn yuppies in dress shirts and wingtips…polo shirts and loafers on the weekends…crazy. Just freaking crazy.) Apparently the zoning regs up there call for a coffee shop every thirty-five feet, which would be handy.
If the Pacific Northwest is a no go…coin toss--Alaska (although the Tin Can probably doesn’t have enough insulation for an Arctic winter), or points east. Way the hell east, because most of those states in the middle are Texas wannabes without the longhorns. Chicago sounds okay. No ocean, but a great lake, ha ha. At least they have decent steakhouses and pretty good pizza.
Forget New York. Scum of the Earth, unless news reports are deliberately lying to keep the tourists out. There’s nothing there Riggs wants to see that bad.
Florida has possibilities. Plenty of sandy beaches to camp on, from Daytona to Key West and back again. They’ve got NASCAR, NASA, alligators, and cats with six toes--Riggs might even check out the so-called “Happiest place on Earth”. And what the hell, Miami Vice couldn’t all be made up, right?

Date: 2018-03-08 05:05 am (UTC)Hawaii Five-O Steve/Danny Romantic Trip?
Date: 2018-03-08 05:32 pm (UTC)"Danny, do you think we'll really need all this? We're just going up the coast for a romantic day trip. We're not preparing for a zombie apocalypse."
"Do I need to remind you of all the times things have gone wrong? Stranded in the middle of the ocean? Or how about when we were stranded in the jungle?"
Steve gave a groan. "It wasn't a jungle."
"Seemed like it!" Danny shot back at him.
"We're going to be in civilization, cars, buildings with people all around us!" He gave up at that point when Danny holstered his loaded gun and deposited in the glove box. "Just get in so we can get going," Steve said with a shake of his head. He loved Danny so he was willing to overlook his little eccentricities. Plus, things always seemed to go south for them. How could he argue when deep down he knew Danny was right?
An hour into the drive, he looked over to see Danny dozing in his seat. He smiled, happy that Danny had relaxed and he felt himself beginning to relax as well. Danny meant well, always wanting to be prepared. How could he fault him? But, he was determined to not let anything ruin their day together.
The truck coming to a stop had Danny's eyes snapping open. He reached out to get his gun from the glove box only to feel a hand on his. "We're only stopped for gas," Steve said with a chuckle. "No need to grab your gun."
The shouting from inside the little store attached to the gas station had them both on alert. Steve didn't stop Danny this time when he went for his gun. Danny slid out from the truck, closed his door quietly and inched closer to the store, gun ready. Steve was right behind him. The yelling got louder.
"You son of a bitch! I'm going to kill you!" A woman's voice scream.
Together they entered the store, unnoticed as the yelling between a man and a woman continued.
"You're about to be real sorry!" The woman screamed, holding a gun in her hand.
"No please, don't." The man yelled back.
Danny stepped out, coming up behind them. "Put your hands where I can see them!"
Danny and Steve watched as the couple threw their hands up.
"Take whatever you want, just don't hurt us!" The man pleaded.
"Turn around," Steve said to the woman. He watched as a shaking teenage girl turned around hands in the air but one still held the gun. "Drop your gun." Steve ordered and watched as she let it fall to the ground cracking and breaking as it hit, a red substance splattering on the ground.
"Danny, put your gun down. It's only a plastic toy gun." Steve turned to look at the couple. "Sorry, Five-0, we thought you were going to do harm to each other."
The girl shook her head. "N-no, water gun f-filled with red food coloring. Ch-cheated on me." She stammered between hiccuped tears.
"Oh, God!" Danny said. "You see, something like this always happens. I swear we're cursed!" He said as he stormed out of the store, leaving Steve to apologize to the teenagers.
He came out to find Danny sitting in the truck. "Let's just go home," he muttered to Steve.
"Yeah, kind of a mood killer." Steve said and winced at the look Danny threw him. "I love you. And, at least we aren't stranded in the ocean or the jungle."
He watched as Danny smiled and began to laugh. "Kind of makes me wish we were!"
With a chuckle, Steve started the truck and reversed their direction, driving them back toward home. Taking Danny's hand and squeezing it he said a silent prayer that they'd get back home without another incident.

Date: 2018-03-08 01:18 pm (UTC)Fill: Rodney McKay
Date: 2018-03-08 10:03 pm (UTC)And that was just the produce section.
He'd forgotten how much variety there was. He counted at least eight different kinds of apples, five different kinds of peppers. Green cabbage, red cabbage, bok choy, leeks, okra. Rodney wandered through the displays, at a loss, and finally settled on a bag of pre-made salad.
The rest of the store wasn't much better. Had there always been so many different kinds of Doritos? And cookies? And frozen dinners? He remembered partway through about checking labels and had to stop and go through everything in the cart. Back home he didn't...huh. Rodney stood there with a package of Oreo cookies in his hand, wondering at what point Atlantis had become home and Earth had become so unfamiliar.
Forced leave. That's what he was on. Rodney had avoided going back to Earth after they made contact again, for the simple reason that he had nothing he needed to do there. All his work, his team...everything he needed was in Atlantis. It wasn't like he had family to visit, and the SGC kept denying his requests to bring his cat to Pegasus.
Once he'd detoxed from the Wraith enzyme, and Carson was sure he wasn't in danger of harming himself or someone else or having a stress-related heart attack, Elizabeth had insisted he need to take some time. Get away from the danger for a couple of weeks.
She obviously didn't know how many varieties of cereal there were and how overwhelming it felt just to face that long aisle of brightly-colored boxes.
It took Rodney almost two hours to do the shopping and by the end of it he was so tense he was worried he might snap in half.
"Thank you for shopping at Value Mart!" the cashier said cheerily.
Rodney just stared at her.
He was renting an apartment in Colorado Springs. Unlike the vision the mist people had given him, Rodney hadn't just left all his things behind like he might be back in a couple of days. All of his stuff was in storage and he'd gotten out of his lease; he hadn't known if he'd ever be back, after all.
Rodney unpacked his groceries and ended up having to throw a couple of things away because he hadn't checked the labels thoroughly. He managed to get a frozen dinner in the oven without too much trouble but kept trying to turn the lights on with his mind.
While he waited for his dinner to heat up, Rodney dropped down on the couch and leaned his head back, closing his eyes. He was exhausted. He missed just popping into the Mess and picking from a small array of prepared foods that had been made with his citrus allergy in mind.
And the people! There were so many people! Crowds of them everywhere. There'd been a lot of new faces in Atlantis since they re-established contact with the SGC, but it was still nothing like Earth. Everyone was talking on cell phones. There was traffic noise and people noise and the humming of electronics and birds...an overwhelming cacophony.
Rodney missed the sounds of Atlantis: waves lapping against the piers, Zelenka muttering to himself in Czech, the bubbling water in the desalinization tubes, Miko singing songs in Japanese, Sheppard's lazy drawl.
He rubbed his hand absently against his chest, waiting for the timer to ding so he could eat. He was so hungry. Two hours later he was sitting on the edge of the bathtub and rocking back and forth, his stomach twisted from what he could only assume were the additives and preservatives in his frozen dinner.
Rodney wasn't going to last two weeks. Tomorrow he'd go to the SGC, to Landry himself, and demand to go back to Atlantis. They needed him there. Sheppard could be getting into all kinds of trouble without him, and as good as Zelenka was Rodney didn't want him running the labs; he didn't have the temperament for it.
Earth didn't feel like home anymore.

Date: 2018-03-08 07:35 pm (UTC)John rolled his eyes. "Just - go to sleep. I'll see you in the morning."
Dorian actually clung to his arm, leaned in, lowered his voice. "I mean it. If I have to stay with Rudy one more night -"
John tugged free. That he could even escape Dorian's grip meant he wasn't serious.
But then Dorian's gaze went blank like it did when he was doing some kind of internal process, and then he said, "I'd like to speak to Captain Maldonado, please."
John's eyes went wide. "All right. All right! Come - come with me to get ramen. And you can crash on my couch just once."
The light came back on in Dorian's eyes as he disconnected the call. "Just to see how it goes, right?" He followed John out the door to his car.
"Just this once," John said firmly.
Three weeks later, Dorian moved in.
Rudy was very, very sad.

Date: 2018-03-09 01:16 am (UTC)Chloe narrowed her eyes at him. "I thought I kicked you out. And." She held up a finger, not quite shaking it him. "I was drunk!"
"And naked, don't forget."
"Gah! Why do I even talk to you about these kinds of things?"
"Because we're partners, Detective, and partners seem to do a lot of talking." Lucifer sighed gustily. "There are many other things partners could be doing, you know." He waggled his eyebrows as if she wouldn't know what he was insinuating.
"No. No." Chloe swept that idea away with both hands. "None of that. We're partners. Platonic. Partners. And, as such, I need to be going. Home. To check on whatever scary thing your bartender is teaching my daughter tonight."
Lucifer rose to his feet to follow her to the lift. "You do know your offspring is in excellent hands with Maze." He back-pedaled a bit at the expression on Chloe's face. "Well, at least she's well-protected! No one could even approach your child with Maze on duty." A part of him wished Mazikeen was still watching his back but that was water under the bridge or something. One of these days he'd have to figure out a way to bring her back but for now, her affection for the Detective's spawn meant Chloe had a ready babysitter without having to rely on Dan the Douche.
"Yes, but we have a night time ritual," Chloe said, stepping into the lift. She turned around to face Lucifer, somehow ignoring his disappointed expression. "I read her a story, we talk about our days, and she goes to bed." Her own expression softened. "And I watch her go to sleep."
"Sounds ghastly," Lucifer said.
She nodded in that way that meant she had no understanding why he might say that. "Well, be that as it's may, I'm going home." The doors started together. "Good night, Lucifer."
"It could be!" he shouted but the doors closed and the lift descended. Another sigh, but softer. Less dramatic. "You could stay," Lucifer repeated, knowing how unlikely it might ever be.
