“Well, what do you know, Jack Benjamin, up with the chickens. Literally.”

Jack straightened up slightly but didn’t turn toward the achingly familiar voice.

“The whole point of putting me out with the chickens was so I’d have no human contact but so I’d get some fresh air and not go insane, trapped in my gilded cage with Lulu.” He continued strewing the dirt with chicken feed. They clucked and drifted around his feet, pecking at the ground. “Seeing as how I’m having human contact, Silas’s hand-picked security detail must be in a bad way.”

“They’re just sleeping.”

“Surprise surprise, David Shepherd doesn’t want to kill anyone.”

“They’ll be asleep long enough for you to come with me, if you want.”

“Come with you and do what?” Jack asked, still refusing to look and see if David was really there or if his mind had finally broken.

“Come with me and see about gathering enough support to do right by Gilboa.”

“And what’s right by Gilboa?”

“A different king,” David said.

Jack turned, and there David was, dusty in olive fatigues stripped of Gilboan military insignias. He was sunburned and his hair was unkempt and he was unshaven - and he was beautiful.

“And you think that king should be you?” Jack asked.

David’s eyes went wide. “No. Not at all -”

“Why should that king be me?”

“Because you’re not your father.”

Jack had never wanted to be his father. He’d just wanted his father to love him, respect him, not be disappointed in him. But he’d ended up being more like his father than he ever wanted to admit.

“What if I am?”

“You have the chance to change,” David said.

Jack stared at him and wondered how, with all he’d done, his optimism and idealism hadn’t faded.

David offered a hand. “Come with me, Jack. It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day - and it can be a new Gilboa.”

Jack let the rest of the chicken feed fall, wiped his hand on his thigh, and reached out. “Let’s go.”

Wow, I love David patiently seeking out Jack, even in such an unlikely place. I love the image of David, not as the pretty, fresh-faced young man of the series, but older and more tested by life--but still a good man who's doing the right thing. Thanks so much for me fill!

A gun-runner and a sex trafficker walk into a bar…they’re her targets, Natasha Romanoff reminds herself. The sex trafficker, also a jazz aficionado, owns the strip club--Trumpets and Strumpets. Supposedly, the gun-runner is going to be dealing Glocks to a friend of the owner.

Still, it should be easy enough to accidentally take someone out when the bust goes down. Such as Bruce, the emcee at the club, who is a total pig and a waste of breath. Nick Fury owes her big-time for letting him talk her into going undercover here. It isn’t like she’s the only female operative SHIELD has. And what had she been thinking, adopting the stage name of Dawn de la Rue?

She’d been thinking of the movie Red Dawn, both versions of which she enjoys, that’s what. She’d been thinking that the assignment sounded simple enough, and it would be a good workout. She hadn’t reckoned with Bruce, who leers at the dancers and repeats his patter verbatim every time he introduces them, which means multiple times every night, she hat to grit her teeth and resist the urge to throat-kick his Adam’s apple with a spiked heel on her way to the stage..

It isn’t that she’s offended by the tastelessness of it--it’s the lack of imagination and monotony that disturb her. It’s tedious listening to him gloat about “seeing the crack of Dawn’….
