Wednesday: 100 Words on AUs
Aug. 22nd, 2018 12:04 amHi! I’m
brumeier, and this week we’re going to be filling themes using 100 words or any multiple of 100. Today’s theme is AUs, anything and everything about alternate universes (alternate meetings, alternate jobs, canon divergence, etc.)!
Just a few rules:
No more than five prompts in a row.
No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
Use the character's full names and fandom's full name for ease adding to the Lonely Prompts spreadsheet.
No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing, or use the spoiler cut option found here.
If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the spoiler cut.
If there are possible triggers in your story, please warn for them in the subject line!
Prompts should be formatted as follows: [Use the character's full names and fandom's full name]
Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt
Some examples to get the ball rolling...
+ Stargate Atlantis, Ensemble, The Goonies AU
+ Marvel Cinematic Universe, any, traveling carnival AU
+ Hawaii Five-0, Steve McGarrett/Danny Williams, Steve works for Search & Rescue and Danny needs rescuing
+ Any, Any, auditioning for a movie/reality tv series/theater production
We use AO3 to bookmark filled prompts. If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3 please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2016 collection. See further notes on this new option here.
Not feeling any of today’s prompts? Check out Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet 1 (not very current), Lonely Prompts Spreadsheet 2, or the Calendar Archives, or for more recent prompts, you can use LJ's advanced search options to find prompts to request and/or fill.
While the Lonely Prompts Spreadsheets and LJ's advanced search options are available, bookmarking the links of prompts you like might work better for searching for in the future.

Date: 2018-08-22 04:06 am (UTC)Fillx7: Harry Potter, Hermione, Ron, Harry
Date: 2018-08-26 02:43 pm (UTC)She’s watched every movie that Albus Dumbledore has ever directed, apart from ‘Grindelwald’ and ‘Sister Mine’, which have an 18 certificate. Her father put his foot down on that. He also refused to watch them for her to give her an overview of the themes and how Dumbledore directed women. But Hermione has watched films like ‘The Missing Sock’ and ‘The Sherbet Lemon Army’ repeatedly.
She's even looked up casting director Minerva McGonagall's resume. The Scotswoman has an eye for high-flyers, giving Nymphadora Tonks, Fleur Delacoeur and even Amelia Bones their big breaks. Hermione hopes that she’ll see potential in her. Suddenly, one appearance as a girl with a collapsed lung and an overwhelmed single dad on ‘Casualty’ doesn’t seem like much.
Despite all her meticulous preparation, on the day, Hermione is nervous. All the other girls waiting seem to have less unruly hair than her. She tells herself that there’s nothing she can do about them and their hair. Wishing her surname started with ‘F’ or ‘E’, she stares at the linoleum, a sandy colour that graced no beach, and tells herself sternly that nerves are good. She can channel them.
She thinks about how she felt when she first read the book, how Bathilda Bagshot seemed to have written it just for Hermione. She gets Jean. All she has to do is show the film-makers that.
She jumps when they call her name.
Later, Dumbledore makes the observation to McGonagall that the way Hermione marched into the room made him think, “I wouldn’t want to get on the wrong end of that one’s wand.” In a way, Hermione won the part without opening her mouth.
But it’s a help that she knows all her lines, delivers them with intelligence and sincerity, and the camera loves her.
After Hermione finds out she’s been given the part of Jean, she squeals and jumps up and down for ages. She celebrates with fancy ice-cream. Her dentist parents let her, for once.
It's something of a shock when her co-stars, Ron Weasley and Harry Potter, playing Bill and Jamie, Jean’s best friends, admit they turned up to their auditions knowing hardly anything about the film. Neither of them have read the book it’s based on and Hermione will spend the whole of the shoot failing to persuade them to. Ron had learned his lines on the Tube and while waiting to be seen. He'd come with his mum and his younger sister who was more interested in acting than him. Ron had thought it would be a laugh and is carrying that attitude over into the production.
Hermione keeps telling him to take it more seriously. It’s water off a duck’s back.
Hermione, Ron and Harry have to hang out together, having lessons with their tutor, Quirrell. They bond over avoiding the first assistant director when they can. Hermione’s parents take it in turn to chaperone her, while Mrs Weasley chaperones Ron, but it’s Hagrid Rubeus, whose job is to train animals to appear in films, who comes with Harry.
Harry is no help with Ron’s attitude. He finds Ron hilarious. The adults don’t, especially first AD Snape, who clearly wishes they weren’t there, even though it’s a children’s movie.
Despite who Harry’s parents were, or rather had been, he isn't sure if he wants to carry on being an actor. He initially seems to be most interested in the food that craft services dish up than making the most of the opportunity to learn about film-making.
Hermione is sure 'The Greatest Witch of Her Age' will be a success, given Dumbledore's pedigree and the popularity of the book. She’s going to try to ensure it won’t fail because of her take on Jean, anyway.
As the shoot goes on, the boys became increasingly professional, especially when the cameras are rolling. Dumbledore says, “Magic,” after more takes.

Date: 2018-08-22 04:30 pm (UTC)Bajie, captain of the Azra, is charming, slippery. First Mate Minerva is beautiful, dangerous. Tilda is their muscle. Odessa, a Companion, lends them respectability so they can travel more freely.
Lydia, the Shepherd, is dangerous beneath her white shift and hand-carved wooden totems.
Veil becomes their doctor.
When Tilda accidentally breaks open Sunny’s stasis crate, everything goes to hell.
He’s covered in Clipper tattoos. He wakes black-eyed and screaming.
But Veil says his name, and no one dies.

Date: 2018-08-22 09:04 am (UTC)(Can you just see Picard trying to figure out why the newcomer always gets murdered in the quiet rural British town?)
Double Drabble
Date: 2018-08-22 06:15 pm (UTC)“Moved here about six months ago,” DS Riker replied. “Down from London, looking for a quieter life.”
“From what the locals have told me,” DC Worf added, “He was trying very hard to fit in.”
“Trying being the operative word?” Picard asked.
Worf nodded. “And he seemed to have already known a couple of people when he arrived.”
“Dr Crusher, what can you tell me?”
“Not much more than you already know. I’ll be able to add to it once I’ve done the post-mortem,” the doctor replied. “Death by strangulation about five this morning. The body was moved after death.”
“Sir!” the SOCO, la Forge called out. “I found this under an old sideboard. Is it possible it’s the murder weapon?” He held up a length of flex.
“Could it have been kicked under there at some time in the past?” Riker asked.
“No. There are clear sides of dust being disturbed recently.”
“Right, we’ll begin by talking to the people Smith knew before he moved down here,” Picard said. “They may be able to give us some background on him.”
“Shall I begin the house-to-house?”
“Make it so!”

Date: 2018-08-22 09:06 am (UTC)Fill -- MCU, Always Remember to Preheat Your Oven 600 words
Date: 2018-08-23 03:04 am (UTC)So many have tried. So few remain.
The first to be eliminated was Clint, a full-time farmer and part-time baking enthusiast. Unfortunately for him, his anise-seed scones had the density of hockey pucks.
The following week, Jarvis’s unability to recreate Tony’s signature red-and-gold-velvet cake had him packing up his utencils.
The third week, the lowest scores were posted by the Maximoff twins, but in the end, Pietro had gone home while his sister Wanda stayed.
Thor Odinson hadn’t been able to present a satisfactory Baked Alaska--his brother Loki, however, got top honors for that challenge.
Bruce had a spectacular meltdown the following week, insisting someone (evil eyeing Loki) had sabotaged his creme patisserie. (When footage proved him correct, Loki quietly departed.)
Steve was next to go when his croquembouche came apart as Pepper tasted one of the puffs.
Only three talented bakers remain: Sam, whose date-nut fruitcake has made even Tony appreciate fruitcake, Wanda, whose zabaglione Pepper has dubbed “magical”, and Bucky, who has placed first three times: for La Maitia (a tublime lemon cake), macarons with plum filling, and a hearty Irish soda bread that he modestly insists is an old family recipe. Interestingly, Sam and Bucky are both combat veterans, while Wanda and Pietro are Sokovian war refugees.
“Tell me about your cheesecake,” Natasha says to Sam.
“It’s got an orange filling, with a layer of marmalade over a ginger-snap crust,” he explains. “I love orange juice, so I made sure there’s plenty of orange zest in there.
Wanda is muttering to herself in Sokovian.
“She’s using fruit in her cheesecake,” Maria confides to the camera. “That’s always tricky--too much liquid can prevent it from setting properly.” She moves to the final table. “Bucky, how’s your cheesecake coming along?”
He pulls a clean spoon from his supplies and runs it around the edge of the bowl he mixed the filling in. “You don’t have a nut allergy, do you?”
“I couldn’t work here if I did,” she responds, and tastes the offered sample. “Oh my--butter pecan?”
“That’s right, and the crust is shortbread with hazelnuts.”
“Delicious!”
Clearly it’s going to be between Sam and Bucky. As Maria had predicted, Wanda’s cheesecake is more like a strawberry pudding with graham cracker crumbs mixed in.
Pepper adores butter pecan. Tony’s not a fan, but one bite of Sam’s Orange Delight makes him pucker up--and not in a good way. “How many oranges did they shave for that?” he says after washing the bitterness away with a a swig of milk. “I think someone got a bit carried away.”
So in the end, it’s Bucky who gets the trophy and prizes. “I’d like to dedicate this to all my fellow veterans,” he says from the podium. “We’ve seen some terrible things, but there’s still a lot of life ahead of us to celebrrate. If I could do this, you can make your dreams come true. Good luck to you all!”

Date: 2018-08-23 02:09 am (UTC)Bucky couldn’t afford to pay a dame to answer his phone or type up his reports, so he was laboriously pecking away at the typewriter when the hallway door – emblazoned with J.B. Barnes, PI on the glass – opened up and a figure clad in a wet overcoat stepped inside the office. They were holding a folded, dripping umbrella patterned with a black swirl, and it wasn’t until they looked up that Bucky could see it was a man.
And what a man he was, his face thin and delicate, like some kind of museum sculpture. His skin was so pale it seemed to glow. But it was the crackling blue eyes that caught Bucky’s attention. This was no empty-headed client.
“Mr. Barnes, I presume?” The man had a surprisingly deep voice for someone with such a slight build.
Bucky forced himself to focus back on the typewriter. “You presume correctly. How do you spell legitimately?”
The man spelled it as he was taking off his overcoat and hanging it on the coatrack by the door.
“Thanks. Have a seat.”
“My name is Steve Rogers. I’d like to hire you.”
“One second.” Bucky finished the report and pulled the paper from the carriage. It was a little spotty in some areas – he needed a new ribbon – but it would do. He tucked it into the file on his desk and pulled out the whisky. “Interest you in a shot?”
“Yes. Thank you.”
Rogers didn’t look like the kind of guy who regularly drank whisky, but Bucky poured him the shot anyway. The guy downed it like it was water.
“So what’s your sob story?” Bucky asked, sitting back in his chair.
“I think someone’s trying to kill me.”
“Why?”
“Why would someone try to kill me, or why do I think they are?”
Those eyes were shrewd and intelligent, almost hypnotic. But Bucky knew better than to get taken in by a pretty face. That was a road that led nowhere.
“Either.” He poured Rogers another shot of whisky.
“The answer to the first why is…I don’t know.”
Bucky was certain that was a lie.
“The answer to the second why is…I’ve had three near-misses in the last two days. That seems coincidental, don’t you think?” Rogers shifted in his chair and pulled something out of his pocket. “And there’s this.”
He pushed a folded piece of paper across the desk.
Bucky picked it up, unfolded it. It was a pencil sketch, as detailed as any Rockwell painting. He was looking at his own face.
“You didn’t ask about the who,” Roger said. “I think it’s you.”
